Like many people, I have some under-eye darkness that I want to camouflage or cover up on days that I wear makeup. My favorite way of doing that is with a peachy color-corrector like Pixi by Petra Correction Concentrate. Unfortunately, there are some days where a color-corrector doesn’t cut it and I need a little extra brightening after my foundation is applied over the color-corrector. There are also some days that I forget to color-correct before applying foundation and then I find myself needing some extra coverage under my eyes. For both the days that I need extra brightening, and the days I forget my color-corrector, it’s nice to have a good concealer on hand to be sure I’ll always have sufficient coverage.

I struggled with finding a concealer that worked for me for a long time. Most of them I tried were too matte and looked cakey under my eyes, or dried so quickly that I didn’t have time to blend them out properly. What I wanted was a concealer that would provide me with some extra coverage, give me time to blend, and dry to a satin finish that wouldn’t look too dry on my under-eyes. When the e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer launched early this year, I thought it might fit my needs. I’ve enjoyed most of the e.l.f. products I’ve tried through the years and was excited to try this one too!

Please note that I have used this concealer very little on blemishes and primarily use it to brighten my under-eyes. I will be reviewing its effectiveness when used in that manner. However, most of my review will be more general information, so I hope you will continue reading regardless of how you may intend to use this product. 🙂

Inclusivity

Most concealers don’t have very large shade ranges compared to foundations since they are not generally used all over the face and therefore don’t need to match skin’s natural color as closely as a foundation should. Most concealers come in fewer than 20 shades, but not this one! E.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer comes in 25 shades. There are fair, light, medium, tan, deep, and rich shades with cool, neutral, and warm undertones. Additionally, the shades are fairly distributed instead of most of the shades being on the lighter end of the spectrum (that is still a common problem, sadly). 

I’m really impressed with this shade range! There seems to be an option for everyone.

Packaging/ease of application

E.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is packaged similarly to most popular concealers, in a clear plastic tube with a large doe foot applicator. I like that type of applicator because it’s easy to dot on a tiny amount of product, or swipe across a larger area. The other important thing to note about the packaging is that the cap/handle is white. The original 16HR Camo Concealer has a black cap/handle.

I’m baffled by the amount of concealer some people use under their eyes. I’ve found that the only way I can make this or any concealer look good under my eyes is to use the smallest amount possible and concentrate most of it in the inner corner which is where I have the most darkness to cover. If you have fine lines or wrinkles under your eyes, then I strongly suggest that you also only use a very small amount of this concealer as I’ve found that a little goes a long way. If you use too much, it will quickly settle into every line.

The other trick to making this concealer look good with fine lines and wrinkles, is to make sure you pat over it to remove any creases before setting lightly with powder…and powder is a must (at least for me it is).

Please understand that I am not saying this is a bad concealer because it settles into my fine lines. I’m pretty sure I’ve experienced that with every single concealer I’ve used in my adult life. This concealer is actually easier to use compared to a lot of others because it doesn’t dry down immediately. With this one, you have plenty of time to blend.

As far as tools, it can be blended out with fingertips, a sponge, or a brush. My preferred blending tool is a brush, but I think the other options work well enough, so it really comes down to personal preference.

Hydration

It’s important to me that any concealer I use should provide at least a little bit of hydration. My under-eyes aren’t particularly dry, but I feel like many products make them look dry after just a couple of hours. That’s not a good look. Dry cakey under-eyes can make a person look much older than they actually are, and some extra hydration can go a long way in maintaining the appearance of smooth youthful under-eyes.

Thankfully, e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is as promised, a hydrating concealer that dries to a satin finish. It feels very hydrating upon application, and I think that is part of the reason that it takes longer to dry down compared to a lot of other concealers. The hydrating property also makes it very smooth and easy to blend. The satin finish looks very nice and natural. I hope this photo represents that well. I blended out the top swatch with a fingertip and the bottom swatch is just from a couple swipes of the applicator (the top swatch was completely dry and the bottom one was mostly dry).

Staying power

Since this formula is lightweight and creamy, I think it might be prone to moving around if it’s not set with powder. Since I always set my concealer, I don’t experience that problem with this product. Once it’s set in place, it doesn’t move. That doesn’t include creasing, unfortunately.

