Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour–Easily Define Features with Precision

Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick ContourContouring has never been a very high priority step in my makeup routine, but some days I feel like being a little “extra” and adding that step to give my face subtle definition. Since contouring isn’t part of my daily routine, it’s also not something I’ve practiced very much. On the rare occasions that I contour, I want to use products that are forgiving and easy to use. When I saw that Kiko, one of my favorite makeup brands, offers a contour stick, I just had to pick it up! This product is called Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour.

Some new favorites in my makeup collection are the Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush and Kiko Milano Mood Boost Matte Bronzer. Since these are both cheek products, I knew there was a good chance I’d enjoy the Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour, too. I have definitely been enjoying it, though there are both pros and cons which is true of most products. Please continue reading for my full review which will include information on this contour stick’s inclusivity, packaging, ease of application, how well it works with other products, staying power, and price.

Inclusivity

Let’s get through this rough section so we can move on to more pleasant parts of the review! Kiko Milano is one of my favorite brands, but it always frustrates me when I see them offering very few shade options. Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour is only available in two shades (Kiko didn’t provide shade descriptions, so these are the descriptions I would give each shade):

  • 200 Hazelnut is a light warm brown
  • 201 Chocolate is a medium neutral brown

When I purchased this product, I think it was only available in the lighter shade at that time. I’m glad that the Chocolate shade has been added or restocked since then. Hazelnut is definitely ideal for my fair skin and may work for light skin as well. I would suggest the Chocolate shade to those with medium and tan skin tones, but I don’t feel that it would work for deep skin tones.

My biggest complaint about this product’s inclusivity is that there should be at least one darker shade, but it doesn’t stop there. In the photos online, the Hazelnut shade looks quite neutral to me, but as you can see in this arm swatch photo, it’s actually warm toned. Contouring products ideally should be cool toned to create the look of shadows on the skin.

While the Hazelnut shade is light enough for my fair skin, I’d prefer it to be cooler in tone to create more believable contours. I recognize that some people may enjoy the warm tone of this shade, but I think Kiko should’ve provided a cooler shade option for people with fair to light skin. The Chocolate shade appears to be more appropriate for contouring, but I might change my mind if I saw it in person.

Since my Hazelnut shade is on the warmer side, I’ve been using it as a 2-in-in contour and bronzer. I wouldn’t say the contour is believable on my skin, but I do like how it warms up my complexion. Especially in the summer, my skin needs that color!

Packaging/ease of application

Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour is packaged as the name suggests, in stick form. It comes in a plastic twist-up tube that’s similar to the packaging for e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick that I reviewed recently. Unfortunately, I have to say that e.l.f. did it much better. Kiko Milano usually makes beautiful sturdy packaging, but in this product’s case it looks very bland and feels cheap.

I don’t put too much weight on packaging normally since the product on the inside is what’s most important. However, packaging can sometimes be a big deal! When I twist up this contour stick, it works well enough, but sometimes I have trouble getting it to go back down into the tube. In fact, there have been times when it wouldn’t twist down at all and I had to bang the bottom of the tube on the counter to get it to fall back down into the tube.

This isn’t a new type of packaging design, so I’m not sure why it doesn’t work better. I expect this type of packaging to twist the product up and down smoothly as needed. This isn’t a deal breaker for me, but it can certainly be annoying at times.

As far as application goes, this product actually is very easy to use! The formula is very creamy and glides over the skin effortlessly. I like that I’m able to apply it exactly where I want it on my skin without needing to dip into a pot. I usually put some along the hairline on my forehead and also on my cheekbones and jawline.

When I first started using Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour, I blended it with my fluffy bronzer brush. I noticed that with that brush, it was moving the product around too much and almost blending it away. I’ve had much better luck using my e.l.f. Small Stipple Brush since it provides more control over where I’m blending. This is not a highly pigmented formula, so it’s important not to overblend.

Team player

With cream products like this one, I’m always concerned that they’ll cause the foundation underneath to move around. It’s a common problem I’ve had with creams and it’s very frustrating! Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour somehow doesn’t do that. My foundation stays in place nicely and the contour/bronzer goes where I want it to go as I blend it.

The reason I deducted two points here is because I’ve noticed that this product can sometimes cause my skin to look textured. My skin is actually pretty smooth and I can’t come up with any explanation for the texture I see when using this contour stick, except for the product itself. I mainly see this texture problem on my forehead and it’s not terribly obvious. I doubt that anyone else notices, but of course I do!

