Pacifica Coconut Essence Hydro Mist–Hydrating Facial Spray for a Quick Refresh Anytime

I’ve reviewed several types of skincare products here on IntegriBeauty. I view most of them as staples in my routine, like face washes, moisturizers, and sunscreens. One skincare product that I enjoy using, but see as more of a special treat for my skin, is facial mist. It’s not a necessary part of my skincare routine, and I don’t even use one every single day, but this is a product that is satisfying to use and has a lot of potential for a variety of uses.

I believe I’m now on my third bottle of Pacifica Coconut Essence Hydro Mist which is a hydrating facial mist. This is a product that’s been around for quite a long time and is loved by many. It can be used for a quick refresh anytime, but it could also be used as toner, to help with blending foundation, to revive makeup you’ve been wearing all day, etc. It is truly a versatile product that I’ve enjoyed having in my skincare collection for the past couple of years.

Packaging/ease of application

Pacifica Coconut Essence Hydro Mist is packaged in a pretty standard plastic spray bottle (though it is really cute!). It’s clear, which is nice because you can see how much product is left in the bottle. The one downside of the clear packaging is that some active skincare ingredients are affected by light and light easily penetrates this bottle. However, I’m not sure if any of the ingredients in this product are susceptible to damage from light.

My one other complaint about this product’s packaging is in regards to the sprayer/”mister.” I wouldn’t call it aggressive like some are, but it doesn’t disperse the product as well as I’d like. I like a very gentle mist that disperses easily over my whole face, and I think this one could be improved.

I usually apply 3-6 spritzes of this mist, depending on how I’m using it. If I’m applying it over makeup, I usually will only use three spritzes to avoid breaking down my makeup. If I’m using it on clean skin, I use about six spritzes that I can then work into my skin. This product is very lightweight and feels like water. It soaks into the skin quickly and dries quickly if applying on top of makeup.

Pacifica also suggests spraying this mist on a foundation brush or makeup sponge to add moisture to any foundation. I don’t believe I’ve ever used this product in that way, but it’s a good idea!

Hydration

Even though this facial mist is water-light, it definitely provides a big shot of extra hydration. My skin always feels soft, refreshed, and well-hydrated after I’ve spritzed it on. If I get distracted after washing my face and want to keep my skin from drying out before I apply my other skincare products, I’ll often spritz this on to keep it damp longer. That’s important because molecules penetrate the skin better when it’s slightly damp (skincare products will be more effective when applied to damp skin vs. skin that’s completely dry).

If you have combination or oily skin and you’re concerned that this type of product might make you look greasy, do not fear! This product is oil-free and never leaves the skin looking greasy or tacky.

Ingredients

And now, for my favorite skincare review category: ingredients! I’ve already described this product as something that is pleasant to use and hydrating, but the ingredients will tell us if it’s really doing anything else for the skin.

Aqua, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, panthenol (vitamin B), allantoin, potassium sorbate, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel), cocos nucifera (coconut) water, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, caffeine, selaginella lepidophylla extract, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, parfum (natural)

There are a couple of controversial ingredients included in this list, as well as several “neutral” ingredients that support the formula, but there are also eight wonderful skin-loving ingredients! That’s really good considering there are only sixteen total ingredients. I’ll describe each of the eight ingredients that I can confidently say are good for the skin:

  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Sodium hyaluronate
    • Sodium form of hyaluronic acid (humectant)
  • Aloe barbadensis leaf extract
    • Moisturizer
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Panthenol
    • Moisturizer
    • Humectant
  • Allantoin
    • Soothes skin
  • Green tea leaf extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Coconut water
    • Moisturizes and nourishes skin
  • Sodium ascorbyl phosphate
    • Sodium form of vitamin C
    • Very stable

It’s great to see so many moisturizing ingredients in this facial mist, as well as the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients. These ingredients are sure to keep skin happy all day long!

I mentioned that there are a couple of controversial ingredients included in this product. The first is witch hazel. Witch hazel (which contains antioxidants and is soothing to the skin) may be sensitizing to the skin due to one of the antioxidant components called “tannin” as well as a chemical compound called “eugenol.” I have never experienced any problems with witch hazel, but some people are not able to use it.

The other controversial ingredient, caffeine, is not proven to be effective (though it may have soothing, antioxidant, and redness-reducing constricting properties) and may be sensitizing. Caffeine can be found in a lot of skincare products these days, but I am skeptical about its effectiveness. Fortunately, I have never reacted badly to any topical products containing caffeine. Just like with witch hazel, some people may not be able to use products containing caffeine.

The only other ingredient of note, in my opinion, is the natural fragrance (parfum). I think every Pacifica product I’ve reviewed has contained undisclosed natural fragrance. I know they have proprietary fragrance blends, but it would be nice if they would disclose the specific ingredients since a lot of people are very sensitive to fragrance, even natural fragrances.

Overall, I’m really happy with the ingredients in this product. There are a lot of really good ones, including seven in the top ten! That’s great, because the ingredients closer to the top have the highest concentrations.

Fragrance

If you’ve read a lot of my Pacifica product reviews, you probably already know how I feel about the fragrance of this product. That’s because this one, like many of the Pacifica products I’ve reviewed, smells like coconuts! I love coconut scented products because they smell sweet and tropical. I can pretend for a few seconds that I’m in a tropical paradise when I spray this on my face. 🙂 This facial mist smells very similar or maybe even identical to Pacifica Coconut Water Micellar Cleansing Tonic if you’re familiar with that product.

Price

Some facial sprays are ridiculously overpriced, and some of them are just glorified water. This one is a quality product that does a lot for the skin. I think it’s very fairly priced at $10.00 for four ounces. That’s only $2.50/ounce! This is a type of product that some people may run through quickly depending on how often they use it, but a bottle of it lasts me a long time since I don’t use it every single day. Even if you use up a bottle every couple of months, you don’t have to feel bad about repurchasing it at such a low price.

Before I tried this product, I thought facial sprays were kind of silly and a waste of money. Now that I’ve been using Pacifica Coconut Essence Hydro Mist for at least a couple of years, I know facial spray is a very refreshing and enjoyable product that’s worthy of a spot in everyone’s skincare collection. I may not always have this particular one, but I think I’ll always have some type of facial spray on hand.

This type of product has become very popular since it is so versatile and energizing. I think most people would enjoy Pacifica Coconut Essence Hydro Mist, especially anyone that enjoys the coconut scent!

e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer–Extra Coverage with a Satin Finish

Like many people, I have some under-eye darkness that I want to camouflage or cover up on days that I wear makeup. My favorite way of doing that is with a peachy color-corrector like Pixi by Petra Correction Concentrate. Unfortunately, there are some days where a color-corrector doesn’t cut it and I need a little extra brightening after my foundation is applied over the color-corrector. There are also some days that I forget to color-correct before applying foundation and then I find myself needing some extra coverage under my eyes. For both the days that I need extra brightening, and the days I forget my color-corrector, it’s nice to have a good concealer on hand to be sure I’ll always have sufficient coverage.

I struggled with finding a concealer that worked for me for a long time. Most of them I tried were too matte and looked cakey under my eyes, or dried so quickly that I didn’t have time to blend them out properly. What I wanted was a concealer that would provide me with some extra coverage, give me time to blend, and dry to a satin finish that wouldn’t look too dry on my under-eyes. When the e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer launched early this year, I thought it might fit my needs. I’ve enjoyed most of the e.l.f. products I’ve tried through the years and was excited to try this one too!

Please note that I have used this concealer very little on blemishes and primarily use it to brighten my under-eyes. I will be reviewing its effectiveness when used in that manner. However, most of my review will be more general information, so I hope you will continue reading regardless of how you may intend to use this product. 🙂

Please note that I am not a makeup artist. The opinions expressed in this review are my own, as a regular person that loves makeup.

Inclusivity

Most concealers don’t have very large shade ranges compared to foundations since they are not generally used all over the face and therefore don’t need to match skin’s natural color as closely as a foundation should. Most concealers come in fewer than 20 shades, but not this one! E.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer comes in 25 shades. There are fair, light, medium, tan, deep, and rich shades with cool, neutral, and warm undertones. Additionally, the shades are fairly distributed instead of most of the shades being on the lighter end of the spectrum (that is still a common problem, sadly).

I’m really impressed with this shade range! There seems to be an option for everyone.