If I don’t follow my own tips that I mentioned above (using only a small amount of product and tapping over any creases before setting with a small amount of powder), this concealer settles into the fine lines around my eyes and ages me by at least ten years. On the other hand, if I am careful to follow my own application tips, creasing is minimal. It looks very smooth for the first several hours and honestly doesn’t look bad even at the end of a long day. In this photo, I had been wearing this concealer for about seven hours and it still looked great!

Price

As expected, since Hydrating Camo Concealer is from e.l.f., it is very affordable! It is only $6.00 and that is very low, even if you only compare it to other drugstore concealers. There are some concealers that are a little less expensive than this one, but I doubt that they’re as good! This product checks all my boxes for a good concealer and it is most definitely worth buying.

e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer vs. e.l.f. 16HR Camo Concealer

Before Hydrating Camo Concealer, e.l.f. launched the 16HR Camo Concealer. It has a different formula; it dries down to a matte finish, dries quickly, and is recommended for normal to oily skin types. Since it is matte and quick-drying, the original Camo Concealer may be a better choice for concealing blemishes than the hydrating version. 

If you’re already familiar with the 16HR Camo Concealer formula and are thinking about trying the newer Hydrating Camo Concealer, please keep in mind that the shade names are not equivalent between the two formulas (i.e. Fair Beige in 16HR Camo Concealer is a different shade from Fair Beige in Hydrating Camo Concealer). Make sure you look at shade descriptions and swatches before selecting a shade.

Does e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer live up to e.l.f.’s claims that this product is lightweight, full coverage, hydrating, and long-wearing? I’d say yes to all of those claims except for one. I don’t think this is a full coverage concealer. The coverage is good, but I’d say it’s more of a medium coverage product. The coverage is buildable, however, if you use too much you run the risk of looking cakey or having the product settle into fine lines and wrinkles. For more coverage, I’d recommend pairing this concealer with a color-corrector.

For a long time, I honestly thought I’d never find a concealer that would work for me. I’m so happy to report that I’m enjoying e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer! I think it would be a great choice for anyone looking for a hydrating under-eye concealer. 🙂

Lip balms are a great choice year-around to keep lips soft and moisturized. But what if you want a little color, too? Or a finishing touch on a quick “no fuss” makeup look? Lipsticks aren’t as hydrating as lip balm and they can look too heavy if you’re going for a more casual look. A good compromise is a tinted lip balm, which provides the hydration of a lip balm, with a sheer wash of color to dress up your look a bit.

Not all tinted lip balms provide much, if any, actual color payoff. If you’re looking for one that provides visible color while also providing lots of moisture for juicy lips, look no further than Colourpop Just a Tint lip crayons. These lip crayons look different from a standard lip balm, but they provide just as much moisture. They also offer buildable coverage. You can apply one coat for a sheer wash of color, or add a couple more coats for opaque color.

Colourpop’s Just a Tint lip crayons have been such a big hit, they also released them in several kits which each include two complementary shades. Additionally, I’ve seen at least a couple of influencers collaborate with Colourpop to curate temporary collections of their favorite shades. This is one of Colourpop’s most popular lip products, so I’m excited to be reviewing it!

Shade range

Most tinted lip balms don’t come in very many shades, maybe five or less. Colourpop is all about bringing the color though, and they didn’t disappoint with this shade range. There are 14 shades (16 if you count Chimichanga and Chubby Bunny at Ulta), and I think there is something for every skin tone and preference. There are bold shades like Treasure Island and Cutie Fruity, but there are several nude shades as well. I chose Shaka and City of stars because I thought they would be flattering with my neutral to warm undertone, and also because neither of those shades are very bold. Since this is a slippery formula, I didn’t want to risk having a bold shade come off on my teeth. I prefer matte lipsticks if I want a bold color.

My only complaint with Colourpop’s Just a Tint shade range, is that it’s actually a little bit too big. I think they might’ve been trying too hard. I appreciate their effort, but if you look at some of the nude shades, you’ll find that many of them are very similar, like Rise n Shine and Z Boys. I think that when there are similar shades in a range, that can make it very difficult for customers to choose their best shade. Fortunately, Colourpop provides lip swatches of every shade on three skin tones, so that helps with shade selection.

