e.l.f. No Budge Shadow Stick–One and Done Eyeshadow

As a makeup enthusiast, I enjoy using all kinds of eyeshadow. However, not everyone is comfortable using traditional powder eyeshadows. Cream eyeshadows are a great alternative for adding color to the eyes because they don’t require very much time or skill to apply. Additionally, they can be used alone as a one and done eyeshadow or combined with powder eyeshadows to create a full eye look.

I’d been wanting to try cream eyeshadow for a long time, but most of them I found were out of my price range. I had my eye on the e.l.f. No Budge Shadow Sticks for the last several months since e.l.f. is so affordable, but I was skeptical about their qualityNo Budge Shadow Stick because I hadn’t heard any reviews. I’ve enjoyed most e.l.f. products I’ve tried, so I’m not sure why I was so resistant! Once e.l.f. expanded the shade range for its No Budge Shadow Sticks, I started seeing a lot of reviews which were mixed, and knew it was time to give this product a go.

I ordered two No Budge Shadow Sticks in the shades Rose Gold and Magnetic Pull. Keep reading for my full product review, complete with swatches!

Packaging

E.l.f. No Budge Shadow Sticks have a twist up design, and can be sharpened with the built-in sharpener shown in this photo. I think it’s brilliant that e.l.f. includes a sharpener in this product’s design. It’s easiest to apply this cream eyeshadow to small areas like the inner corner or lower lash line if it’s at least a little bit sharpened.

No Budge Shadow Sticks have been around for quite some time now and used to look very different. The packaging was updated when e.l.f. added more shades last year. Now, the packaging for each shade matches the color of the product inside.

While the packaging is plastic, it feels reasonably sturdy and the cap snaps in place securely. These shadow sticks would be ideal for travel because the packaging protects the product effectively. Also, the compact size makes these very handy to toss in just about any bag whether it’s a clutch or a duffel bag.

Ease of application

The texture of the e.l.f. No Budge Shadow Sticks is very smooth and creamy. They glide over the skin easily so there’s little to no tugging of that delicate skin around the eyes. My favorite thing about these is how quickly you can swipe them on and blend the edges for an effortless eye look.

These shadow sticks can be used a couple of different ways. They can be used for “one and done” eye looks or they can be used in combination with other eyeshadows. I prefer using them alone, but both methods have their merits.

In the photo on the left below, I used a couple of deeper powder eyeshadows in and above the crease, and used the Rose Gold No Budge Shadow Stick on my eyelids. In the photo on the right, I used Magnetic Pull on my eyelids and blended the color up into my crease with a brush. I find that when I blend these, it’s easy to blend the color away so sometimes more product needs to be applied. This formula is very easy to blend, but it’s important not to wait too long to blend because it will set.

Inclusivity

I don’t know that every shade of the No Budge Shadow Sticks would work for every skin tone, but I think there are at least a couple of shades for everyone. Some of the shades seem to be much more pigmented than others.

For example, the shades Rich Amethyst and Midnight Sapphire seem to be the most pigmented and they’re the boldest shades. Those would look gorgeous on deep skin tones. Conversely, Rose Quartz and Champagne Crystal don’t appear to be nearly as pigmented and would probably look best on fair to light skin tones. I might be off-base on those shade assessments since I haven’t actually tried those particular shades myself, but I do feel confident that there are shades that will work for every skin tone.

My two shades, Rose Gold and Magnetic Pull, seem to be somewhere in the middle of the pigmentation spectrum and would probably work for a lot of different skin tones. In these swatches, I built up the product to maximum opacity. On the eyes, these shades provide a sheer wash of color once they are blended.

As far as the variety of unique shades, I think e.l.f. has done a very good job of providing several options. I am a little bit confused about why there are three shades that are so similar (Perfect Pearl, Champagne Crystal, and Ice Créme), but that’s my one and only complaint about this shade range. If e.l.f. would ever choose to expand the shade range again, I think it might be nice if they added silver and emerald shades.

Staying power

E.l.f. claims that the No Budge Shadow Stick formula is smudge-proof, long-wearing and crease-resistant. I wish I could say that I agree with that assessment, but I don’t. It is smudge proof once it sets, but it isn’t long-wearing or crease-resistant. This rating category is a complicated one because there are caveats here to take into consideration.

First off, I don’t think the formula is consistent across all 14 shades. Some appear to have more shimmer than others. Of the two shades I have, Rose Gold has more shimmer than Magnetic Pull. I’m bringing this up because each of the shades wear differently on me throughout the day and there may be some variation among the other shades as well.

Rose Gold doesn’t last very well at all, unless it’s worn in conjunction with powder eyeshadow (see above example under “ease of application”). If it is worn alone, it creases and wears away within only a few hours. I have oily eyelids that are also hooded, so it may hold up better for those with normal eyelids.

Magnetic Pull performs much better. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the lesser amount of shimmer in that shade or if it’s something else. This shade doesn’t crease or fade as noticeably as the Rose Gold does. It doesn’t hold up quite as well as I’d like, but I have high expectations. I think it wears well enough to be worn on an average day (at least six hours, possibly more).

The good news here is that it’s very easy to touch-up with these shadow sticks once the color starts to fade or crease. Swipe on a little more product and blending may not even be necessary for it to look “good as new.”

Those of you that have read some of my other product reviews may be wondering why I didn’t mention eyeshadow primer. I always use Milani Eyeshadow Primer to prevent powder and liquid eyeshadows from creasing and fading. Unfortunately, I discovered that it doesn’t make much difference in wear time with these No Budge Shadow Sticks. I think it might make the color show up a little better on my eyelids, but it doesn’t seem to help with longevity.

Price

E.l.f. No Budge Shadow Sticks are priced at only $5.00! It’s common for e.l.f. products to be some of the most affordable, but in this case I didn’t find a single shadow stick from any brand offered at a lower price. Most of the shadow sticks I found were from high-end brands that charge quadruple (or more) the price of e.l.f.’s No Budge Shadow Sticks.

Also, these and other shadow sticks don’t include very much product, so I’m especially glad that e.l.f. offers them at such an affordable price. This is the kind of product that would need to be replaced often if used daily. Thanks e.l.f., for staying true to your roots and keeping prices so low! 🙂

When I ordered these e.l.f. No Budge Shadow Sticks, I had high hopes for the formula based on the product name. While they aren’t as long-wearing as I’d like, they are creamy, easy to apply, have convenient packaging, and are priced very reasonably! I’ve enjoyed using these in a variety of ways including as eyeliner (Magnetic Pull) and inner-corner highlight (Rose Gold).