Packaging/ease of application

E.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is packaged similarly to most popular concealers, in a clear plastic tube with a large doe foot applicator. I like that type of applicator because it’s easy to dot on a tiny amount of product, or swipe across a larger area. The other important thing to note about the packaging is that the cap/handle is white. The original 16HR Camo Concealer has a black cap/handle.

I’m baffled by the amount of concealer some people use under their eyes. I’ve found that the only way I can make this or any concealer look good under my eyes is to use the smallest amount possible and concentrate most of it in the inner corner which is where I have the most darkness to cover. If you have fine lines or wrinkles under your eyes, then I strongly suggest that you also only use a very small amount of this concealer as I’ve found that a little goes a long way. If you use too much, it will quickly settle into every line.

The other trick to making this concealer look good with fine lines and wrinkles, is to make sure you pat over it to remove any creases before setting lightly with powder…and powder is a must (at least for me it is).

Please understand that I am not saying this is a bad concealer because it settles into my fine lines. I’m pretty sure I’ve experienced that with every single concealer I’ve used in my adult life. This concealer is actually easier to use compared to a lot of others because it doesn’t dry down immediately. With this one, you have plenty of time to blend.

As far as tools, it can be blended out with fingertips, a sponge, or a brush. My preferred blending tool is a brush, but I think the other options work well enough, so it really comes down to personal preference.

Hydration

It’s important to me that any concealer I use should provide at least a little bit of hydration. My under-eyes aren’t particularly dry, but I feel like many products make them look dry after just a couple of hours. That’s not a good look. Dry cakey under-eyes can make a person look much older than they actually are, and some extra hydration can go a long way in maintaining the appearance of smooth youthful under-eyes.

Thankfully, e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is as promised, a hydrating concealer that dries to a satin finish. It feels very hydrating upon application, and I think that is part of the reason that it takes longer to dry down compared to a lot of other concealers. The hydrating property also makes it very smooth and easy to blend. The satin finish looks very nice and natural. I hope this photo represents that well. I blended out the top swatch with a fingertip and the bottom swatch is just from a couple swipes of the applicator (the top swatch was completely dry and the bottom one was mostly dry).

Staying power

Since this formula is lightweight and creamy, I think it might be prone to moving around if it’s not set with powder. Since I always set my concealer, I don’t experience that problem with this product. Once it’s set in place, it doesn’t move. That doesn’t include creasing, unfortunately.

If I don’t follow my own tips that I mentioned above (using only a small amount of product and tapping over any creases before setting with a small amount of powder), this concealer settles into the fine lines around my eyes and ages me by at least ten years. On the other hand, if I am careful to follow my own application tips, creasing is minimal. It looks very smooth for the first several hours and honestly doesn’t look bad even at the end of a long day. In this photo, I had been wearing this concealer for about seven hours and it still looked great!

Price

As expected, since Hydrating Camo Concealer is from e.l.f., it is very affordable! It is only $6.00 and that is very low, even if you only compare it to other drugstore concealers. There are some concealers that are a little less expensive than this one, but I doubt that they’re as good! This product checks all my boxes for a good concealer and it is most definitely worth buying.

e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer vs. e.l.f. 16HR Camo Concealer

Before Hydrating Camo Concealer, e.l.f. launched the 16HR Camo Concealer. It has a different formula; it dries down to a matte finish, dries quickly, and is recommended for normal to oily skin types. Since it is matte and quick-drying, the original Camo Concealer may be a better choice for concealing blemishes than the hydrating version.

If you’re already familiar with the 16HR Camo Concealer formula and are thinking about trying the newer Hydrating Camo Concealer, please keep in mind that the shade names are not equivalent between the two formulas (i.e. Fair Beige in 16HR Camo Concealer is a different shade from Fair Beige in Hydrating Camo Concealer). Make sure you look at shade descriptions and swatches before selecting a shade.

Does e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer live up to e.l.f.’s claims that this product is lightweight, full coverage, hydrating, and long-wearing? I’d say yes to all of those claims except for one. I don’t think this is a full coverage concealer. The coverage is good, but I’d say it’s more of a medium coverage product. The coverage is buildable, however, if you use too much you run the risk of looking cakey or having the product settle into fine lines and wrinkles. For more coverage, I’d recommend pairing this concealer with a color-corrector.

For a long time, I honestly thought I’d never find a concealer that would work for me. I’m so happy to report that I’m enjoying e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer! I think it would be a great choice for anyone looking for a hydrating under-eye concealer. 🙂

I tried one of e.l.f.’s older concealer formulas years ago and didn’t care for it. E.l.f. has really stepped up the quality of its products and I’m so impressed with this newer concealer! Have you tried the original 16HR Camo Concealer, or the Hydrating Camo Concealer, or both? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

Derma E Universal Cleansing Balm–Dissolve Stubborn Makeup Instantly

I can be pretty stubborn sometimes. One thing I was stubborn about for a long time, was not wanting to double cleanse on days I wore makeup. I didn’t see the point when my face wash removed my makeup. But you know what else can be pretty stubborn? Makeup. I don’t know if I was in denial, or just didn’t notice for a long time, but eventually I realized that I was missing some makeup with my face wash. I was having an especially hard time removing all the makeup around my eyes and from either side of my nose.

One of the most popular types of product used in a double cleanse routine is cleansing balm. They claim to dissolve stubborn makeup instantly, which sounded pretty amazing. I was skeptical of cleansing balms for a long time and thought they sounded too good to be true. Since I enjoy trying new skincare products, I thought I’d give one a shot and see what all the fuss was about. A lot of cleansing balms have very mixed reviews. The Derma E Universal Cleansing Balm received great reviews and is also affordable, so I decided that was the one. I’ve been using it for just over a month now and I really wish I hadn’t waited so long! Continue reading for my full review. 😉

Product claims directly from DermaE.com

This luxurious cleansing balm melts on contact and transforms into lightweight cleansing milk that instantly dissolves all makeup, dirt and excess oil buildup without overly drying the skin, leaving the skin supple, smooth and ultra-hydrated. Enriched with soothing extracts and nourishing vitamins for a deep, yet gentle cleanse.

Packaging/ease of application

This cleansing balm is packaged in a plastic jar. A small spatula is provided to hygienically scoop the product out of the jar. Some cleansing balms that include a spatula have it magnetized to stay affixed to the lid, or some other type of design feature to hold it in place. This one doesn’t have anything like that, so unfortunately it would be very easy to lose the spatula. I’ve managed not to lose mine yet, as I always set it on top of the jar when I’m finished using it. I appreciate that the spatula was provided, but I really wish Derma E had provided a storage solution to keep it with the jar.

The cleansing balm itself is extremely easy to apply! It looks like a soft wax coming out of the jar, but as soon as it reacts with the warmth of my skin, it melts down to an oil, or cleansing milk as Derma E calls it. That cleansing milk spreads easily over the skin and a little goes a long way.

One thing I really like about this cleansing balm (and this may be true for all cleansing balms) is that it applies very well to dry skin. Derma E recommends adding water to activate, but I don’t find that to be necessary. It’s very effective without water until it’s time to wash everything away.

Cleansing

Once this cleansing balm has melted on my skin, it instantly starts to dissolve my makeup. The first time I used it, I thought “wow this is magic!” It breaks down all makeup very easily, whether it’s very light tinted moisturizer, full coverage foundation, or even a full eye look with mascara. Once I’ve massaged it into my whole face, all makeup has been dissolved and it’s ready to be washed or wiped away. I am very happy with how quickly, easily, and thoroughly this cleansing balm breaks down every trace of makeup on my face.

Ingredients

When I decided to seek out a cleansing balm, I wasn’t expecting to find one with many skincare benefits. I thought they were just designed to remove makeup and that was it. I don’t know about others out there, but Derma E Universal Cleansing Balm contains several skin-loving ingredients!

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Vegetable Derived), Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Lauryl Laurate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Polyglyceryl-3 Laurate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Glyceryl Stearate Citrate (Vegetable Derived), Cetyl Alcohol (Vegetable Derived), Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Camellia Olefera Seed Oil, Retinol (Vitamin A), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Polysorbate 20, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Orange Sweet Oil, Natural Fragrance Oils

I’m not entirely happy with the ingredient list for this product, but there are a lot of ingredients I was pleased to see on it. I’ll get to the not-so-good ingredients after going over the good ones!