Packaging/ease of application

Since these tinted lip balms are “lip crayons,” their packaging is different from most tinted lip balms. The packaging is very nice-looking and comfortable to use. It’s much larger than a traditional lip balm with a large transparent cap, and twist-up bottom. I like that Colourpop has the shade names on top of the caps with “buttons” for lack of a better word, but the color of the buttons doesn’t match the actual lip crayon color. Fortunately, the tubes (the main packaging) do match the color of each shade quite well.

These lip crayons come with the product formed in a point, but over time that point wears down. I don’t really mind that much, but some people might want to keep the product sharpened for more precise application. It would’ve been nice if Colourpop had included a sharpener on the end to provide that option. 

As far as actually using this product goes, it applies like a dream! The texture is very smooth. Most lip balms feel waxy (beeswax is often one of the first ingredients) and there is a bit of tugging when they’re applied, but this one has a very different texture. There is no resistance whatsoever and the product feels like it melts on the lips (in a good way).

Hydration

Since the texture of the Colourpop Just a Tint lip crayons is lightweight and smooth, you might think they’re not as hydrating as other lip balms. I’m here to tell you that they are actually very hydrating! They feel wonderfully hydrating upon application and wear down gracefully, but the hydration hangs on for hours.

As you can probably guess, these lip crayons are not transfer-proof and they will wear off faster if you eat or drink while wearing them. I still feel moisture on my lips even after eating a full meal, but to maintain the most hydration, it’s best to reapply after eating. Luckily, they are very easy to apply! The lighter shades wouldn’t even require a mirror for application, especially if you only apply one coat.

Team player

Colourpop Just a Tint lip crayons are versatile lip products. They look great on their own, but they can be dressed up by applying them with a lip liner (I like to use Essence 8H Waterproof Lipliner in the shade “Because Duh;” silly name, but I don’t care because it’s a light brown nude shade that works nicely with both City of Stars and Shaka). These could also be layered over a matte lipstick in a complementary shade, to add some shine. If you want to apply lip gloss over these lip crayons, that’s an option too; just make sure you blot first since the formula is already slick/glossy.

In these photos, I applied a few layers of each shade with the Essence lip liner that I mentioned above. The lip liner adds definition. I really like this look! 🙂

Price

If these were regular old lip balms, I’d say it’s crazy to charge $8.00. Since they’re tinted, hydrate the lips with nice ingredients like marula oil and shea butter, feel wonderful, work well with other products, AND have nice packaging, I think $8.00 is more than fair! These tinted lip balms are superior to others I’ve tried and they are well worth $8.00. Plus, if you get one of the lip kits that include two shades, you save $2.00 since the kits are $14.00. Great deal!

Colourpop did a great job designing and formulating the Just a Tint lip crayons. It’s truly an outstanding product! 

There is one more thing I should note about this product, however. All of the shades have a fruity scent that is very strong. I don’t taste it, but the scent lingers for quite a while. Some people love it, others hate it, and I’m somewhere in the middle. If you don’t like fragrance in your lip products, this one probably isn’t for you. I think nearly everyone else would enjoy these lip crayons!

In last week’s product review on the Róen Beauty 11:11 eyeshadow palette, I went into detail about the “lid illume” formula and why it is perfect for quick and easy eye looks. While I enjoy that palette very much, I recognize that it might not be for everyone. Another option for simple yet beautiful eye looks, is liquid eyeshadow, particularly liquid metallic eyeshadow. Unfortunately, it’s a lot harder to find good liquid eyeshadows compared to powder eyeshadow palettes. There aren’t that many companies that even offer liquid eyeshadows, compared to the vast number that sell eyeshadow palettes.

Until very recently, the only liquid eyeshadow formula I’d tried that I enjoyed, was the Stila Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow. I like everything about Stila’s formula, but there is one big thing that I don’t like about that product: the price. It is $24.00! I saw them on sale for 50% off recently and was tempted to pick up another shade, but I’m glad I didn’t because just a day or two later e.l.f. launched its brand new Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow! I ordered the shades Galaxy and Aurora immediately, hoping that it would be a more affordable alternative to Stila’s product without compromising on quality. 

Keep reading for my thoughts on this product after using it the last four or five days. I usually test products longer before reviewing, but in this case I was too excited to wait!

Packaging/ease of application

The e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows come in clear plastic packaging which makes the shade visible from every side. There is a short doe foot applicator that can be used to apply product directly to the eyelid or you can use a brush to take eyeshadow off of the applicator. 