If this is a product that sounds interesting to you, I think you should give it a try even if you’re concerned about the wear-time. A lot of reviews I’ve read from others state that these are long-wearing for them, so it’s hard to say how they’ll last on any particular person. At $5.00 each, you really can’t go wrong!

I may try a couple other shades at some point in the future. I’ve got my eye on Bronze Metal as an everyday neutral and Blue Steel because it’s such a fun unique shade.

Have you tried any of the e.l.f. No Budge Shadow Sticks or shadow sticks from other brands? What kind of experiences have you had with this type of product’s longevity? I hope to hear from you, as shadow sticks seem to wear so differently from person to person.

Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream–No-Fuss Moisturizer to Hydrate and Calm Skin

One of my favorite types of skincare products to hydrate and calm my combination skin every morning, is a gel or gel-cream moisturizer. Those types of formulas tend to have a very lightweight and refreshing feel on the skin. The last gel moisturizer I used was Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Invisible Finish Moisture Gel, and while I enjoyed that product and would recommend it, I’ve found another morning moisturizer that I like even better! Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream is my new moisturizer that I apply every single morning.

Versed Dew PointAccording to Versed, the Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream is appropriate for all skin types. I used to have quite oily skin and now it is combination, so I can’t speak for dry skin types, but this moisturizer and similar formulas are fantastic for combination and oily skin types because they aren’t greasy. At the same time, they are generally still plenty hydrating for normal to oily skin types.

Please keep reading for a full review of Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream, which has become one of my favorite lightweight moisturizers!

Versed Dew Point product claims directly from VersedSkin.com

If you want to keep your skin hydrated but don’t like the feel of traditional cream textures, meet your new moisturizer match. The lightweight gel-cream formula with a jelly-like texture absorbs instantly and disappears into your skin, leaving it feeling refreshed, never greasy. Basically, it’s ideal for those warmer months when heavier moisturizers tend to weigh you down—or simply if you deal with oily, breakout-prone skin 365 days a year. Sodium hyaluronate (like hyaluronic acid it helps draw in and retain moisture in skin) and aloe leaf juice hydrate while natural antioxidants found in green tea soothe skin, fight damaging free radicals, and quiet inflammation.

Please note that I am not a skincare professional. I am simply an individual that enjoys learning about and using skincare products. Speak to your dermatologist or esthetician if you have any concerns.

Packaging/ease of application

Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream is packaged in a plastic squeeze tube with a twist-off cap. Like all Versed products, it has a simple yet sophisticated look. I like it when lightweight moisturizers like this one are packaged in squeeze tubes because the ingredients are protected better than they would be in a jar and it’s easy to squeeze out exactly how much product is needed. Thicker formulas don’t always work as well in squeeze tubes, but for this type of product, I think this packaging is perfect. I also appreciate that the packaging is recyclable.

This moisturizer is definitely what I’d call “no-fuss” because it’s so easy to apply. The formula’s texture is accurately described in the product description above. It is a very lightweight gel-cream that smooths easily over the skin and absorbs quickly. No greasy residue is left behind after this moisturizer is applied, whether I use just a small amount or a little extra on days that I feel like I need extra hydration.

Hydration

I am skeptical of the claim that Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream is appropriate for all skin types (according to the packaging). I think the product description copied from VersedSkin.com is more on the mark. While this product is plenty hydrating for combination and oily skin, and probably for normal skin types as well, I’m not sure that it would be quite hydrating enough for those with dry skin. However, during warmer or more humid months, this Versed gel-cream may be sufficient even for dry skin. Most people, even those with dry skin, don’t need heavy moisturizers in a humid environment.

Since this product has “gel-cream” in the name, and Versed is transparent about what the product is, I didn’t hesitate to give it 10/10 for hydration. As someone with combination skin, I am very pleased with the amount of hydration this moisturizer provides. My skin drinks it right up and feels very soft and supple after I apply this product every morning. Those with dry skin will likely know to choose a heavier moisturizer than this one, especially during dry months.

Team player

It’s very important for morning skincare products to be good “team players” and layer well since makeup is often applied on top. Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream can be used AM and/or PM, but I only use it in the mornings so that is the perspective I’m writing from in regards to layering. I prefer to use a heavier moisturizer at night.

As I mentioned previously, this moisturizer is lightweight and absorbs into the skin very quickly…within seconds actually! That is one important characteristic I look for in moisturizers that I plan to use in the mornings because products that absorb quickly usually layer very well. This Versed moisturizer layers easily over products like toner and serum to lock in all those skin-loving skincare ingredients without leaving the skin feeling greasy. Sunscreen applies well on top, without any need to wait in between steps. This moisturizer is a fantastic team player that never interferes with other products’ performance, except perhaps to make some products work even better! 🙂

Ingredients

One of the things Versed prides itself on most, is high standards for ingredients used in each of its formulations. Versed products are formulated based on the EU’s safe ingredient standards, which means there are 1,300+ potentially unsafe ingredients that Versed will never use. On that note, here is the full ingredient list for Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream:

Water, Glycerin, Propylene glycol, Squalane, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, 1,2-hexanediol, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Polyacrylamide, Triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil, C13-14 isoparaffin, Sodium hydroxide, Sambucus nigra (elderberry) flower extract, Laureth-7, Trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate, Sodium hyaluronate, Potassium sorbate, Sodium benzoate, Citric acid

This ingredient list may look long, but it actually contains 21 ingredients which is on the low side for most moisturizers. Eight of these ingredients stand out as excellent skin-loving ingredients (please note that my primary resources for ingredient information are INCI Decoder and Paula’s Choice Ingredient Dictionary)!:

  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Propylene glycol
    • Humectant (draws moisture into the skin)
    • Helps active ingredients to penetrate the skin
  • Squalane
    • Moisturizer found naturally in certain fish, plants, and human skin
  • Aloe barbadensis leaf juice
    • Moisturizer
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil
    • Wax ester that stays on the skin surface to moisturize and make skin soft
  • Sambucus nigra (elderberry) flower extract
    • Potent antioxidant
    • Hydrates and soothes skin
  • Sodium hyaluronate
    • Sodium form of hyaluronic acid
    • Humectant (draws moisture into the skin)

Almost all of these eight ingredients function to keep the skin hydrated. That’s great to see, because even oilier skin types need plenty of moisture. I’m impressed that Versed was able to incorporate so many hydrators without this product feeling greasy. I always like to mention the position of these types of ingredients within the ingredient list since that indicates the concentration. The first six of these skin-loving ingredients are in the top seven, which means they have reasonably high concentrations and are definitely going to provide benefits to the skin. Sambucus nigra (elderberry) flower extract and sodium hyaluronate are further down the list, but still good to see included.