  • Safflower Seed Oil
    • Contains nourishing fatty acids and antioxidant vitamin E
  • Sunflower Seed Oil
    • Improves damaged or irritated skin barrier
    • Loaded with fatty acids
  • Cocoa Seed Butter
    • Rich emollient that’s highly moisturizing and nourishing
    • Contains fatty acids, vitamin E, and polyphenols
  • Shea Butter
    • Emollient moisturizer
    • Skin-soothing
    • Antioxidant-rich
  • Rosehip Oil
    • High fatty acid content
    • Has antioxidant and skin-regenerative properties
  • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate
    • Stable form of vitamin C
  • Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil
    • Emollient and moisturizing
    • Rich in fatty acid, oleic acid
    • Contains vitamin E
  • Retinol (Vitamin A)
    • Most proven anti-aging ingredient available OTC
    • Smooths skin and reduces wrinkles
  • Tocopheryl Acetate (most common version of vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Skin-strengthening
    • Not as well absorbed as pure vitamin E

Impressive, right? I was especially shocked to see retinol included on the list, as it’s usually only used in leave-on products. I’m happy to see it since it is an effective anti-aging ingredient!

The only ingredients I was disappointed to see are the last three ingredients on the list: Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Orange Sweet Oil, and Natural Fragrance Oils. These fragrance oils are all possible skin irritants. Plus, we have no way of knowing which oil(s) are included in “natural fragrance oils.” Fortunately, that is the very last ingredient on the list. I wish Derma E had made this cleansing balm fragrance free by leaving out the last three ingredients, but I am glad that they did put them at the bottom of the list so they have small concentrations in the formula. They would be much more likely to irritate sensitive skin if they were further up the list.

All other ingredients in the formula are “neutral” things like emollients and emulsifiers. Nothing to worry about from those. 🙂

While I’m not thrilled to see the fragrance ingredients included in this product, overall it’s a very impressive list of ingredients. That makes me even happier that I chose this as my first ever cleansing balm!

Ease of removal

This product is a bit heavy and very greasy due to the oils. Because of that, it isn’t the easiest product to rinse off. It can be removed with water alone, but I find that I have to work at it for a couple of minutes to get it all off. The easiest way to remove this cleansing balm is by wiping it off with a damp washcloth. Once I’ve done that, my skin feels clean. To be sure everything is truly removed from my face, I follow up with my Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser and then I can move on with the rest of my skincare routine.

Price

Derma E offers many affordable skincare products and some that I think are a little overpriced for a drugstore brand. Fortunately, this cleansing balm is one that I feel falls into the affordable/fairly priced category at $15.00 for 3.5 ounces. Until I started searching for a cleansing balm, I had no idea how expensive some of them are. Many of the high-end cleansing balms are $30+, and frankly I think that’s crazy since it’s a product that doesn’t stay on the skin for very long. There aren’t very many drugstore brands that offer cleansing balms. I found one from Milani that is $13.99, but it’s only a 1.59 ounce jar! I am happy to pay $15.00 to Derma E for more than twice the amount of product!

Like I said in the intro, I wish I’d tried this cleansing balm much earlier than I did. It’s very pleasant to use, smells amazing, I appreciate the great skincare ingredients, and I’m always happy to see how effectively it dissolves even the most stubborn makeup.

I think Derma E Universal Cleansing Balm would work very well for any makeup-wearer, possibly with the exception of those that have sensitive skin. There’s always some risk with fragrant oils, but thankfully the risk with this product should be fairly low since those oils have the lowest concentrations of all the ingredients.

Colourpop Just a Tint Lip Crayons–Lightweight High Moisture Color for Juicy Lips

Lip balms are a great choice year-around to keep lips soft and moisturized. But what if you want a little color, too? Or a finishing touch on a quick “no fuss” makeup look? Lipsticks aren’t as hydrating as lip balm and they can look too heavy if you’re going for a more casual look. A good compromise is a tinted lip balm, which provides the hydration of a lip balm, with a sheer wash of color to dress up your look a bit.

Not all tinted lip balms provide much, if any, actual color payoff. If you’re looking for one that provides visible color while also providing lots of moisture for juicy lips, look no further than Colourpop Just a Tint lip crayons. These lip crayons look different from a standard lip balm, but they provide just as much moisture. They also offer buildable coverage. You can apply one coat for a sheer wash of color, or add a couple more coats for opaque color.

Colourpop’s Just a Tint lip crayons have been such a big hit, they also released them in several kits which each include two complementary shades. Additionally, I’ve seen at least a couple of influencers collaborate with Colourpop to curate temporary collections of their favorite shades. This is one of Colourpop’s most popular lip products, so I’m excited to be reviewing it!

Product claims directly from Colourpop.com

For the days when you need a 5 minute face. Get the perfect sheer wash of colour in the comfiest, lightweight, super moisturizing formula. Loaded with Passion Fruit Oil, Coconut Oil, Marula Oil, and Shea Butter to provide hydration for healthy, glowy lips with a hint of tint. Trust us, you’ll want to keep one in your purse, car, desk, and vanity.

Shade range

Most tinted lip balms don’t come in very many shades, maybe five or less. Colourpop is all about bringing the color though, and they didn’t disappoint with this shade range. There are 14 shades (16 if you count Chimichanga and Chubby Bunny at Ulta), and I think there is something for every skin tone and preference. There are bold shades like Treasure Island and Cutie Fruity, but there are several nude shades as well. I chose Shaka and City of stars because I thought they would be flattering with my neutral to warm undertone, and also because neither of those shades are very bold. Since this is a slippery formula, I didn’t want to risk having a bold shade come off on my teeth. I prefer matte lipsticks if I want a bold color.

My only complaint with Colourpop’s Just a Tint shade range, is that it’s actually a little bit too big. I think they might’ve been trying too hard. I appreciate their effort, but if you look at some of the nude shades, you’ll find that many of them are very similar, like Rise n Shine and Z Boys. I think that when there are similar shades in a range, that can make it very difficult for customers to choose their best shade. Fortunately, Colourpop provides lip swatches of every shade on three skin tones, so that helps with shade selection.

Packaging/ease of application

Since these tinted lip balms are “lip crayons,” their packaging is different from most tinted lip balms. The packaging is very nice-looking and comfortable to use. It’s much larger than a traditional lip balm with a large transparent cap, and twist-up bottom. I like that Colourpop has the shade names on top of the caps with “buttons” for lack of a better word, but the color of the buttons doesn’t match the actual lip crayon color. Fortunately, the tubes (the main packaging) do match the color of each shade quite well.

These lip crayons come with the product formed in a point, but over time that point wears down. I don’t really mind that much, but some people might want to keep the product sharpened for more precise application. It would’ve been nice if Colourpop had included a sharpener on the end to provide that option.

As far as actually using this product goes, it applies like a dream! The texture is very smooth. Most lip balms feel waxy (beeswax is often one of the first ingredients) and there is a bit of tugging when they’re applied, but this one has a very different texture. There is no resistance whatsoever and the product feels like it melts on the lips (in a good way).

Hydration

Since the texture of the Colourpop Just a Tint lip crayons is lightweight and smooth, you might think they’re not as hydrating as other lip balms. I’m here to tell you that they are actually very hydrating! They feel wonderfully hydrating upon application and wear down gracefully, but the hydration hangs on for hours.

As you can probably guess, these lip crayons are not transfer-proof and they will wear off faster if you eat or drink while wearing them. I still feel moisture on my lips even after eating a full meal, but to maintain the most hydration, it’s best to reapply after eating. Luckily, they are very easy to apply! The lighter shades wouldn’t even require a mirror for application, especially if you only apply one coat.

Team player

Colourpop Just a Tint lip crayons are versatile lip products. They look great on their own, but they can be dressed up by applying them with a lip liner (I like to use Essence 8H Waterproof Lipliner in the shade “Because Duh;” silly name, but I don’t care because it’s a light brown nude shade that works nicely with both City of Stars and Shaka). These could also be layered over a matte lipstick in a complementary shade, to add some shine. If you want to apply lip gloss over these lip crayons, that’s an option too; just make sure you blot first since the formula is already slick/glossy.