I use these eyeshadows a couple of different ways. The first method is to apply the product directly to my eyelid with the applicator and blend it out using a brush or my fingertip, working quickly because this formula dries very quickly. I find that when I use a brush, if I’m not extremely careful, there is some fallout. It isn’t too bad if you don’t over-blend. Using a fingertip instead of a brush to blend, seems to prevent fallout. It makes sense because a brush’s bristles move the product around a lot more than a fingertip will. Another thing that makes this method easier, is using a matte eyeshadow with a very similar color, in the crease. That way you won’t need to do as much blending.

I also like to use this liquid eyeshadow as eyeliner. It applies smoothly with a small angled eyeliner brush. I don’t experience any fallout when using this product as eyeliner.

The product description from e.l.f. states that the formula is buildable for day and night. I agree with that; you can apply a very small amount and blend it for lighter coverage or more product can be applied for intense color payoff. You can also add more product once some is already applied to build coverage slowly. If slowly building coverage, it’s important to wait until each layer is fully dried before adding more. Otherwise, eyeshadow lifts off of the eyelid and it can look patchy. I noticed that more with the Aurora shade, which is a little bit trickier overall since it is such a bold shade.

Overall, I’m very happy with the packaging and ease of application of this product. The Aurora shade can sometimes be a bit difficult, but that’s more user error than a problem with the product. However, I will say that if you aren’t very comfortable with bold shades, you will likely prefer the six neutral shades over Aurora or Supernova (unless you want to use them as eyeliner instead of eyeshadow; Aurora makes a gorgeous eyeliner). 

In the photos below, I blended Galaxy all over my eyelid for an easy natural look, and used Aurora as a bold festive eyeliner. These are my preferred methods for each of these shades, but there are a lot of possibilities for these eyeshadows! 

Inclusivity

Usually when I think about inclusivity in relation to makeup, the first thing that comes to mind is “will it work for any skin tone?” Judging by the two shades of e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow that I own, and swatches I’ve seen of the others, I believe this whole range will work for any skin tone. I’m not sure if they’re all opaque with just one swipe, but they can certainly be built up to be fully opaque, and I think that’s important for people with deep skin tones.

In this photo, I did only one swipe of each shade on my arm. If I had blended them out, the pigmentation wouldn’t be as intense, but I wanted to show that they can be quite opaque with only a single swipe of the applicator.

The shades currently offered are beautiful, but I think e.l.f. should add more options. I consider six of the eight shades to be neutral, with only two colorful/bold shades. Blue, silver, gunmetal, and even an icy white shade would be fun additions. I would love to see some duochrome shades too!

Texture

The texture of these eyeshadows is outstanding, and honestly I think they feel identical to the Stila Shimmer & Glow liquid eyeshadows. The e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows have a very pleasant, smooth texture. Some metallic eyeshadows are a bit chunky, but there isn’t any sort of grit with these. All you feel is the gel base, even though metallic pearls are suspended in the formula. That gel is the reason there is little to no fallout with this product! 🙂

Staying power

As I mentioned previously, this product dries down quickly so it is very important to work quickly. Once it sets, it does not budge. Not even a little bit. As the gel dries, it locks the color and shimmer in place. I am extremely impressed with the staying power of this eyeshadow. While it will crease on me eventually if I don’t use an eyeshadow primer, it looks good much longer than a powder eyeshadow would without primer. I will use a primer like my beloved Milani Eyeshadow Primer every time in the future, to get the best wear time possible. I’m in the habit of always using it with eyeshadow anyway since I have oily eyelids.

You might be concerned about the removal of this product since it hangs on to the skin so well. It’s actually surprisingly easy to remove! I never have any issues washing it off and I also don’t see any staining on my skin, even with the green Aurora shade.

Price

This won’t be surprising to anyone, but I am super happy about the price of this product! Only $5.00?!?! Once again, I greatly appreciate e.l.f.’s affordable prices (especially because I’ll probably be buying more shades). I will gladly pay $5.00 instead of $24.00 for Stila’s comparable product! 

The one thing that Stila has over e.l.f. when comparing their liquid metallic eyeshadows, is that e.l.f.’s is 0.1 ounce and Stila’s is slightly larger at 0.153 ounces. I don’t have a problem with the e.l.f. product being smaller, because even though Stila offers about 50% more product, they also charge almost five times the price of e.l.f.’s Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows!