Other than the minor texture issue, Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour is a great team player. I appreciate that this is a rare cream product that I can trust not to mess up my foundation! 🙂

Staying power

As I mentioned previously, Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour isn’t a very pigmented product. That’s great for my fair skin because even though the shade Hazelnut is much darker than my skin tone, it blends out to look very natural. I’m bringing this up here because honestly, due to the natural look of this product on my skin, it’s a bit hard for me to tell if any wears off throughout the day.

With that being said, I really think the staying power of this cream contour is good. I still have a warmth to my face at the end of the day that wouldn’t be there if this product wasn’t still hanging on. I’ve also noticed that even though the texture of this contour stick is very creamy, it doesn’t stay that way on the skin once it’s blended. It’s almost a cream to powder formula, and I think that helps it to last much longer than it would if it stayed very emollient all day.

Price

Most of the contour sticks I’ve seen are from prestige brands. Contour sticks aren’t a common product offered by drugstore beauty brands, so I was really excited to find this one. Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour is $14.99. That might seem a bit pricey, but it’s really not bad! I found a couple of very inexpensive options from Wet N’ Wild, but sadly WNW is no longer cruelty-free (their products are sold in China). On the other end of the spectrum, most high-end contour sticks are $30.00+!

The biggest question here is “is it worth $14.99?” I think that’s very subjective! I rated this product well for price because comparatively, it is a good value. However, I personally feel that it is a bit overpriced since it isn’t everything I had hoped it would be. If they improved the packaging and shade range, I think $14.99 would be a perfectly reasonable price.

As I’m sure you’ve gathered from reading my review, I have very mixed feelings about Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour. It’s definitely not one of my favorite products from the brand, but I don’t regret trying it, either. It’s fun and easy to use, there are just some things that need improvement: primarily shade range and packaging. Otherwise, it’s not a bad product.

Time to review Kiko’s product claims! First, they say it has a matte finish, creamy texture, and great blendability. I agree with all of those claims! Next, “application is easy and precise.” Yes, absolutely! That’s one of my favorite things about this product.

They say the product enables the user to sculpt the face, which isn’t entirely true in my opinion. As I said before, the Hazelnut shade is pretty warm toned and better suited for bronzing the face (the Chocolate shade, on the other hand, may be a very good contour shade) which is not the same as contouring. The last product claim is just about the packaging “contemporary packaging stands out with its black shiny finish with the KK logo embossed on the top.” I think this is misleading, making it sound much better quality than it is in reality.

I wouldn’t recommend Kiko Milano Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour to everyone, but I think a lot of people would like it. In fact, it has a 4.5 star rating on KikoCosmetics.com! If it sounds like a product you would enjoy, and one of the shades would work for your skin tone, then I’d say go for it!

Have you tried any contour sticks? How do you think they would compare with this one? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion–for Hydrated Skin that Smells Sweet as a Peach

Pacifica Strawberry Peach LotionPacifica has been one of my favorite brands for years. I’ve mainly used their skincare products, but I’ve also purchased some of their makeup, body care, and hair care products. One of my very few gripes with Pacifica products is that most of them are fragranced. A lot of people can’t tolerate fragrance in their skincare and makeup products because skin on the face is more likely to be sensitive than skin on the body. While I prefer unfragranced skincare and makeup products, I do enjoy a good scent experience from my body care products! Pacifica makes some really lovely fragrances, including the fragrance used in the Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion.

I love strawberries AND peaches, so Pacifica’s Strawberry Peach collection really appealed to me when it launched! This collection started out with five products, but it currently consists of a body scrub, body lotion, and body wash. I tried the body wash first and loved it so much, I just had to get the lotion too!

I’ve now been using the Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion for a few weeks and really am enjoying it. If you’re interested in this fruity body lotion, keep reading for my full product review! I’ll discuss packaging, ease of application, hydration, ingredients, fragrance, and price.

Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion product description from PacificaBeauty.com

Packaging/ease of application

Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion is packaged in an adorable ombre pink squeeze tube. It’s made out of 50% recycled plastic that can be recycled again! I appreciate that Pacifica offers a free recycling program (they even give loyalty points to those that use it) to make it even easier to recycle their products.

I think squeeze tube packaging is perfect for this body lotion. It’s not too thick, so it’s easy to squeeze out. I like that with this type of packaging, I don’t have to dip into a jar and get the lotion under my nails. With body butters, I accept that as part of the deal, but otherwise I don’t want to fuss with it! Anybody else with me on that? 🙂

Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion has a smooth creamy texture. It’s not an especially lightweight formula, but it’s not heavy either. As texture goes, I think of this as a standard body lotion. It rubs into the skin quickly and doesn’t take too long to absorb. I don’t like it when moisturizing products leave me feeling sticky or greasy all day long, and this one does not do that. You can confidently put on a pair of pants after applying this lotion, without fear of your legs getting stuck!