In these photos, I applied a few layers of each shade with the Essence lip liner that I mentioned above. The lip liner adds definition. I really like this look! 🙂

Price

If these were regular old lip balms, I’d say it’s crazy to charge $8.00. Since they’re tinted, hydrate the lips with nice ingredients like marula oil and shea butter, feel wonderful, work well with other products, AND have nice packaging, I think $8.00 is more than fair! These tinted lip balms are superior to others I’ve tried and they are well worth $8.00. Plus, if you get one of the lip kits that include two shades, you save $2.00 since the kits are $14.00. Great deal!

Colourpop did a great job designing and formulating the Just a Tint lip crayons. It’s truly an outstanding product!

There is one more thing I should note about this product, however. All of the shades have a fruity scent that is very strong. I don’t taste it, but the scent lingers for quite a while. Some people love it, others hate it, and I’m somewhere in the middle. If you don’t like fragrance in your lip products, this one probably isn’t for you. I think nearly everyone else would enjoy these lip crayons!

Do you like using tinted lip balms? If you do, have you tried these from Colourpop? I think they’re a step above the competition!

e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow–Opaque Long-Lasting Reflective Color

In last week’s product review on the Róen Beauty 11:11 eyeshadow palette, I went into detail about the “lid illume” formula and why it is perfect for quick and easy eye looks. While I enjoy that palette very much, I recognize that it might not be for everyone. Another option for simple yet beautiful eye looks, is liquid eyeshadow, particularly liquid metallic eyeshadow. Unfortunately, it’s a lot harder to find good liquid eyeshadows compared to powder eyeshadow palettes. There aren’t that many companies that even offer liquid eyeshadows, compared to the vast number that sell eyeshadow palettes.

Until very recently, the only liquid eyeshadow formula I’d tried that I enjoyed, was the Stila Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow. I like everything about Stila’s formula, but there is one big thing that I don’t like about that product: the price. It is $24.00! I saw them on sale for 50% off recently and was tempted to pick up another shade, but I’m glad I didn’t because just a day or two later e.l.f. launched its brand new Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow! I ordered the shades Galaxy and Aurora immediately, hoping that it would be a more affordable alternative to Stila’s product without compromising on quality.

Keep reading for my thoughts on this product after using it the last four or five days. I usually test products longer before reviewing, but in this case I was too excited to wait!

Packaging/ease of application

The e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows come in clear plastic packaging which makes the shade visible from every side. There is a short doe foot applicator that can be used to apply product directly to the eyelid or you can use a brush to take eyeshadow off of the applicator.

I use these eyeshadows a couple of different ways. The first method is to apply the product directly to my eyelid with the applicator and blend it out using a brush or my fingertip, working quickly because this formula dries very quickly. I find that when I use a brush, if I’m not extremely careful, there is some fallout. It isn’t too bad if you don’t over-blend. Using a fingertip instead of a brush to blend, seems to prevent fallout. It makes sense because a brush’s bristles move the product around a lot more than a fingertip will. Another thing that makes this method easier, is using a matte eyeshadow with a very similar color, in the crease. That way you won’t need to do as much blending.

I also like to use this liquid eyeshadow as eyeliner. It applies smoothly with a small angled eyeliner brush. I don’t experience any fallout when using this product as eyeliner.

The product description from e.l.f. states that the formula is buildable for day and night. I agree with that; you can apply a very small amount and blend it for lighter coverage or more product can be applied for intense color payoff. You can also add more product once some is already applied to build coverage slowly. If slowly building coverage, it’s important to wait until each layer is fully dried before adding more. Otherwise, eyeshadow lifts off of the eyelid and it can look patchy. I noticed that more with the Aurora shade, which is a little bit trickier overall since it is such a bold shade.

Overall, I’m very happy with the packaging and ease of application of this product. The Aurora shade can sometimes be a bit difficult, but that’s more user error than a problem with the product. However, I will say that if you aren’t very comfortable with bold shades, you will likely prefer the six neutral shades over Aurora or Supernova (unless you want to use them as eyeliner instead of eyeshadow; Aurora makes a gorgeous eyeliner).

In the photos below, I blended Galaxy all over my eyelid for an easy natural look, and used Aurora as a bold festive eyeliner. These are my preferred methods for each of these shades, but there are a lot of possibilities for these eyeshadows!

Inclusivity

Usually when I think about inclusivity in relation to makeup, the first thing that comes to mind is “will it work for any skin tone?” Judging by the two shades of e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow that I own, and swatches I’ve seen of the others, I believe this whole range will work for any skin tone. I’m not sure if they’re all opaque with just one swipe, but they can certainly be built up to be fully opaque, and I think that’s important for people with deep skin tones.

In this photo, I did only one swipe of each shade on my arm. If I had blended them out, the pigmentation wouldn’t be as intense, but I wanted to show that they can be quite opaque with only a single swipe of the applicator.

The shades currently offered are beautiful, but I think e.l.f. should add more options. I consider six of the eight shades to be neutral, with only two colorful/bold shades. Blue, silver, gunmetal, and even an icy white shade would be fun additions. I would love to see some duochrome shades too!

Texture

The texture of these eyeshadows is outstanding, and honestly I think they feel identical to the Stila Shimmer & Glow liquid eyeshadows. The e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows have a very pleasant, smooth texture. Some metallic eyeshadows are a bit chunky, but there isn’t any sort of grit with these. All you feel is the gel base, even though metallic pearls are suspended in the formula. That gel is the reason there is little to no fallout with this product! 🙂

Staying power

As I mentioned previously, this product dries down quickly so it is very important to work quickly. Once it sets, it does not budge. Not even a little bit. As the gel dries, it locks the color and shimmer in place. I am extremely impressed with the staying power of this eyeshadow. While it will crease on me eventually if I don’t use an eyeshadow primer, it looks good much longer than a powder eyeshadow would without primer. I will use a primer like my beloved Milani Eyeshadow Primer every time in the future, to get the best wear time possible. I’m in the habit of always using it with eyeshadow anyway since I have oily eyelids.

You might be concerned about the removal of this product since it hangs on to the skin so well. It’s actually surprisingly easy to remove! I never have any issues washing it off and I also don’t see any staining on my skin, even with the green Aurora shade.

Price

This won’t be surprising to anyone, but I am super happy about the price of this product! Only $5.00?!?! Once again, I greatly appreciate e.l.f.’s affordable prices (especially because I’ll probably be buying more shades). I will gladly pay $5.00 instead of $24.00 for Stila’s comparable product!

The one thing that Stila has over e.l.f. when comparing their liquid metallic eyeshadows, is that e.l.f.’s is 0.1 ounce and Stila’s is slightly larger at 0.153 ounces. I don’t have a problem with the e.l.f. product being smaller, because even though Stila offers about 50% more product, they also charge almost five times the price of e.l.f.’s Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows!

Quick Note about e.l.f. Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow

If you’ve been a fan of e.l.f. products for a while, you may know that they also have a range of liquid glitter eyeshadows. Those are a different formula from the metallic eyeshadows that I just reviewed. I own the Copper Pop shade in the Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow formula, and it is very different from the metallic formula. It is more of a glitter topper, with very little pigment. I vastly prefer the Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows, but the glitter formula remains a popular product that many people enjoy.

It was difficult for me to take any points away from this product in the ratings above, because it is just so good! The quality is really excellent and I will definitely be trying at least one more shade (probably more…). I usually don’t buy multiples of products, so you know it’s good!

I honestly believe the e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows are an excellent choice if you’ve been looking for an affordable alternative to Stila or any of the other more expensive liquid metallic eyeshadows on the market. The quality of these knocks my socks off, especially for $5.00! If you’ve never tried liquid metallic eyeshadows, this is a great opportunity since this product is so affordable and the shades are stunning. 🙂

Have you ever used a liquid metallic eyeshadow? If you enjoy them, I challenge you to try these and see how they compare with other brands!

Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35–Mineral & Antioxidant Protection Against the Elements

It’s the middle of December and the sun rarely shows itself where I live. So why am I writing about sunscreen today? Well, it’s simple. Many think that if you aren’t spending time outside on a sunny day, that your skin is safe from the sun. Unfortunately, that isn’t true. UV rays can penetrate clouds and windows, so you need sunscreen daily, rain or shine, to protect your skin from sun damage. The safest option is a daily mineral sunscreen formulated with zinc oxide.