Quick Note about e.l.f. Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow

If you’ve been a fan of e.l.f. products for a while, you may know that they also have a range of liquid glitter eyeshadows. Those are a different formula from the metallic eyeshadows that I just reviewed. I own the Copper Pop shade in the Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow formula, and it is very different from the metallic formula. It is more of a glitter topper, with very little pigment. I vastly prefer the Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows, but the glitter formula remains a popular product that many people enjoy.

It was difficult for me to take any points away from this product in the ratings above, because it is just so good! The quality is really excellent and I will definitely be trying at least one more shade (probably more…). I usually don’t buy multiples of products, so you know it’s good!

I honestly believe the e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows are an excellent choice if you’ve been looking for an affordable alternative to Stila or any of the other more expensive liquid metallic eyeshadows on the market. The quality of these knocks my socks off, especially for $5.00! If you’ve never tried liquid metallic eyeshadows, this is a great opportunity since this product is so affordable and the shades are stunning. 🙂

I very much enjoy applying eyeshadow and using a variety of eyeshadow brushes, but that wasn’t always the case. When I first became interested in makeup, I was intimidated by eyeshadow. I didn’t know which colors went where, what types of brushes I should use, etc. There’s a lot to learn. It’s also time consuming to do an eye look that involves several different shades.

If you are intimidated by eyeshadow, don’t want to buy many eye brushes, don’t have time to do complicated eye looks, simply enjoy a good eyeshadow palette, or any combination of those things, I’ve got a very interesting palette that you may find tempting! The Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette is the most unique eyeshadow palette I’ve ever owned. It’s also the first clean beauty eyeshadow palette I ever purchased. The eyeshadows in this palette are difficult to describe, as they are not powder or cream eyeshadows (though they’re closer to a cream formula); Róen refers to them as “lid illumes.” Three of the four shades are shimmers and the fourth is a beautiful glitter topper.

I bought this Róen palette as a birthday gift for myself earlier this year. At the time, I didn’t have time for eyeshadow very often and I missed it. The 11:11 palette appealed to me because it is designed for all shades to be easily and quickly applied with fingers and I thought it might be a good option for me to work eyeshadow back into my quick morning makeup routine. It did not disappoint!

Róen Beauty just launched in 2019, so many of you may not be familiar with this company. I only heard about the brand last spring from one of my favorite YouTubers. Róen is a clean beauty brand that creates innovative high-performance luxury products. Inclusivity

The shades in this palette are perfect for everyday wear, but far from boring since they add sparkle to any eye look. They are neutrals that would be approachable to almost anyone. They’re also quite versatile to fit individual preferences and skin tones. For example, you can go in with a very light layer for a light wash of color, or build it up for a more saturated glamorous look.

Róen recommends using a brush to apply a diffused wash of color, or using a fingertip for more pigmentation. I’ve tried applying these eyeshadows with a brush before and it didn’t work for me at all. I think a fingertip will work better for this product every time. You can still get that light wash of color if that’s what you prefer. The color can be blended out easily and won’t look overly pigmented unless you add more product.

I built up the color in the eye swatches below to show that the colors translate quite well from the pan to the eyes.

Texture

These eyeshadows have the most unique texture I’ve ever experienced, so I think it’s appropriate that Róen gave them a special name, “lid illumes.” I’ve never used another product that compares to these, but the closest thing would probably be the Colourpop super shock eyeshadows which are a creamy texture that applies best with a fingertip. These “lid illumes” are more firm than those are, however.

There are two textures in this palette. Hashtag, Ciao!, and Rosie are firm but smooth, and respond well to the heat from fingertips, becoming more creamy. That’s another reason I prefer to apply these with fingertips. Situation is different from the other three shades. It is flaky with chunks of glitter and not nearly as easy to work with as the others. Fortunately, Situation is more of a topper and it works just fine for that purpose.

One big plus with this formula is that there is little to no fallout! I don’t think I have ever experienced fallout from Hashtag, Ciao!, or Rosie. Fallout can be a problem with Situation, especially if you’re trying to pick up enough to use it as the only eyeshadow, like I did in the top right in the graphic above. I don’t normally experience fallout when I carefully apply Situation as a topper, and that is usually the way I use it.