The other 13 ingredients in this product are a mixed bag of “neutral” ingredients like solvents, thickeners, preservatives, and pH adjusters. They are all completely safe and used to support the overall efficacy of the product.

This is where I would normally describe any “bad” potentially unsafe ingredients, but fortunately there isn’t a single one in this moisturizer! This formula is a simple one, yet effective. I’m very happy with the ingredients used in this product.

Price

Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream is $14.99 ($7.50/oz.), which is consistent with the pricing of other Versed products. I think $14.99 is very reasonable for this moisturizer, especially since I had a hard time coming up with a single negative thing to say about it! The texture is amazing, it applies like a dream, plays well with other products, keeps my skin perfectly hydrated, and contains really good ingredients without any bad stuff!

Looking at similar products, this moisturizer is not the least expensive but it is on the lower end. Considering all the good qualities of Versed Dew Point and how the price compares with most of its competition, I think $14.99 is a steal!

I’d had my eye on Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream since I first heard about it several months ago. I’m so glad I received it as a Christmas gift so I could finally try it! I’ve really enjoyed using this moisturizer as part of my morning skincare routine. It’s so refreshing and easy to use; it’s really one of those products that’s just about foolproof.

I would highly recommend this gel-cream moisturizer to anyone looking for a lightweight product that still provides plenty of hydration. With the possible exception of those with dry skin, I think almost everyone would enjoy this product! It’s nice not to have any other caveats here since there aren’t any common irritants like fragrance used in this formula.

Do you prefer to use a lightweight moisturizer like this one in the mornings, or do you use something heavier? Let me know in the comments!

e.l.f. Putty Blush–Cream to Powder Blush for a Beautifully Flushed Complexion

e.l.f. Putty BlushAs I’ve mentioned in previous posts, blush is one of my favorite makeup products. I love the way it brightens my complexion and makes my skin look healthy. Almost all of the blushes I’ve tried through the years have been powder blushes because cream blushes usually intimidate me.  A very popular new cream blush launched last year called e.l.f. Putty Blush. I was on the fence about trying it for a while, but since e.l.f. products are so affordable, I decided to go for it and see what all the fuss is about.

E.l.f. Putty Blush is the most recent addition to the “Putty” collection, which started with the Poreless Putty Primer and now includes two other face primers, an eye primer, and special brushes. The Poreless Putty Primer and Luminous Putty Primer didn’t work well on my skin, but I still had high hopes for the Putty Blush formula. I’ve now been using the Putty Blush for a little over a month. Read on for my full product review!

e.l.f. Putty Blush product claims directly from ElfCosmetics.com

Say hello to that island glow! This lightweight but buildable, putty to powder blush, blends seamlessly into skin. Infused with argan oil and vitamin E for some added nourishment, this silky smooth, buildable formula will give you a flushed-from-within glow. Highly pigmented, creamy formula melts into skin for a natural glow. Perfect for on the go.

Please note that I am not a makeup artist. The opinions expressed in this review are my own, as a regular person that loves makeup.

Inclusivity

This blush is quite sheer in the shade that I have, Tahiti (swatched in this photo; this is about three layers to show the color built up), so I was originally concerned that the Putty Blushes might not work for all skin tones. However, after seeing swatches for all eight shades, I think there are options for every skin tone.

If you click the link after “where to buy” above, that will take you to the Putty Blush page which includes a photo of every shade swatched on light, medium, and dark skin tones. The product description states that these blushes are highly pigmented, but that isn’t true for most of these shades. Most of them are quite sheer, but the formula is buildable. The shades that have more pigmentation and may be better suited to deep skin tones, are Bali, Caribbean, and Maldives.

While this shade range isn’t as expansive as some I’ve seen, like that of e.l.f. Primer Infused Blush which comes in 13 shades, there’s still a good variety. If one wanted a unique customized shade, I think some of the Putty Blush shades would mix together nicely on the cheeks.

I’m curious to see if e.l.f. will launch any additional Putty Blush shades in the future. I’m happy with the shade range as-is, but e.l.f. is always looking to please its customers by bringing more options to the table. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen cream blushes with shimmer, but I think it would be interesting if e.l.f. added some shades with shimmer!

Packaging/ease of application

E.l.f. Putty Blushes are packaged in clear plastic jars with twist-off lids. The packaging is very sleek, simple, and easy to open/close, but there is one unusual thing to note. A lot of people have a hard time finding the shade name on the packaging, which is frustrating for those that have more than one shade. E.l.f. does a lot of things well, but labelling products clearly is not one of them. Instead of the shade name being printed on the lid or the bottom of the jar, you can find the shade name printed on a clear label that is on the side of the jar. It’s very easy to overlook if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

The blush itself is quite easy to apply. My preferred application method is to tap this blush on my cheeks with my fingers and then use a brush to blend it out. My favorite brush to use with this blush is the e.l.f. Small Stipple Brush which I featured in another recent blog post, Vegan Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes Part 2–Cheek Brushes. A brush that may work even better is a new launch: the e.l.f. Putty Blush Brush. I don’t own that brush (though I am tempted to pick one up the next time I place an order with e.l.f.!), but it does look like the type of brush that would work well to apply cream blush.

Alternatively, this blush can be applied and blended with fingers alone. That option makes this blush a great choice for travel; it can be applied anytime anywhere, no tools necessary (it just depends on personal preference). The packaging is very small too, so it’s easy to toss in a purse or small makeup bag.

The reason I took a few points away from this category is that this blush doesn’t play nicely with foundations. I’ve watched reviews of this product from several YouTubers that I follow, and most of them didn’t have this problem, so it might be more of a user error. However, in my experience, I am unable to apply this blush over foundation without it removing some of my foundation. That makes it look splotchy and awkward.