Mineral sunscreens, and those formulated with zinc oxide in particular, often leave an unattractive white cast on the skin. That doesn’t always matter, especially if you plan to wear foundation every day. However, I like to give my skin a break from makeup at least one or two days a week, so I prefer sunscreens that are invisible or tinted to blend in with my skin tone. A tinted zinc oxide sunscreen that has become very popular recently, is the Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen. A couple of months ago, I decided to give the Versed Guards Up sunscreen a shot because it looked like a product that would work for any skin tone, while also hydrating the skin (good option for dry skin or almost anyone in the winter). I wanted to see if it would live up to the hype. Read on to learn more, but first I’ll share some information about Versed.

I’m not sure exactly when Versed (as in “well versed”) launched, but it is a fairly new cruelty-free skincare company. Versed makes a bold claim, that it’s “the cleanest drugstore skincare brand,” meeting EU standards which ban 1,300+ ingredients. Versed formulates products with a “best of science and nature” approach so that the most effective ingredients are used, whether naturally derived or synthetic. Versed also has high standards to do what is best for consumer health, our planet, and innocent animals.

Product claims directly from VersedSkin.com

This mineral SPF 35 with lightweight moisture provides invisible, three-way protection against the elements—environmental pollution, electronic pollution (from screen time), and of course, the sun. Its oil-free formula with a creamy texture has a natural finish—not too dewy, not too matte—and doesn’t leave a white or gray cast on your skin. The non-nano zinc oxide (the safest SPF active available for our bodies and our oceans) works at the skin’s surface to physically prevent UVA and UVB rays from penetrating your skin. It helps block HEV (high energy visible) light too. All the while, antioxidants fight off environmental and blue light (aka HEV) damage for 360 protection and all the anti-aging benefits that come along with it. It’s broad-spectrum sun protection for your everyday life. Yes, every day—rain or shine, outdoors and in.

Please note that I am not a skincare professional. I am simply an individual that enjoys learning about and using skincare products. Speak to your dermatologist or esthetician if you have any concerns.

Sun protection

One of the most important things to look for in a sunscreen is broad spectrum protection. When you see the term “broad spectrum,” that means that the product will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens that do not offer broad spectrum protection will not protect you from UVA rays. UVA rays were not always fully understood like they are today, but we need to be protected from them since UVA rays, like UVB, damage the skin’s DNA and can lead to skin cancer. UVA rays also penetrate the skin deeply to cause premature signs of aging. Fortunately, this sunscreen does provide broad spectrum protection!

The second thing to note is SPF factor. Sunscreens with an SPF factor of 15 provide 93% protection from UV rays (7% of UV rays are able to reach your skin), while SPF 30 provides 97% protection and SPF 50 provides 98% protection. No sunscreen can provide 100% protection, SPF 100 is very close with 99% protection. The Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen has an SPF factor of 35 so it provides just over 97% protection, which is not bad. Since I am fair-skinned and burn easily, I wish it was SPF 50 or higher (to be fair, most if not all mineral sunscreens are SPF 50 or lower).

Lastly, if you plan on sweating a lot or spending time in water, it’s important to look for a sunscreen that is water-resistant. Otherwise, it will quickly wash away leaving your skin unprotected. This Versed sunscreen is not water-resistant. That is fine for me most days, since I spend most of my time indoors and I don’t sweat very much on my face unless I’m very active or spending time outdoors in the summer.

While overall I am pleased with the sun protection provided by the Versed Guards Up sunscreen, I think it’s a good idea to also have an alternate sunscreen with a higher SPF factor and water-resistance for days spent in direct sunlight or in the water. My go-to sunscreen is the Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Sunscreen Lotion which provides slightly more sun protection and is also water-resistant. This isn’t the last time I’ll be mentioning the Australian Gold sunscreen because it is my favorite and I tend to compare all others to its performance and protection.

Ingredients

Since Versed is known for creating clean skincare products, I didn’t think this sunscreen would have as many ingredients as others. I must admit that I was very wrong! There are 38 ingredients in this formula. That isn’t a bad thing though; sunscreens are complicated and there are a lot of necessary “helper” ingredients to make it the best it can be.

Active ingredient (mineral sunscreen): non-nano zinc oxide 15.2%

Inactive ingredients: water/aqua/eau, butyloctyl salicylate, isodecyl neopentanoate, calcium sodium borosilicate, diheptyl succinate, c18-21 alkane, erythritol, cetearyl alcohol, sodium stearoyl glutamate, capryloyl glycerin/sebacic acid copolymer, propanediol, arachidyl alcohol, glycerin, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, caprylic/capric triglyceride, tocopherol, caprylyl glycol, coco-glucoside, ethyl ferulate, behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, arachidyl glucoside, bisabolol, polyhydroxystearic acid, citric acid, sodium gluconate, xanthan gum, octyldodecyl oleate, caprylhydroxamic acid, hydrolyzed jojoba esters, sodium hyaluronate, crithmum maritimum extract, maltodextrin, moringa oleifera seed extract, aloe barbadensis leaf, iron oxides ci 77491, iron oxides ci 77492

This is a scary looking list, I know. BUT, there are a lot of really good ingredients within this list and no bad ingredients that should be avoided. I’ll list the standout ingredients below (I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!):

  • Erythritol
    • Humectant
    • Emollient
  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract
    • Moisturizing
    • Contains acids (like malic and gallic acids) that are mild chemical exfoliants
    • Brightens skin
    • Antibacterial
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Ethyl ferulate
    • Antioxidant
    • May also be used as a preservative
  • Bisabolol
    • Soothes skin
  • Hydrolyzed jojoba esters
    • Contains essential fatty acids
    • Retains moisture
    • Forms film to make skin feel smooth
  • Sodium hyaluronate
    • Sodium form of hyaluronic acid (humectant)
  • Crithmum maritimum (sea fennel) extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Conditions, softens, and soothes the skin
    • Emollient
    • May be a natural retinol alternative
  • Moringa oleifera seed extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Emollient
  • Aloe barbadensis leaf extract
    • Moisturizes
    • Anti-inflammatory

While the majority of the ingredients in this sunscreen are “neutral” or “helper” ingredients like thickeners, solvents, and colorants, I am very happy to see so many skin-loving ingredients also included in the formula! Many of these ingredients are moisturizing and soothing, which means this sunscreen may be a good option for use during winter months to combat dry skin.

Team player

This Versed sunscreen has a lot going for it, but it does not always interact very well with other products. I think at least part of it is the texture; it looks like it should be smooth, but it’s slightly gritty and I can’t figure out why. I have a couple of different morning moisturizers I’m currently using and I’ve found that this sunscreen sometimes pills and looks flaky over one of them even though it feels moisturizing. It looks just fine when applied with the other moisturizer, which is very odd. Some products just don’t interact well with each other, so it’s entirely possible that others wouldn’t have any issues applying this sunscreen over their skincare.

The bigger problem with this product, in this category, is that foundation does not apply very well on top. You would think that since this product is so moisturizing, that foundations would apply smoothly over it. Unfortunately, I’ve found that when I apply foundations over this sunscreen, it gets flaky. It’s manageable if I’m careful to apply foundation by stamping or stippling it on, but if you rub over the skin, it’s flake city and does not look good!

Since I discovered the problem with my foundations applying poorly over this sunscreen, I’ve started wearing it almost exclusively on no-makeup days and it works just fine for me that way. I should also mention here that part of the reason this sunscreen works well without any makeup, is that the tint is very effective. The tint is a light peachy color, but it’s not highly pigmented, so it’s just enough to take away the white cast without providing any coverage.

Ease of removal

One thing I like about this product is that it’s very easy to remove. On my no-makeup days that I’m using this sunscreen, I don’t need to do a double cleanse to remove it from my skin; it removes easily with face wash without any extra scrubbing. I think this is mainly due to the fact that this sunscreen is not water-resistant and therefore breaks down easily in water. Water-resistance is a double-edged sword; it’s nice when you need it, but if you don’t it can make sunscreen behave like foundation in that it can be quite difficult to remove.

Price

Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 is $21.99 for 1.7 ounces of product. That comes out to $12.94 per ounce, which is a lot for a drugstore sunscreen. To compare, the Australian Gold tinted face sunscreen is $13.99 for 3 ounces or only $4.66 per ounce! BIG difference. I rated the ingredients and ease of removal higher for this product than I did for the Australian Gold sunscreen, but in my humble opinion, Australian Gold is superior in every other way…and for that reason, I don’t believe the Versed Guards Up sunscreen is worth the price.