Pigmentation

None of the shades in this palette are ultra-pigmented. However, I think that’s a good thing since this palette is meant to give the user options to keep the eye look subtle or build it up to be more colorful. I am very happy with the pigmentation of these shades. Some liquid or cream eyeshadows that have shimmer come off as shimmer with no color, but these provide as little or as much color payoff as you want.

Staying power

One drawback of many liquid and cream eyeshadows is that they crease. Unfortunately, Róen’s formula also creases. Eyeshadow primer is an absolute must with this palette if creasing bothers you. I find that eyeshadow primer delays and minimizes the creasing, but it does still happen for me most days. The good news is that if you experience creasing with these “lid illumes,” it’s easy to tap back over your eyelid and it blends back together again.

Other than creasing, the staying power of these eyeshadows is excellent. They never smudge or fade. In fact, I had a hard time removing the swatches I did for this post! At a certain point I called it “good enough” and left my arm looking a bit stained from the three pigmented shades. I’ve never noticed staining on my eyelids, but that’s probably because I use eyeshadow primer.

Price

Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette is a luxury product and it is certainly priced as such. It is $42.00 for four shades which means that each shade is a whopping $10.50! The pans are not very large either, so this price tag is quite high. It’s safe to say that this isn’t the best choice if you’re shopping on a budget. That being said, I recognize that luxury items come at a high price, and for good reason (in this case, anyway). Róen is doing a lot of things right as far as using clean ingredients, practicing high ethical standards, and using sustainable recyclable packaging. The product itself is very interesting and unique, and the palette design is sleek and beautiful. You can’t find anything like this from any other brand that I’m aware of. 

Other Róen palettes

If you’re interested in Róen’s formula, but you aren’t loving the shades in the 11:11 palette, there are a couple of other options that are the same size and price. The 75° Warm Eyeshadow Palette includes gold, warm taupe, dark brown, and terracotta. There is an option for those that prefer cool tones as well; the 52° Cool Eyeshadow Palette includes rose gold, purple, taupe/gray, and gunmetal. I don’t own either of those palettes, but they look beautiful!

I’m really glad I ordered the Róen Beauty 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette when I did, because I’ve very much enjoyed using it! I don’t use it nearly as often now that I have more time to do full eye looks using powder eyeshadow palettes, but I still use it from time to time and love the simple yet beautiful eye looks I create with it. It’s so easy to pull it out and use one or two shades to look a little more “put together.”

While this palette is quite pricey, I think it’s a good product to consider for anyone that loves eyeshadow but has a hard time finding time for it. These “lid illumes” can be applied in just a couple of minutes!

The two coverage products that I have previously reviewed are Colourpop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Acid Tinted Moisturizer and Colourpop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation. These are both hydrating products that provide a natural skin-like finish. I think both Colourpop products work well for combination and oily skin, but many people with those skin types look for foundations with a matte finish. Matte foundations are usually the most long-wearing, especially for people that produce excess oils, and they provide a soft airbrushed look to the skin. It’s no surprise that matte foundations are appealing to many.

Since I’m a makeup enthusiast, I like to have a variety of textures and finishes in my foundation collection. When Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation was released and touted as a dupe for Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, I knew I had to try it (this Fenty foundation is very popular, but Fenty hasn’t responded to some questions about animal testing and the product costs $35.00). Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation is meant to be a lightweight high coverage natural-finish foundation, but it looks very matte to me. The front of the bottle even has “mattifying” printed on it. Some matte foundations are very heavy, and the light texture of this one appealed to me. I don’t like feeling like I’m wearing a mask when I wear foundation.

Catrice is a very affordable drugstore brand. Many of their products are highly rated, but for some reason I don’t hear much about the brand. Catrice is best-known for complexion products, so I was very excited to try their HD Liquid Coverage Foundation.

Inclusivity

When Catrice first launched this foundation, the shade range was abysmal…maybe only ten shades. A high coverage foundation like this one really needs to have a large shade range since the shades are far from flexible. 

I bought this foundation when the shade range was still quite small, so the shade I have (010 Light Beige) is actually a little dark for my fair skin tone. There are now three shades available that are lighter than Light Beige. The full range consists of 26 shades that range from 002 Porcelain to 098 Deep Mocha.