After trying this blush with some different foundations, I came to the conclusion that going forward I will only use it on “no makeup makeup days” or days that I simply don’t want to wear foundation. Now, I apply it over my Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Sunscreen Lotion, and it works very well! It applies evenly and gives my skin the most beautiful natural looking flush, or “flushed-from-within glow” as e.l.f. phrased it in the description.

Texture

I’ve only tried a few cream blush formulas, but this one is the most unique of the bunch. It’s creamy, but not as emollient as others I’ve tried. When I dip into it with my fingers, it feels very similar to a potted lip balm (in a good way…it’s not greasy!). As soon as I start to tap the blush onto my cheeks, it no longer feels like a cream, and instead it becomes a powder. It’s like magic!

I know there are other cream-to-powder products out there, but this is my first experience with one and I think it’s brilliant! Also, as someone with combination skin, I appreciate that this blush doesn’t remain creamy. The semi-matte powder finish of this blush helps with longevity and never looks powdery. Instead, the blush melds with the skin to look very natural.

Staying power

Cream blushes are popular for many reasons, but they are generally known to have poor staying power. I’m not sure if it’s because of the Putty Blush cream-to-powder texture, or something else, but this blush actually lasts very well on the skin!

I did a 6-hour wear test to see just how well it would hold up, and I was not disappointed! As you can see, the blush didn’t wear away at all during this wear test. The longevity of this blush is not quite as strong as the e.l.f. Primer Infused Blush, but it definitely hangs on just fine through a typical day. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed any fading until I hit the ten or twelve hour mark wearing this blush.

I’m not sure if the staying power would be quite as good if this blush was applied over a foundation, but I think it would last quite a while with a light dusting of setting powder on top (I never set it with any sort of powder when I wear it without foundation).

Price

Like nearly every e.l.f. product, Putty Blush is quite the bargain at $6.00! This is one of the most affordable cream blushes I’ve come across. E.l.f. also makes a multi stick that can be used as a cream blush and it’s only $4.00, but its ratings aren’t as good as those for Putty Blush (I’ve never tried the e.l.f. multi stick so I’m not sure how it compares). I’ll stick with this product that I know is good. 🙂

In my research for this post, I found a lot of other cream blushes and many of them are quite expensive; some are $40+ and I think that’s kind of crazy! Even if they have spectacular performance, I’m not sure I could justify that price tag for a cream blush. While there is the issue of Putty Blush not interacting well with foundations, I’m very happy to pay $6.00 for this product.

I acknowledge that e.l.f. Putty Blush is not the perfect cream blush, but it is a product that I enjoy and will continue to use regularly. I’ve considered purchasing additional shades, but I’m not sure if I will because I love how natural the Tahiti shade looks on my skin. It’s a really nice neutral, approachable shade that would look good on most people.

I would definitely recommend e.l.f. Putty Blush to anyone that likes to skip foundation, but still wear some makeup. It’s nearly effortless to apply and looks so natural. I think this blush is also worth trying if you do wear foundation every day. It seems that I’m in the minority of people that can’t seem to make it work with foundation, so there’s a good chance that I’m doing something wrong or it could even be something about my skin.

I’m really curious to find out if e.l.f. is going to launch any additional products in the “putty” line. They may add more shades of Putty Blush at some point and it seems likely that they will also add a Putty Bronzer someday. I’ve never used a cream bronzer, but I’d definitely have to try it if e.l.f. makes one!

Have you tried e.l.f. Putty Blush, or any other types of cream blush? Do you have any problems making cream blush work with foundation? If not, do you have any special tips and tricks for me to try? Please leave any comments or advice below! 🙂

Mane Club Hair Masks for Your Best Quarantine Hair

Since the pandemic really started to hit my state hard back in March of last year, my family and I have made an effort to stay home as much as possible. That means no eating in restaurants, no going shopping for fun, and no hair cuts… It’s been thirteen months since I last had my hair trimmed, and my hair started to look damaged months ago. I try to take good care of my hair by not using any hot tools and not washing my hair every single day, but split ends are inevitable eventually. I’ve been using Eva NYC Mane Magic 10-in-1 Primer and Mane Club One Hit Wonder which are both leave-in sprays. They help some, but not as much as a deeply conditioning hair mask. I started using a couple of Mane Club hair masks a few weeks ago, and my hair now looks better than it has in several months!

Mane Club Hair Masks

Mane Club hair masks

Mane Club currently offers six different hair masks with unique functions:

  • Babe Alert: Smoothing
  • Bad Attitude: Volumizing
  • Cha Ching: Moisturizing
  • Cry Baby: Repairing
  • Expert Procrastinator: Frizz-control
  • Wild Thang: Strengthening

Mane Club kindly offered to send me some products to try a couple of months ago and I thought the Cha Ching and Cry Baby hair masks would be most beneficial for my “quarantine hair.” Now I kind of regret not requesting the Wild Thang mask as well, but I may order it to try in the future!

All of the Mane Club hair masks come in 1.8 ounce packets which are meant to provide enough product for 2-3 uses. I only use hair masks on my hair from my ears down, so I’m able to stretch these to about six uses. That’s great since I’ve been using them in place of conditioner. Mane Club hair masks are also vegan, cruelty-free, and don’t contain sulfates, parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, gluten, or drying alcohol.

A brief review of Mane Club Cry Baby and Cha Ching hair masks

These hair masks are like “conditioner on steroids.” They are both deeply nourishing to the hair and feel buttery smooth when they wash out, making it very easy to work out any tangles.

When using the Cry Baby repairing hair mask, I noticed that my hair felt softer and stronger (more resistant to breakage). It’s not actually possible to “repair” hair, so I wasn’t surprised to see that my split ends were still visible. The Cha Ching moisturizing hair mask is my favorite of the two. With that one, my hair feels soft and looks smoother and healthier. Neither of these masks leave my hair feeling like it’s weighed down by any residual product.

I used the Cha Ching hair mask the night before this photo was taken (I didn’t use any other products on my hair after the hair mask was rinsed out). That was a really good hair day, thanks to Mane Club!

I’m going to further discuss each of these hair masks individually, but I will be focusing primarily on ingredients since these two products are similar in texture. Also, I don’t have much more to add about how they perform, beyond the info in the previous paragraph. I hope you will find the remainder of this post interesting; I always learn new things when reviewing ingredients because they help us understand how products work!