I didn’t hold back any of my thoughts on this product. It has flaws, and honestly, once I run out I don’t plan on repurchasing it since I vastly prefer my Australian Gold sunscreen. With that said, I don’t think it’s an entirely bad product, and many people enjoy it very much.

I have combination skin, so it’s very possible that Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 would work much better for someone with dry skin. It is definitely a very moisturizing formula. In fact, it never dries down to a matte finish; it remains slightly tacky, which confirms that it’s providing hydration to the skin.

Sunscreens are very tricky to get right. It’s possible that I’m pickier than most people with my sunscreen, but the only one I’ve found that I genuinely enjoy using, is Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Mineral Lotion. Please comment below with your favorite face sunscreen!

Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash–Refresh Skin & Banish Bacteria

If you’ve read my previous skincare and body care product reviews, you probably know I’m not the biggest fan of most essential oils because they can sensitize the skin. Essential oils are usually added to beauty products as natural fragrances, but that is not true for all of them. Tea tree oil is a unique essential oil because while it can be sensitizing if a high concentration is applied to the skin, in smaller amounts it can be quite beneficial. It is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, and is also good for treating acne. Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash

Tea tree oil can be found in a variety of products. It is especially popular as a natural option for treating acne and other skin concerns. I am fortunate that I no longer get blemishes on my skin very often, but I still enjoy using some tea tree oil products for their antibacterial property. I’m currently using Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash. My skin always feels extra refreshed thanks to the peppermint scent, and I enjoy knowing that the tea tree oil will banish bacteria so I can feel extra squeaky clean.

Packaging/ease of application

Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash is packaged in a very attractive bottle with a pump. It looks so nice in my shower and the pump works great. I vastly prefer a pump for my body wash over a squeeze tube. It’s nice to be able to pump out more product as needed rather than needing to open the bottle every time I need more.

My one complaint in this category, and the reason I deducted two points, is that I need to use much more of this body wash than I do with other body washes. I like body wash that produces a nice lather, and while this one does that, I have to use about twice as much as I would with other body washes. I assume this is due to the natural ingredients used in this product.

Cleansing

While I wish I didn’t need to use as much of this product to get my body clean, I have to give credit where credit is due. This body wash does an excellent job of getting my skin very clean. Most body washes accomplish that goal for me, but this one goes above and beyond because of its antibacterial property! My skin always feels fresh and completely clean after I’ve used this body wash.

Ingredients

It was difficult for me to rate the ingredients in this body wash. You’ll understand why once I’ve described each of the 11 ingredients:

Aqua, Saponified Oils of Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil* and Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Vegetable Glycerin*, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil*, Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum, Melaleuca Alternafolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, Litsea Cubeba (Litsea) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract

*certified organic

  • Aqua (Water)
    • Solvent for other ingredients
  • Saponified Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil
    • Surfactant
    • Emulsifier
    • Sunflower seed oil mixed with potassium hydroxide and water, and heated, turning the oil into soap
    • Sunflower seed oil improves a damaged or irritated skin barrier and contains fatty acids which help to keep skin hydrated
  • Saponified Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil
    • Surfactant
    • Emulsifier
    • Coconut oil mixed with potassium hydroxide and water, and heated, turning the oil into soap
    • Coconut oil moisturizes and seals in moisture
  • Vegetable Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil
    • Refreshing/cooling essential oil
    • Potential skin irritant for some, while also possessing the ability to soothe itchy skin in others (doesn’t make much sense, does it?)
    • Mild antibacterial property
  • Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum
    • Natural thickener
  • Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil
    • Antibacterial
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • May clear blemishes
    • Irritating only if used in concentrations over 10%
  • Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil
    • Fragrance that may cause sensitization
    • May be effective for treating acne

  • Litsea Cubeba (Litsea) Oil
    • Fragrance that may cause sensitization
    • Antibacterial
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
    • Wax ester that stays on the skin surface to moisturize and make skin soft
  • Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract
    • Antibacterial
    • Astringent
    • Contains rosmarinic acid, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

There are many skin benefits found in most of these ingredients. The thing that concerns me, however, is how high peppermint oil is on the ingredient list. While it may be soothing for some people, it can have the opposite effect for others. I’m very surprised to see an essential oil this high up the list, since it could have quite a high concentration. Fortunately, this is a body wash rather than a leave-on product, which means this product isn’t very likely to be irritating to most people, despite the potentially irritating essential oils.

I was surprised and impressed to see that five of the ingredients have antibacterial properties. I think that is probably the main reason Beauty by Earth recommends this product for acne-prone skin.

Fragrance

I recognize the risks of using essential oils in skincare and body care products, but in this body wash, they create a very pleasant fragrance. I mostly smell the peppermint oil, but I can also detect the scent of tea tree oil slightly. I enjoy the smell of peppermint, especially this time of year. It’s such a clean and refreshing fragrance, and reminds me of candy canes!

Price

Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash is $21.99 and there are a lot of things that must be taken into consideration when determining if that is a fair price or not. There are a lot of pros with this product: it is all natural, packaged nicely, cleans well, and smells great. On the other hand, more of this product is needed for thorough cleansing compared to a traditional body wash (which means it won’t last as long), it contains potentially irritating essential oils, and $21.99 is a much higher price than what I would usually pay for a body wash. While this is a good product, I think it is just a little bit overpriced.

I have really been enjoying using my Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash, especially now that the holiday season is in full swing!

Just like with most of the products I review, this body wash isn’t for everyone. If you know you’re sensitive to essential oils, particularly peppermint oil, it might be best to pass on this body wash.

For others, this might be just the thing you’re looking for. A lot of body washes contain synthetic ingredients that can be drying to the skin. This product is a good natural alternative to those traditional body washes.

Do you enjoy using body wash, or do you prefer bar soap? I use both, but have been reaching for this body wash more often lately. 🙂

Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette–Unique Foolproof Shades Formulated with Clean Ingredients

I very much enjoy applying eyeshadow and using a variety of eyeshadow brushes, but that wasn’t always the case. When I first became interested in makeup, I was intimidated by eyeshadow. I didn’t know which colors went where, what types of brushes I should use, etc. There’s a lot to learn. It’s also time consuming to do an eye look that involves several different shades.

Róen Beauty 11:11If you are intimidated by eyeshadow, don’t want to buy many eye brushes, don’t have time to do complicated eye looks, simply enjoy a good eyeshadow palette, or any combination of those things, I’ve got a very interesting palette that you may find tempting! The Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette is the most unique eyeshadow palette I’ve ever owned. It’s also the first clean beauty eyeshadow palette I ever purchased. The eyeshadows in this palette are difficult to describe, as they are not powder or cream eyeshadows (though they’re closer to a cream formula); Róen refers to them as “lid illumes.” Three of the four shades are shimmers and the fourth is a beautiful glitter topper.

I bought this Róen palette as a birthday gift for myself earlier this year. At the time, I didn’t have time for eyeshadow very often and I missed it. The 11:11 palette appealed to me because it is designed for all shades to be easily and quickly applied with fingers and I thought it might be a good option for me to work eyeshadow back into my quick morning makeup routine. It did not disappoint!

Róen Beauty just launched in 2019, so many of you may not be familiar with this company. I only heard about the brand last spring from one of my favorite YouTubers. Róen is a clean beauty brand that creates innovative high-performance luxury products. Róen strives to make beautiful glamorous products without compromising on clean ingredients and ethical practices.

Product details directly from RoenBeauty.com

This MAGICAL Palette was tested by artists and real-women combined. The consensus is that it’s easy to use and fool-proof, even for those that have the fear of eye shadow. No shades in the 11:11 Palette will go unused; they are the staple colors you will actually use and love. Methodically designed, they mix well with each other or stand out alone.

Please note that I am not a makeup artist. The opinions expressed in this review are my own, as a regular person that loves makeup.

Inclusivity

The shades in this palette are perfect for everyday wear, but far from boring since they add sparkle to any eye look. They are neutrals that would be approachable to almost anyone. They’re also quite versatile to fit individual preferences and skin tones. For example, you can go in with a very light layer for a light wash of color, or build it up for a more saturated glamorous look.

Róen recommends using a brush to apply a diffused wash of color, or using a fingertip for more pigmentation. I’ve tried applying these eyeshadows with a brush before and it didn’t work for me at all. I think a fingertip will work better for this product every time. You can still get that light wash of color if that’s what you prefer. The color can be blended out easily and won’t look overly pigmented unless you add more product.