While I appreciate that Catrice added more fair and light shades, I think they should’ve added more deep shades as well. The majority of the range seems to consist of light and medium shades. This is subjective since Catrice doesn’t include shade descriptions, but I would only call five of the shades deep or dark. Another problem is that the deepest shade in the range doesn’t appear to be dark enough for the deepest skin tones. This seems to be somewhat common and it isn’t right.

While I’m very glad that Catrice expanded this foundation’s shade range, they really need to add even more shades. So many brands now are doing a great job with inclusive shade ranges, I think it would be wise for Catrice to do the same. For comparison purposes, Colourpop has a very inclusive wide shade range that includes 42 shades in their Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation. Colourpop, can you give Catrice some pointers, please? 😉

Packaging/ease of application

Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation has unique packaging. Instead of a pump or squeeze tube, this foundation is packaged in a glass bottle with a dropper. The dropper works well to dispense the product since it is such a lightweight liquid formula. 

I like that with the dropper, you can either dispense the foundation directly on your skin, or drop the amount you need on your hand or another surface like the e.l.f. Artist Mixing Palette. I prefer to dispense the product onto the mixing palette instead of directly on my skin because I think that method prevents you from accidentally applying too much.

This foundation is easy to quickly blend out on the skin. The only caveat here is that since this foundation is so lightweight and liquid, it does dry quickly and therefore you need to work quickly. That also means that you wouldn’t want to try to build more coverage with this foundation. You can use a little for medium coverage or more for full coverage, but don’t try to build it up once you’ve applied it to your whole face. 

In this photo, the foundation was freshly applied (the only other product on my face was powder). I applied it to the left side of my face (right side in photo) with a sponge and the right side (left side in photo) with a foundation brush. I really didn’t see a difference from one side to the other, so I think it’s fine to use the tool that you’re most comfortable with.

Hydration

If you are looking for a hydrating foundation, this one is not for you. I wouldn’t say that it’s drying, but it also is not hydrating at all in my opinion. This may be a problem for people with dry skin, but for others, I think it’s probably fine as long as you use a good moisturizer before applying the foundation. 

I looked through the ingredient list and the only ingredient that jumped out at me as a hydrator was glycerin, and it was almost halfway down the list. 

I tried adding a drop of e.l.f. All The Feels Facial Oil a couple of times since some foundations mix well with oils to make them more hydrating. Unfortunately, it did not work. I didn’t notice much difference in how the foundation felt on my skin, but I did notice that it broke apart more quickly.

Staying power

I think the wear time, or time that this makeup looks good, will vary greatly from person to person. That’s because this foundation has a tendency to settle into fine lines very quickly and “crack” in any other places that you might move your face. It’s not obvious from a distance when this foundation settles into my fine lines, but I think someone with more mature skin and deeper wrinkles, might be unhappy with the way it looks on their skin.

On the other hand, I’ve found that this foundation does wear very well on my cheeks where I don’t have any fine lines. It also wears surprisingly well under a mask. It’s important to note here that I do always powder my face, and also usually use a setting spray. It might rub off quickly under a mask without the help of those other products.

I did an 8-hour wear test with this foundation yesterday. I finished applying all of my makeup at 11:00 a.m. and you can see that it looked very nice at that time. However, after only a couple of hours I could see it settling into all my fine lines, especially on my forehead. Some of the foundation also came off around my nose because it was running (thanks, fall allergies) and I had to wipe it with a tissue. I took the 3:00 and 7:00 photos without smiling to try to make the breakdown around my fine lines more visible. There was very little difference from 3:00 to 7:00, and other than the “problem areas” (fine lines), it still looked pretty nice at 7:00.

Price

There are only a few cruelty-free brands at the drugstore that can beat the price of this foundation. I think $11.00 is very fair considering the nice packaging. A little goes a long way, so a bottle of this will last a very long time. If you think this foundation would work well on your skin tone and skin type, definitely don’t hesitate to spend the $11.00!

While Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation is not perfect, I don’t think it’s a bad product. The packaging is nice and the formula provides good coverage that’s comfortable to wear all day (though it definitely wouldn’t last 24 hours like Catrice claims).

Before buying this foundation, remember that it isn’t ideal for everyone. Make sure there is a good shade match available, consider your skin type, and also think about any fine lines and wrinkles you may have. I’d like to note here that I usually don’t use a primer. If you have fine lines and use a primer that does a good job of filling them in, this foundation may work very well for you!