Mane Club Cry Baby repairing hair mask

  • Price: $3.00
  • Where to buy: ManeClubNYC.com
    • Mane Club ships internationally
  • Scent: Citrus
  • Product claims on ManeClubNYC.com:
    • Repairs
    • Reduces breakage
    • Deeply conditions

Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Euterpe oleracea (acai) fruit extract, Carica papaya (papaya) fruit extract, Garcinia mangostana (mangosteen) seed oil, Hydrolyzed rice protein, Glycerin, Distearyldimonium chloride, Isopropyl palmitate, Leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Butylene glycol, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl glycol, Sodium PCA, Benzyl alcohol, Potassium sorbate, Sodium benzoate, Sodium hydroxide, Hexylene glycol, Citric acid, Parfum/Fragrance, Benzyl benzoate, Benzyl salicylate, Hexyl cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool

I had never reviewed any conditioners or hair masks previously, so it was really interesting looking up all the ingredients in this hair mask to see what makes it work. There are 29 total ingredients in the Cry Baby hair mask. Most of those are “neutral” ingredients that support the product, but there are also several really good ingredients that are beneficial to the hair, as well as some ingredients that would be better avoided. Let’s start with those good ingredients that hair loves!:

  • Acai fruit extract
    • Potent source of antioxidants
    • Amino acids strengthen hair
    • Coats hair to add moisture, decrease frizz, and add shine
  • Papaya fruit extract
    • Natural hair conditioner
    • Makes hair softer and smoother
    • Rich in vitamin C (antioxidant)
  • Mangosteen seed oil
    • Hydrates and conditions hair
  • Hydrolyzed rice protein
    • Strengthens hair
    • Volumizes
    • Adds shine
  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Distearyldimonium chloride
    • Conditions hair
    • Anti-static
  • Sodium PCA
    • Increases hair volume and shine
    • Improves texture of damaged hair

These are all ingredients that I’m very happy to see in this hair mask! What makes these even better is that all except the Sodium PCA are in the top ten ingredients, which means they probably have reasonably high concentrations and are more likely to be effective for making hair stronger, shinier, softer, etc. I think it’s great that Mane Club put acai and papaya fruit extracts in the top five ingredients, because the antioxidants those fruits contain protect hair from UV damage and other free radicals which could weaken hair.

Almost half of the ingredients in this product are those “neutral” ingredients that I mentioned before. These ingredients perform a variety of functions like enhancing the product’s texture and adjusting its pH. The majority, however, are preservatives. There are more preservatives in this hair mask than what I’m used to seeing in other products, but that might just be because of the product’s packaging. The Mane Club hair masks are not resealable and therefore are always exposed to the air once opened, so it makes sense that the ingredients would need a little extra help to remain stable. None of the preservatives or other formula-supporting ingredients are unsafe.

I was disappointed to see that the Cry Baby hair mask contains six fragrance ingredients. Thankfully, they are the last six on the ingredient list so they should all be included in very low concentrations. This is not a product that is intended to be left on for more than five minutes, so the risk is low, but some people with very sensitive skin may experience irritation from these fragrance ingredients.

I wish Mane Club hadn’t included so many fragrance ingredients in this formula, but the scent is actually pretty mild for a hair product. I actually really enjoy the citrus scent too!

Mane Club Cha Ching moisturizing hair mask

  • Price: $3.00
  • Where to buy: ManeClubNYC.com
    • Mane Club ships internationally
  • Scent: Cherry
  • Product claims on ManeClubNYC.com:
    • Moisturizes
    • Softens
    • Deeply conditions

Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Cetearyl alcohol, Cetrimonium chloride, Prunus domestica (plum) fruit extract, Punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit extract, Vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, Hydrolyzed rice protein, Glycerin, Distearyldimonium chloride, Lactobacillus ferment, Wine extract, Isopropyl palmitate, Resveratrol, Phenoxyethanol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Butylene glycol, Sodium hydroxide, Chlorphenesin, Sodium PCA, Benzyl alcohol, Sodium benzoate, Potassium sorbate, Citric acid, Parfum/Fragrance, Benzyl salicylate, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene

If this ingredient list looks familiar, that’s because there is a lot of overlap between the ingredients in the Cry Baby and Cha Ching hair masks. The Cha Ching hair mask does have a slightly shorter list of ingredients, but surprisingly it has even more hair-loving ingredients than the Cry Baby hair mask! I’m going to jump right in with those good ingredients first and then I’ll briefly discuss the “neutral” and “naughty” ingredients.

  • Plum fruit extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Moisturizing
  • Pomegranate fruit extract
    • Deeply conditions
    • Smooths frizzy hair
  • Grapeseed oil
    • Contains antioxidants
    • Strengthens hair
    • Adds moisture and shine
  • Hydrolyzed rice protein
    • Strengthens hair
    • Volumizes
    • Adds shine
  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Distearyldimonium chloride
    • Conditions hair
    • Anti-static
  • Lactobacillus ferment
    • Relieves itchy scalp (if applied to the scalp)
    • Also acts as a preservative
  • Wine extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Rejuvenates damaged hair
    • Strengthens hair
  • Resveratrol
    • Potent antioxidant
    • May reduce hair loss and increase hair growth (if applied to the scalp)
  • Sodium PCA
    • Increases hair volume and shine
    • Improves texture of damaged hair

I am so impressed by these ingredients! They work together to make hair look and feel more healthy. Once again, most of them are in the top ten ingredients for optimal performance.

Since there are so many great beneficial ingredients in this formula, there aren’t as many “neutral” ingredients. However, the ones that are used are very similar to the ones in the Cry Baby mask; they are mostly preservatives, but there are also some other ingredients that support the formula by improving the texture, adjusting pH, etc.

The Cha Ching hair mask contains four fragrance ingredients (these are the only “naughty” ingredients), which is still a lot, but at least that’s not as many as the Cry Baby hair mask! The fragrance ingredients are once again found at the very bottom of the list, so that’s also good news. Just like I mentioned before, it is possible that some people with very sensitive skin may experience irritation from these fragrance ingredients. However, it is important to remember that this hair mask won’t be in contact with the skin for very long, so the risk of irritation is low for most people.

This hair mask smells good and the scent isn’t overpowering, but I really don’t pick up on any cherry which seems odd since it’s supposed to be cherry-scented. That doesn’t bother me at all, but I thought it was worth mentioning for those that might be more interested in the scents than I am.