Hydration

Hydration is always a tough category for me to review because it’s so subjective. I try to be fair to the products I review by basing my opinion on the specific type of product. For example, in this case, I’m reviewing a body lotion, not a body butter. Body lotions are not meant to be as heavy or hydrating as body butters.

In the fall and winter months, my skin tends to be consistently dry. However, in the spring and summer when it becomes more humid where I live, my skin is normal to slightly dry. During these warmer months, I find Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion to be plenty hydrating. I think it would still be hydrating enough in the cooler months as well, with a heavier moisturizer added into my rotation a couple of times a week.

I think most people will be pleased with the amount of hydration this lotion provides. Those with very dry skin may prefer something heavier, like a body butter. Alternatively, those with very dry skin could use this body lotion “as needed” between applications of heavier products.

Ingredients

I’ve been very impressed by some of the ingredients used in other Pacifica body care products, so I was excited to research the ingredients in Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion. I’m not as critical of the ingredients in my body care products as I am with my skincare, but I like to see several ingredients that will benefit the skin on my body, too. I’ll still point out the ingredients that could be problematic to those with sensitive skin as well.

I wasn’t disappointed by my findings and I hope you’ll feel the same! Here is the full list of ingredients for this product:

aqua, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, octyl palmitate, glyceryl stearate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, stearic acid, stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, fragaria ananassa (strawberry) leaf extract*, prunus persica (peach) leaf extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), hyaluronic acid, tocopherol (vitamin E), helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, camellia sinensis (green tea) extract, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) flower/leaf/stem extract, camellia sinensis (white tea) extract, arnica montana flower extract, laminaria digitata (sea kelp) extract, xanthan gum, chamomile recutita (matricaria) flower extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) extract, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, parfum**

*ingredient was listed twice; I removed the duplicate that I believe to be incorrect    **natural aromatherapy blend

This is an interesting mix of ingredients, including several that are great for the skin! When I research ingredients, I classify them as “good,” “neutral,” or “bad.” Good ingredients provide specific benefits to the skin, neutral ingredients neither benefit or harm the skin, and bad ingredients have the potential to be sensitizing. Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion contains 12 “good,” 10 “neutral,” and 4 “bad” ingredients. I’ll start with brief descriptions of the 12 good ingredients that skin loves.

  • Aloe barbadensis leaf juice
    • Moisturizer
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Fragaria ananassa (strawberry) leaf extract
    • Skin conditioner
    • May fade brown spots by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme which forms melanin
    • May preserve collagen by inhibiting collagenase, which breaks the peptide bonds in collagen
  • Prunus persica (peach) leaf extract
    • Moisturizer
    • Skin conditioner
  • Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
    • Purest and most researched form of vitamin C
    • Potent antioxidant
    • Evens and brightens skin tone
    • Boosts collagen production, which helps to keep skin smooth and firm
  • Hyaluronic acid
    • Humectant
    • Binds up to 1,000x its weight in water
    • Plumps skin and reduces appearance of wrinkles
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil
    • Improves damaged or irritated skin barrier
    • Loaded with fatty acids
  • Camellia sinensis (green tea) extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Camellia sinensis (white tea) extract
    • Antioxidant
  • Laminaria digitata (sea kelp) extract
    • Contains antioxidants
    • Nourishes and hydrates the skin
  • Chamomile recutita (matricaria) flower extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Skin-soothing
    • May cause a reaction in those that are aggravated by other plants in the daisy family

It’s great to see so many ingredients that hydrate and improve skin, as well as the antioxidants that protect skin from free radical damage! I wish more of these ingredients were closer to the top of the list (only three of them are in the top ten) since those are the ones with the highest concentrations. However, it’s possible that some may be more effective at lower concentrations.

Next up: neutral ingredients. These are the “supporting players” in the formula. These ingredients perform important functions and are things like solvents, emollients, thickeners, and preservatives.

The remaining ingredients are the ones I’ve labeled as “bad” for their potential to harm skin. Fortunately, these are all in the second half of the list and therefore likely to be included in very small concentrations.

The first is lavender extract which is a fragrance ingredient. Unfortunately, fragrance ingredients are some of the most common skin sensitizers. Next is arnica montana flower extract. Some sources think it has an anti-inflammatory property, but it can cause skin irritation. Witch hazel extract has antioxidant and soothing properties, but one of the antioxidants (tannin) can make it sensitizing. It also contains a fragrance component called “eugenol” which may be sensitizing. Lastly, “parfum” which is Pacifica’s proprietary natural aromatherapy blend. Pacifica doesn’t disclose the composition of the “parfum,” but it likely includes skin sensitizers.