I built up the color in the eye swatches below to show that the colors translate quite well from the pan to the eyes.

Texture

These eyeshadows have the most unique texture I’ve ever experienced, so I think it’s appropriate that Róen gave them a special name, “lid illumes.” I’ve never used another product that compares to these, but the closest thing would probably be the Colourpop super shock eyeshadows which are a creamy texture that applies best with a fingertip. These “lid illumes” are more firm than those are, however.

There are two textures in this palette. Hashtag, Ciao!, and Rosie are firm but smooth, and respond well to the heat from fingertips, becoming more creamy. That’s another reason I prefer to apply these with fingertips. Situation is different from the other three shades. It is flaky with chunks of glitter and not nearly as easy to work with as the others. Fortunately, Situation is more of a topper and it works just fine for that purpose.

One big plus with this formula is that there is little to no fallout! I don’t think I have ever experienced fallout from Hashtag, Ciao!, or Rosie. Fallout can be a problem with Situation, especially if you’re trying to pick up enough to use it as the only eyeshadow, like I did in the top right in the graphic above. I don’t normally experience fallout when I carefully apply Situation as a topper, and that is usually the way I use it.

Pigmentation

None of the shades in this palette are ultra-pigmented. However, I think that’s a good thing since this palette is meant to give the user options to keep the eye look subtle or build it up to be more colorful. I am very happy with the pigmentation of these shades. Some liquid or cream eyeshadows that have shimmer come off as shimmer with no color, but these provide as little or as much color payoff as you want.

In these swatches, I did two swipes per shade.

Staying power

One drawback of many liquid and cream eyeshadows is that they crease. Unfortunately, Róen’s formula also creases. Eyeshadow primer is an absolute must with this palette if creasing bothers you. I find that eyeshadow primer delays and minimizes the creasing, but it does still happen for me most days. The good news is that if you experience creasing with these “lid illumes,” it’s easy to tap back over your eyelid and it blends back together again.

Other than creasing, the staying power of these eyeshadows is excellent. They never smudge or fade. In fact, I had a hard time removing the swatches I did for this post! At a certain point I called it “good enough” and left my arm looking a bit stained from the three pigmented shades. I’ve never noticed staining on my eyelids, but that’s probably because I use eyeshadow primer.

Price

Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette is a luxury product and it is certainly priced as such. It is $42.00 for four shades which means that each shade is a whopping $10.50! The pans are not very large either, so this price tag is quite high. It’s safe to say that this isn’t the best choice if you’re shopping on a budget. That being said, I recognize that luxury items come at a high price, and for good reason (in this case, anyway). Róen is doing a lot of things right as far as using clean ingredients, practicing high ethical standards, and using sustainable recyclable packaging. The product itself is very interesting and unique, and the palette design is sleek and beautiful. You can’t find anything like this from any other brand that I’m aware of.

Other Róen palettes

If you’re interested in Róen’s formula, but you aren’t loving the shades in the 11:11 palette, there are a couple of other options that are the same size and price. The 75° Warm Eyeshadow Palette includes gold, warm taupe, dark brown, and terracotta. There is an option for those that prefer cool tones as well; the 52° Cool Eyeshadow Palette includes rose gold, purple, taupe/gray, and gunmetal. I don’t own either of those palettes, but they look beautiful!

I’m really glad I ordered the Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette when I did, because I’ve very much enjoyed using it! I don’t use it nearly as often now that I have more time to do full eye looks using powder eyeshadow palettes, but I still use it from time to time and love the simple yet beautiful eye looks I create with it. It’s so easy to pull it out and use one or two shades to look a little more “put together.”

While this palette is quite pricey, I think it’s a good product to consider for anyone that loves eyeshadow but has a hard time finding time for it. These “lid illumes” can be applied in just a couple of minutes!

Have you ever tried Róen products? Their product selection is small, but I expect it will expand over time. I look forward to seeing what they release next!

Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser–Gentle Anti-Aging Face Wash

DISCLAIMER: At the time this blog post was written, Paula’s Choice was owned by TA Associates, a private equity firm. Unilever, which is not cruelty-free, announced on June 14, 2021, that it would be acquiring Paula’s Choice. Since I do not support cruelty-free companies owned by parent companies that are not cruelty-free, I will no longer purchase or review Paula’s Choice products.  I am not removing this review since I know many of my readers will still want to support Paula’s Choice.

Paula’s Choice is one of the most trusted brands in skincare due to its many years of research and formulas backed by science. The company offers a wide range of collections for a variety of skin concerns and preferences, but one of the most popular is the Paula’s Choice Resist line. Products in the Resist collection are formulated for anti-aging, with options for both normal to dry and normal to oily skin types.

I previously reviewed Paula’s Choice Resist Weightless Advanced Repairing Toner. While products from the Paula’s Choice Resist collection can be used effectively in conjunction with products from any of the other collections, or other brands entirely, I think this toner pairs very well with the Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser. Both products are lightly hydrating and contain very effective skincare ingredients which are best suited for normal, combination, and oily skin types. Paula’s Choice Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser is this product’s dry skin counterpart. Since I have combination skin, I use Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser and that is the product that I’ll be reviewing in this post.

Packaging/ease of application

Paula’s Choice always does a good job designing quality packaging. This face wash is packaged in an opaque pump, which is perfect for protecting active ingredients and also for making it easy to dispense the product.

The face wash itself smooths easily over the skin. A little goes a long way with this product, which I appreciate. Paula’s Choice suggests using 1-2 pumps per use, but I don’t ever need that much.

Cleansing

The description of this product states that it will remove makeup, impurities, and excess oil. I agree with that claim…mostly. However, I do find that it doesn’t always remove all of my makeup, especially around my eyes.

I’ve recently started using this cleanser primarily as the second part of my double cleanse (after using a cleansing balm) and I think that’s the best way to use it. I’m careful to remove all the makeup around my eyes with cleansing balm but I’m not always so thorough with the rest of my face, and this face wash sweeps everything else away easy-peasy. My face feels very clean and refreshed after I’ve used this cleanser.

Texture

The texture of this face wash is quite unique. It feels like a cream cleanser, but most cream cleansers don’t foam or remove makeup effectively. This one does both (for the most part). It feels very creamy and luxurious on the skin and once it’s massaged in it becomes foamy, which I feel helps with the effective cleansing action.

The texture of this face wash is also very smooth and gentle. It is completely non-abrasive and non-irritating. It feels wonderful on the skin!

Ingredients

Like all Paula’s Choice products I’ve reviewed, this face wash has an impressive ingredient list! It is comprised of a healthy mix of skin-loving ingredients and also many “neutral” ingredients that make the product more effective. While I am not a skincare expert, I believe it’s safe to say that all the ingredients in this formula are gentle and effective.

Water, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Glycol Distearate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Acrylates Copolymer, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, Phospholipids, Sphingolipids, Lecithin, Arginine, Cholesterol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol

There are 12 ingredients in this face wash that I’ve labeled as “good” which means they provide benefits to the skin beyond simply cleansing or supporting the formula:

  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Sunflower seed oil
    • Improves damaged or irritated skin barrier
    • Loaded with fatty acids
    • Non-fragrant
  • Sodium hyaluronate
    • Sodium form of hyaluronic acid (humectant)
  • Ceramide NP & Ceramide AP
    • Two types of ceramides, which are long chains of lipids that are major components of skin’s extracellular matrix (the substance between skin cells)
    • Protect skin barrier
    • Improve the look and feel of dry skin
  • Ceramide EOP
    • First discovered type of ceramide
    • Contains linoleic acid
      • Omega-6 fatty acid
      • Very important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier
      • Lightens hyperpigmentation
    • Plays a “binding role” in the lipid layers of the extracellular matrix
    • Protects skin barrier
    • Improves the look and feel of dry skin
  • Phytosphingosine
    • Complex fatty alcohol that functions as a water-binding agent
    • Found naturally in skin as part of its natural defense system
  • Sphingolipids
    • Complex long-chain lipids that replenish and condition skin
  • Lecithin
    • Water-binding agent
    • Skin-restoring
  • Arginine
    • Amino acid that hydrates the skin
  • Cholesterol
    • Important lipid found naturally in the extracellular matrix (about 25% is cholesterol)
    • Works with ceramides and fatty acids to maintain a healthy skin barrier and keep skin hydrated
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract
    • Moisturizes
    • Anti-inflammatory

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this face wash contains three types of ceramides! None of my other skincare products contain ceramides, but they are always good to see on an ingredient list because they are so important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

The only complaint I have about the ingredient list is a small one. Most of the beneficial ingredients listed above are in the middle of the list instead of closer to the top, which means the concentrations probably aren’t very high. However, this is a cleanser, not a leave-on product, and therefore I don’t think it’s as important to see these ingredients at the top. I see this cleanser more as a small boost in my skincare regimen; I’m happy to get any added benefit that it can provide beyond cleansing.