Final thoughts on Mane Club Cry Baby and Cha Ching hair masks

A lot of the hair masks I’ve tried through the years just feel like heavy-duty conditioners with no extra benefits, so I didn’t have very high expectations of these Mane Club hair masks. But then I started using them and I’ve been quite impressed with the improvements I’ve seen in my hair.

While I prefer the Cha Ching moisturizing hair mask, I think both of these masks are great options. It really comes down to which benefits your hair needs most. I would recommend these to anyone, but especially those like me that have gone a little too long without a haircut! There of course is no substitute for a healthy hair trim, but a good hair mask goes a long way in making hair look and feel more healthy.

To give hair an extra boost of moisture and shine, these masks can be used alongside the Mane Club One Hit Wonder spray that I also enjoy. Your hair will thank you if you use any of these products!

Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water–Waterless Cleansing with a Boost of Antioxidants

Last week, I wrote a post about vitamin C in skincare and discovered there are even more benefits vitamin C provides to the skin than I realized. I’m always happy to find effective skincare products that contain vitamin C, whether it’s pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) or a vitamin C derivative. I use Good Molecules Vitamin C Booster Powder (which consists only of ascorbic acid) in my skincare routine twice a week, but I like to work vitamin C in through daily use products as well.

Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing WaterI usually start my morning skincare routine with micellar water instead of a traditional face wash, and the one I’ve been using recently is the Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water. This micellar water contains sodium ascorbyl phosphate which is a vitamin C derivative that is more stable than ascorbic acid. I like that this product allows me to start my skincare routine every day with a boost of vitamin C. After I cleanse with this micellar water, I follow it up with the Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner which contains another vitamin C derivative. These products make my skin feel lightly hydrated, fresh, and healthy.

Keep reading for a full review of Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water!

Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water product claims directly from DermaE.com

This refreshing Vitamin C cleansing water dissolves long-lasting makeup and impurities, while improving the appearance of skin’s texture and promoting healthy collagen. Micellar technology gently lifts off dirt without rinsing, while maintaining skin’s proper balance. Anti-aging Probiotics and antioxidant-rich Rooibos help skin to appear brighter and replenished.

We use a stable form of Vitamin C that won’t evaporate or alter before absorbing into your skin, to work better for you, naturally.

Please note that I am not a skincare professional. I am simply an individual that enjoys learning about and using skincare products. Speak to your dermatologist or esthetician if you have any concerns.

Packaging/ease of application

This product is packaged the same as most other micellar waters I’ve seen; it comes in a clear plastic bottle with a tilt-style cap. This type of packaging works reasonably well for dispensing the product, but it doesn’t provide as much control as I’d like since the texture of micellar waters is just as thin as actual water. I tend to pour out a conservative amount of this product because if you’re not careful it’s easy to get too much. I think it would be nice if this micellar water was packaged in a bottle with a pump that you press down to dispense the product, rather than flipping the bottle upside down to pour.

This micellar water can be applied with cotton balls, cotton rounds, or washcloths. I always use machine-washable cotton rounds since this is a product I use every day, and I try to reduce waste where I can. These black cotton rounds on Amazon would be a good choice because they won’t show stains like lighter colors or white would. Once the micellar water is dispensed on some kind of applicator, it’s very easy to sweep over the skin.

Some other micellar waters I’ve used in the past are a bit irritating around the eyes, and I don’t generally have very sensitive eyes so it’s surprising when that happens. Fortunately, this one is quite gentle (at least for me, as someone that doesn’t have sensitive skin). I’ve never experienced any sort of irritation from this product, even around my eyes.

I appreciate how easy this micellar water is to use. It’s much quicker and less messy than a regular face wash, because there’s no leaning over the sink splashing water everywhere! 🙂

Cleansing

I primarily use this micellar to cleanse my face in the morning, to remove any residue from my night time skincare and also excess oils. It works very well for that purpose and I think that is its ideal use. This is a very lightweight cleansing product and in my opinion, it doesn’t work as well to remove makeup.

I occasionally use this product at night as well on days that I don’t wear any makeup. I use tinted sunscreens daily and it works quite well to remove those. However, those are easier to remove than actual makeup. In the past, I’ve found that I have to tug on my skin too much to remove makeup with micellar water. For that reason, I never use this micellar water to remove makeup.

My skin always feels fresh and clean after I’ve cleansed with this micellar water. I’m very pleased with its performance as my morning cleansing product!

Ingredients

Finally, my favorite category, and the one that is most important (in my humble opinion)!

I was very happy to see that Derma E’s Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water only contains 14 ingredients:

Purified Water, Propanediol, Sorbitan Oleate Decylglucoside Crosspolymer, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Phytic Acid, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Polymnia Sonchifolia (Yacón) Root Juice, Maltodextrin, Lactobacillus, Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos) Leaf Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Natural Fragrance Oils

Please note that this list differs slightly from the ingredient list shown online. I opted to use the list shown on the packaging because I’ve found that the packaging generally has the most accurate list.

The most important ingredient in this product is Sorbitan Oleate Decylglucoside Crosspolymer, because it is the cleansing ingredient that contains micelles. Micelles attract and trap impurities which then can be easily wiped away; they act like magnets to effectively cleanse the skin. There are five other ingredients in this formula that stand out as exciting skin-loving ingredients (please note that my primary resources for ingredient information are INCI Decoder and Paula’s Choice Ingredient Dictionary):

  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
    • Sodium form of vitamin C
    • Very stable
  • Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide
    • Probiotic
    • Protects and stimulates beneficial microbial skin flora
    • Also stimulates the antimicrobial peptide released by skin cells
  • Polymnia Sonchifolia (Yacón) Root Juice
    • Provides short and long term moisture to the skin
  • Lactobacillus
    • Probiotic
    • Balances natural flora on the skin’s surface
    • Repairs skin barrier
    • Humectant
  • Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos) Leaf Extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory

I love it when I find new beneficial skincare ingredients that I’ve never seen before. That was the case with all of these except for sodium ascorbyl phosphate. This is the first skincare product I’ve ever used that contains probiotics. I think they’re a brilliant addition to protect the skin in a unique way.