I know those “bad” ingredients sound intimidating, but they aren’t likely to cause problems for most people. I’ve never experienced any type of irritation or sensitization from this product. To stay on the safe side, I think those that have sensitive skin on their bodies should avoid this lotion.

Fragrance

I feel like a bit of a hypocrite here since I just finished reviewing Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion’s ingredients which included some fragrance ingredients that could harm skin. But let’s face it, most of the people buying this product are probably interested mostly for its scent. I know that’s what drew me in!

As I mentioned in the intro, I love strawberries and peaches so I knew I’d enjoy the scent of this lotion. I was not wrong! This lotion smells delicious. Pacifica describes the scent as smelling like fresh strawberries with a hint of peach, but I think it’s the other way around. I’m not entirely sure I can even discern a strawberry scent, but the peach is quite strong!

If you don’t like lotions that are heavily fragranced, this one probably isn’t for you. While I enjoy this lotion’s scent, I have to admit that it is intense! If I put it on in my bathroom and my husband goes outside, he says he can smell it outside! It does fade over time, but the scent is potent when first applied.

Price

I’ve noticed lately that some of Pacifica’s products are quite expensive considering it’s a drugstore brand. Fortunately, Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion is reasonably priced at $10.00 for five ounces (147 ml) of lotion. There are plenty of alternative body lotions in the drugstore price range that can be purchased for less than $10.00, but I’ve found that most are not cruelty-free or vegan.

The other drugstore body lotions also aren’t likely to contain the long list of skincare ingredients that are found in this one from Pacifica. The ingredients and unique fragrance really set this product apart. I think it’s well worth $10.00!

Pacifica Strawberry Peach collection

Do you think you’d really like the strawberry peach scent like I do? You may want to pick up the other Pacifica Strawberry Peach products. It’s a small collection, but not one to be overlooked! Here are the other products available:

I haven’t tried the body scrub, but I do have the body wash. I’ve been enjoying it as much as the lotion! I use it every time I shower, and then I apply the Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion to moisturize.

I’m so glad I discovered the Pacifica Strawberry Peach collection this year! The scent is great year-round, but especially in the summer. I really enjoy the Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion since its scent lingers on the skin for a while after it’s applied. I don’t feel the need to put on any perfume when I’m wearing this lotion because it makes me smell sweet as a peach!

Pacifica doesn’t make any bold claims about this product, but instead provides a brief description. First, they state that it hydrates. I can definitely confirm that! They go on to state that the aromatherapy blend, sunflower seed oil, and vitamin E support beautiful skin. The aromatherapy blend smells great, but it doesn’t actually do anything for the skin. The sunflower seed oil and vitamin E do, though, along with the other skincare ingredients I mentioned in the “Ingredients” section of the review.

I think anyone that enjoys fruity scented body lotions would really like Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion! It’s quick to apply, hydrates the skin, contains excellent ingredients, smells amazing, and it’s affordable! What more could we ask for? 🙂

Do you plan on trying Pacifica Strawberry Peach Body Lotion? What about other Pacifica body care products? There are so many great options. Let me know in the comments!

Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara–Clean Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara

Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash MascaraI’ve reviewed a few mascaras here on IntegriBeauty, and honestly I’ve loved them all. Most recently, I reviewed the Pacifica Stellar Gaze Length & Strength Mineral Mascara. I like to try mascaras from a variety of brands, so I didn’t expect that the next mascara I’d try would also be from Pacifica. Well, when the new Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara launched, I couldn’t resist for very long. The photos looked so promising!

I was very surprised when this new mascara launched, because Pacifica’s Vegan Collagen collection started out with only skincare products and expanded to include some hair products. I never thought the collection would include any kind of makeup! In addition to this mascara, Pacifica Vegan Collagen Lash Serum & Primer launched very recently. I haven’t tried it yet, but based on it’s high ratings I think I should!

I’ve now been using Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara for close to a month, and I look forward to using it every day. It’s a really nice mascara and I’m so excited to tell you more about it! Please continue reading for a full product review which will include information on packaging, ease of application, how well it lengthens lashes, staying power, ease of removal, and price.

Packaging/ease of application

I’ve said it before, but I have to say it again: Pacifica makes some of the most beautiful packaging! Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara comes in a glass bottle that’s soft pink and purple to look like cotton candy or a sunset that turns the sky those gorgeous pastel colors. In addition to being beautiful, it feels very luxe.