Price

Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser is $19.00 which is a little bit more expensive than most of the face washes I’ve used through the years. However, it’s important to note that not all cleansers are created equally. This one is packaged well, cleanses effectively, feels luxuriously creamy, and is formulated with quality skin-loving ingredients. It also doesn’t take much product to get the job done, so a bottle of this face wash lasts a long time. I think $19.00 is a fair price for this product.

Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser is an exceptional face wash and a great first step (or part two of a double cleanse) in a skincare routine. It cleanses without drying, and provides ingredients skin needs to stay healthy.

Paula’s Choice labels this product as being for normal to combination skin, but I’m inclined to think that it would also work quite well for dry skin. This face wash doesn’t strip moisture from the skin like many do, and nearly all the skin-loving ingredients I listed above hydrate or condition the skin in some way. I think this face wash would be especially good for someone with sensitive skin since it is so gentle. Basically, I think this product would work well for anyone. 🙂

Have you tried any face washes or other types of skincare products from Paula’s Choice? They have a wide array of products and I’m always curious to know which ones are the best!

Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation–Lightweight High Coverage Matte Foundation

The two coverage products that I have previously reviewed are Colourpop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Acid Tinted Moisturizer and Colourpop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation. These are both hydrating products that provide a natural skin-like finish. I think both Colourpop products work well for combination and oily skin, but many people with those skin types look for foundations with a matte finish. Matte foundations are usually the most long-wearing, especially for people that produce excess oils, and they provide a soft airbrushed look to the skin. It’s no surprise that matte foundations are appealing to many.

Since I’m a makeup enthusiast, I like to have a variety of textures and finishes in my foundation collection. When Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation was released and touted as a dupe for Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, I knew I had to try it (this Fenty foundation is very popular, but Fenty hasn’t responded to some questions about animal testing and the product costs $35.00). Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation is meant to be a lightweight high coverage natural-finish foundation, but it looks very matte to me. The front of the bottle even has “mattifying” printed on it. Some matte foundations are very heavy, and the light texture of this one appealed to me. I don’t like feeling like I’m wearing a mask when I wear foundation.

Catrice is a very affordable drugstore brand. Many of their products are highly rated, but for some reason I don’t hear much about the brand. Catrice is best-known for complexion products, so I was very excited to try their HD Liquid Coverage Foundation.

Product claims directly from CatriceCosmetics.com

Hi-Def Coverage! Catrice’s HD Liquid Coverage Foundation is an ultra-lightweight, high coverage foundation for a natural looking finish. Covers imperfections and mattifies the skin creating a smooth and even complexion for up to 24 hours. Features a unique dropper applicator.

Please note that I am not a makeup artist. The opinions expressed in this review are my own, as a regular person that loves makeup.

Inclusivity

When Catrice first launched this foundation, the shade range was abysmal…maybe only ten shades. A high coverage foundation like this one really needs to have a large shade range since the shades are far from flexible.

I bought this foundation when the shade range was still quite small, so the shade I have (010 Light Beige) is actually a little dark for my fair skin tone. There are now three shades available that are lighter than Light Beige. The full range consists of 26 shades that range from 002 Porcelain to 098 Deep Mocha.

While I appreciate that Catrice added more fair and light shades, I think they should’ve added more deep shades as well. The majority of the range seems to consist of light and medium shades. This is subjective since Catrice doesn’t include shade descriptions, but I would only call five of the shades deep or dark. Another problem is that the deepest shade in the range doesn’t appear to be dark enough for the deepest skin tones. This seems to be somewhat common and it isn’t right.

While I’m very glad that Catrice expanded this foundation’s shade range, they really need to add even more shades. So many brands now are doing a great job with inclusive shade ranges, I think it would be wise for Catrice to do the same. For comparison purposes, Colourpop has a very inclusive wide shade range that includes 42 shades in their Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation. Colourpop, can you give Catrice some pointers, please? 😉

Packaging/ease of application

Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation has unique packaging. Instead of a pump or squeeze tube, this foundation is packaged in a glass bottle with a dropper. The dropper works well to dispense the product since it is such a lightweight liquid formula.

I like that with the dropper, you can either dispense the foundation directly on your skin, or drop the amount you need on your hand or another surface like the e.l.f. Artist Mixing Palette. I prefer to dispense the product onto the mixing palette instead of directly on my skin because I think that method prevents you from accidentally applying too much.

This foundation is easy to quickly blend out on the skin. The only caveat here is that since this foundation is so lightweight and liquid, it does dry quickly and therefore you need to work quickly. That also means that you wouldn’t want to try to build more coverage with this foundation. You can use a little for medium coverage or more for full coverage, but don’t try to build it up once you’ve applied it to your whole face.

In this photo, the foundation was freshly applied (the only other product on my face was powder). I applied it to the left side of my face (right side in photo) with a sponge and the right side (left side in photo) with a foundation brush. I really didn’t see a difference from one side to the other, so I think it’s fine to use the tool that you’re most comfortable with.

Hydration

If you are looking for a hydrating foundation, this one is not for you. I wouldn’t say that it’s drying, but it also is not hydrating at all in my opinion. This may be a problem for people with dry skin, but for others, I think it’s probably fine as long as you use a good moisturizer before applying the foundation.

I looked through the ingredient list and the only ingredient that jumped out at me as a hydrator was glycerin, and it was almost halfway down the list.

I tried adding a drop of e.l.f. All The Feels Facial Oil a couple of times since some foundations mix well with oils to make them more hydrating. Unfortunately, it did not work. I didn’t notice much difference in how the foundation felt on my skin, but I did notice that it broke apart more quickly.

Staying power

I think the wear time, or time that this makeup looks good, will vary greatly from person to person. That’s because this foundation has a tendency to settle into fine lines very quickly and “crack” in any other places that you might move your face. It’s not obvious from a distance when this foundation settles into my fine lines, but I think someone with more mature skin and deeper wrinkles, might be unhappy with the way it looks on their skin.

On the other hand, I’ve found that this foundation does wear very well on my cheeks where I don’t have any fine lines. It also wears surprisingly well under a mask. It’s important to note here that I do always powder my face, and also usually use a setting spray. It might rub off quickly under a mask without the help of those other products.

I did an 8-hour wear test with this foundation yesterday. I finished applying all of my makeup at 11:00 a.m. and you can see that it looked very nice at that time. However, after only a couple of hours I could see it settling into all my fine lines, especially on my forehead. Some of the foundation also came off around my nose because it was running (thanks, fall allergies) and I had to wipe it with a tissue. I took the 3:00 and 7:00 photos without smiling to try to make the breakdown around my fine lines more visible. There was very little difference from 3:00 to 7:00, and other than the “problem areas” (fine lines), it still looked pretty nice at 7:00.

Price

There are only a few cruelty-free brands at the drugstore that can beat the price of this foundation. I think $11.00 is very fair considering the nice packaging. A little goes a long way, so a bottle of this will last a very long time. If you think this foundation would work well on your skin tone and skin type, definitely don’t hesitate to spend the $11.00!

While Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation is not perfect, I don’t think it’s a bad product. The packaging is nice and the formula provides good coverage that’s comfortable to wear all day (though it definitely wouldn’t last 24 hours like Catrice claims).

Before buying this foundation, remember that it isn’t ideal for everyone. Make sure there is a good shade match available, consider your skin type, and also think about any fine lines and wrinkles you may have. I’d like to note here that I usually don’t use a primer. If you have fine lines and use a primer that does a good job of filling them in, this foundation may work very well for you!

Are there any lightweight foundations that you enjoy? I definitely like how this one feels on my skin, I just don’t like how quickly it settles into lines. If you have any suggestions, please share them in the comments below! 🙂