I was also very pleased to see sodium ascorbyl phosphate pretty high up the list (fifth ingredient), because that means the concentration of that ingredient is reasonably high, and more likely to benefit the skin. Once sodium ascorbyl phosphate absorbs and converts to ascorbic acid, it provides several benefits to the skin like evening out skin tone, fading brown spots, brightening the skin, protecting skin from free radical damage, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, boosting collagen production, and keeping skin hydrated.

Seven of the ingredients in this product are what I call “neutral” ingredients because they are important for keeping the product stable and making it work properly, but they don’t help or hurt the skin in any way. These are ingredients like solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives.

The only potentially harmful ingredient, or I suppose I should say “ingredients” is natural fragrance oils, at the very end of the list. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing which or how many fragrance oils are used. I think that at least some of them are citrus oils because this product has a very fruity scent and vitamin C products are often made to smell citrusy. These natural fragrance oils shouldn’t be a problem for most people, especially since the concentration is low, but those with sensitive skin could experience some irritation.

Overall, I think Derma E did a good job of formulating this micellar water with a good mix of necessary ingredients and bonus ingredients that are great for maintaining healthy youthful skin.

Fragrance

I briefly touched on this product’s fragrance in the previous section, but that was from an ingredient standpoint only. What does it smell like? It’s a unique scent that I can’t quite put my finger on, but the closest thing I can compare it to is Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles cereal. It has a very sweet fruity smell, that leans more toward citrus than other fruits. The smell doesn’t linger, so if this type of scent doesn’t appeal to you, then it probably isn’t enough to make you not want to use it.

While I wish fragrance wasn’t so common in skincare products, I do enjoy the scent of this product. It’s very pleasant without being too strong.

Price

Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water is $12.95. That seems a little high for a drugstore skincare brand, but only slightly. My previous micellar water, Pacifica Coconut Water Micellar Cleansing Tonic is $12.00 for a larger bottle, but that product doesn’t contain any of the unique ingredients found in this one from Derma E. I don’t mind paying a little bit more for products that are made with special ingredients like these, so I think $12.95 is a very fair price for this Derma E micellar water.

I think I mentioned this in the product review for the Pacifica micellar water too, but I still have not found very many cruelty-free micellar waters. There are plenty of micellar waters on the market, but most of them are not cruelty-free. If more cruelty-free companies start to add micellar waters to their collections, that increased competition might result in slightly lower prices, but for now I have no problem paying $12.95 for a bottle of this magical water. 😉

While Derma E Vitamin C Micellar Cleansing Water doesn’t feel like anything particularly special on the skin, it is very effective for a quick morning cleanse. It also has an impressive ingredient list, smells great, and it’s affordable!

I would definitely recommend this micellar water to anyone looking for a quick morning cleansing product. The ingredients would be beneficial to all skin types, but those with sensitive skin may need to avoid this product due to the natural fragrance oils. If you’ve never had problems with fragrance oils in the past, this product shouldn’t give you any trouble.

Do you use micellar water in your morning or evening skincare routines? Which cruelty-free micellar water is your favorite? Please let me know in the comments below.

Clove + Hallow Pressed Mineral Foundation–Clean Buildable Coverage with a Satin Finish

Foundation creates a beautiful canvas for makeup application, but many formulas can be time consuming to apply. It needs to be blended evenly without streaking, and for those of us with combination or oily skin, it has to be set with powder so it doesn’t move throughout the day. Powder foundation, on the other hand, is easy to apply and also combines steps. It provides coverage and since it’s powder, no additional setting powder is needed. I think powder foundations are underappreciated in the makeup world and are really excellent time-savers for anyone looking to simplify their makeup routine.

Before I found out that IT Cosmetics is owned by L’Oréal, I used their powder Celebration Foundation. For a long time, I searched for a 100% cruelty-free alternative with a shade that would work for me, and I finally found one! I’ve been using Clove + Hallow Pressed Mineral Foundation for about a month and I like it just as well if not better than the IT Cosmetics powder foundation.

Unfamiliar with Clove + Hallow?Clove + Hallow Pressed Mineral Foundation So was I, until just a few months ago. Clove + Hallow is an indie beauty brand that offers makeup, brushes, and skincare. All Clove + Hallow products are vegan, cruelty-free, and clean. The company prides itself most on its Clean15 philosophy, which means all products are formulated with 15 or fewer ingredients. Clove + Hallow formulates products with both natural and synthetic ingredients for the ultimate safety and effectiveness.

Clove + Hallow Pressed Mineral Foundation claims directly from CloveandHallow.com

Clean beauty game-changer! With medium-buildable full coverage, Pressed Mineral Foundation is your new complexion BFF. Made from a base of talc-free powders and minerals plus a natural antioxidant complex to cover imperfections with a satin finish that looks like real, radiant skin. Pressed into an eco-chic refillable pan (compact must be bought separately), you get all the benefits of mineral makeup without the mess of a loose powder. Layer lightly for sheer coverage or build up with a dense brush for a full-coverage effect – whatever look you’re going for, Pressed Mineral Foundation can get you there!

Please note that I am not a makeup artist. The opinions expressed in this review are my own, as a regular person that loves makeup.

Inclusivity

Clean beauty brands have a bad reputation for having small shade ranges. It’s probably because many of them are indie brands, and therefore they may not have the resources available to produce more inclusive shade ranges. There are currently only 14 shades available in Clove + Hallow’s Pressed Mineral Foundation. Honestly, it’s not the worst shade range I’ve ever seen, and it’s not bad for a small brand. For that reason, I only knocked a few points off for inclusivity.

I looked at each of the shades in this range, as well as swatches. I found that the shades are distributed as follows, when going by shade descriptions:

  • Ultra fair: 1
  • Fair: 1
  • Light: 2
  • Light-Medium: 2
  • Medium-Dark: 3
  • Dark: 2
  • Deep: 3

I think this range would be really good if more undertones were added. For example, I have this foundation in the only fair shade, shade 2, which is “fair with golden undertones.” I have fair skin, but my undertone is neutral, so this shade appears a little too yellow on my skin. It works well enough, but it would be nice to have a more accurate shade match. Moving into the two light shades, there are only neutral and pink undertone options (no golden/warm option). Then looking at the dark and deep shades, there are none with pink/cool undertones. This is unfortunate, but again, Clove + Hallow may be unable to add more shades at this time.

Packaging/ease of application

This pressed mineral foundation is packaged in a refill pan instead of a traditional compact. If you don’t have a customizable palette (like a Z Palette), don’t worry because Clove + Hallow has you covered! There is a magnetic refillable compact sold separately for $8.00. It’s compatible with both this powder foundation and Clove + Hallow’s Bronzing Powder. Some people might not like this concept, but I think it’s brilliant! As long as the compact is being reused, it prevents a lot of waste.

The refillable compact is very well made. It includes a mirror and the magnet is strong enough to hold the pan in place securely. The lid snaps closed and is also very secure, without being difficult to open. I really like the quality of this compact, as well as the beautiful design!

The foundation itself is very easy to use. It’s not too densely packed or too powdery, so it’s easy to dip a brush in and pick up enough product without getting too much. My favorite brush to use with this powder foundation is the e.l.f. Ultimate Blending Brush, which is pictured above and featured in another recent post, Vegan Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes Part 1–Complexion Brushes

Once I pick up the product on my brush, I stamp it onto my skin to maximize coverage. I sometimes buff it on too, but I like the level of coverage that I get when stamping it on instead of buffing. While I am happy with the level of coverage this foundation provides, I disagree with the claim that it has medium-buildable full coverage. I would say that this is a light-medium coverage product. I get medium coverage when I use the brush and application method mentioned above.

This powder foundation could alternatively be used as a setting powder, both to set foundation and also add a little extra coverage. I’ve only used it that way once, and applied it with a large fluffy brush. I think it worked well for the purpose of setting my foundation, but I prefer to wear it as a standalone foundation.

Ingredients

I don’t usually review the ingredients for foundations, but since Clove + Hallow puts so much emphasis on its clean formulas with short ingredient lists, I was curious to see which ingredients they would choose to use for this product. I also wanted to know what sort of extra benefits to the skin the ingredients provide, if any. Please note that the ingredient list shown on CloveandHallow.com does not exactly match the ingredient list on the packaging. I contacted Clove + Hallow about the discrepancies I found and was informed that they simplified the ingredient list online to make it easier for consumers to read (i.e. Tocopherol is listed as Vitamin E). The ingredient list below is from the product packaging:

Mica, Silica, Boron Nitride, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Magnesium Stearate, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Gluconolactone, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Lauroyl Lysine, Sodium Benzoate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol

May contain: Titanium Dioxide Ci 77891, Zinc Oxide Ci 77947, Iron Oxide Ci 77492, Iron Oxide 77491, Iron Oxide 77499

This foundation contains a mix of neutral ingredients and also a surprising number of ingredients that are very beneficial to the skin. Since there are only 14 primary ingredients (not counting the “may contain” ingredients which are colorants), I’ll provide brief descriptions for each of them:

  • Mica
    • Opacifier
    • Gives a shimmery look to the skin
  • Silica
    • Natural mineral mattifier
  • Boron Nitride
    • Texture enhancer
    • Diffuses light
    • Improves color pay-off
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (a.k.a. fractionated coconut oil)
    • Emollient that makes skin feel smooth
  • Magnesium Stearate
    • Texture enhancer
    • Binding agent that allows powder to grip the skin
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
    • Moisturizes skin and makes it feel soft
  • Butyloctyl Salicylate (a derivative of salicylic acid)
    • Emollient that provides powder spreadability
  • Gluconolactone
    • PHA (mild chemical exfoliant) that is safe for very sensitive skin
    • Provides long-term anti-aging benefits like reducing wrinkles and increasing skin thickness
    • Moisturizer

This list starts out with several ingredients that look typical for a powder foundation, but the bottom half of the list is full of skin-loving ingredients! I am an advocate for the importance of good skincare products to keep skin looking healthy and youthful, but makeup products like this provide a little extra “oomph” or “cherry on top” to help skin look its best. I am truly surprised that Clove + Hallow was able to fit so many great ingredients into this product with such a short ingredient list.

The colorants listed below the primary ingredient list are all naturally derived. They each scored a “2” or “3” in the EWG (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep database which means they are safe.

I am absolutely thrilled with the ingredients that Clove + Hallow used to formulate this foundation! Easy 10/10!!

Staying power

The staying power of this foundation is excellent! It doesn’t “crack” like a lot of liquid foundations do, nor does it sink into fine lines very much. I did an eight hour wear test yesterday. I found that after four hours, some of my natural oils had started to come through, but the foundation still looked really good. None of it had rubbed off or broken down and the areas that often give me problems with foundations (forehead, between my eyebrows, and smile lines) still looked great! At the eight hour mark, some areas started to look dry and powdery, but this is a powder foundation so it’s not surprising. The foundation on my chin had also started to break down, but I think that’s happened with every foundation I’ve ever tried. Other than those two things, my foundation still looked really nice at the end of the day. 🙂

One thing I really like about powder foundation is that it’s very easy to touch-up. If some of it gets rubbed off or starts to break down, you can just apply more on top and it looks great! If it looks a little powdery or cakey after touch-ups, you can always use a hydrating spray like Pacifica Coconut Essence Hydro Mist to make the foundation “melt” into the skin and look more natural.

Price

Most of the foundations in my collection are from drugstore brands, so for me $24.00 is a little pricey. However, $24.00 is actually a lot less expensive than foundations from luxury brands. Clove + Hallow falls somewhere in the middle between drugstore and high-end pricing. While I wish this foundation was less expensive, I understand why it is $24.00. It probably took a lot of work to formulate this foundation just right. The ingredients are fantastic and the foundation performs beautifully, while wearing well all day long. I don’t mind paying a little bit more for a foundation that works so well and is actually good for my skin. 🙂

I am so happy that I found this clean beauty gem! Clove + Hallow Pressed Mineral Foundation is definitely a new favorite in my foundation collection and I look forward to using it more. It provides the perfect amount of coverage with the most beautiful natural looking finish. I definitely plan to repurchase another pan of this foundation once I’ve used up this one.

Powder foundations aren’t for everyone. They’re often avoided by those with dry or mature skin because some can make skin look more dry and emphasize texture. I have combination skin with minimal texture so I don’t have problems with powder products, but I think this foundation may be a good choice for people that don’t usually like powder foundations. I say that because this product contains moisturizing ingredients. Moisture isn’t something that’s usually associated with powders, but Clove + Hallow found a way to make a long-lasting powder foundation that actually hydrates the skin. If you can find a shade that works for your skin tone, this foundation is definitely worth trying!