The wand is plastic, but well-made. The applicator is a vegan “natural” bristle brush (instead of having rubber “spiky” bristles) and the bristles are in a spiral pattern as the description states. The way the bristles are arranged, they’re actually quite far apart which I thought might be a problem for application, but it really isn’t.

This is actually one of the easiest to apply mascaras I’ve ever owned. The formula is very smooth and the bristles glide over the eyelashes effortlessly. I think that’s partly because this mascara has more of a wet formula. I find this mascara to also build quickly.

The only complaint I have about this mascara in regards to its packaging and ease of application, is the size of the brush. Like the Pacifica Stellar Gaze Length & Strength Mineral Mascara, this mascara’s brush is larger than average (though it is smaller than the Stellar Gaze brush). I don’t have very large eyes, so I’m more comfortable with a smaller brush.

With all that being said, I don’t have the same problem with application that I have with the Stellar Gaze mascara. When I used that one, the large size of the brush would cause me to get mascara on my skin almost every time. For some reason, it’s very rare that I have that problem with this newer mascara.

Lengthening

Length and separation are the most important things I look for in mascaras. My eyelashes are probably average length, but I really like the look of long lashes. Separation is important to me because my eyelashes are a bit sparse. If they clump together, then it looks like I only have a few eyelashes and that is not a good look!

Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara lengthens lashes instantly for a natural look. Since I like my lashes to look quite long, I usually add a second layer to make them extra bold. I’m able to build as much length as I want with this mascara!

I have a lot of trouble layering some mascaras because that can cause them to clump. Fortunately, I’ve never experienced that with this Pacifica mascara. Since it’s a wet formula, there’s plenty of time to build it up for the desired effect. The brush does an excellent job of separating lashes even once a lot of mascara has been applied.

Some of you reading this may be wondering if this mascara provides volume. While volume isn’t a priority for me, I’m happy to say that this mascara actually does a great job at providing volume! My lashes always look thicker and very healthy with this mascara applied. In this photo, you can see a big difference between the length and volume of the eyelashes on the left with mascara applied, and the eyelashes on the right that are bare.

Staying power

Besides the benefits of mascara like length and volume, I often hear people looking for mascaras that won’t smudge or flake. Some people seem to be especially prone to this, and there could be a variety of reasons such as oily under-eyes or watery eyes. I’m actually very fortunate that I don’t often experience problems with mascaras smudging or flaking on me, though it has happened before and I know how annoying it can be. Nobody wants raccoon eyes!

Since Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara has such a wet formula that almost feels oily when applied, I thought it might smudge on me. I was wrong! This mascara has never smudged on my skin, or flaked throughout the day. It stays in place perfectly all day long.

I always curl my eyelashes before applying mascara because my lashes are naturally almost straight. After I apply this mascara, unfortunately the curl drops slightly. I think it’s because the formula is wet and a bit heavy, weighing down my lashes. This is a common problem I have with a lot of mascaras, so it’s not a big surprise. If your eyelashes naturally have a bit of a curl, you may not have this problem.

I only deducted one point in this category because I’ve found a partial solution to the problem of this mascara not holding a curl. I normally curl my lashes to the point where they look curled, but not unnaturally curled. If I do a little extra to make them very tightly curled, then when the curl drops, it doesn’t drop as far and my lashes still look curled. I hope that makes sense!

Ease of removal

When I was using Pacifica Stellar Gaze Length & Strength Mineral Mascara, I was so surprised by how difficult it was to remove, considering its formula is not waterproof. I wondered if Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara would be equally as tough to remove. Whew, thank goodness it isn’t!

If I forget to grab a separate product to remove my eye makeup, I try to remove it all with whatever face wash I’m using at the time. I wasn’t able to do that with the Stellar Gaze mascara and even cleansing balm wouldn’t remove all of it. I’m able to remove Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara with any of my three methods: cleansing balm, baby shampoo, and face wash. I’m so glad I don’t have to struggle to remove this mascara, because when mascara is hard to remove I tend to pull eyelashes out more often and I don’t want that!

I think the only way this mascara could be easier to remove would be if it had a tubing formula. Tubing mascaras are unusual, but extremely easy to remove with warm water alone. As this is not a tubing mascara, I’m very pleased with how easy it is to remove.

Price

Compared to other drugstore brands, Pacifica’s makeup can be pretty expensive. Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara is $16.00 for an average amount of product (the Pacifica Stellar Gaze mascara is $14.00). Mascara is one of those products that varies greatly in price from brand to brand. Looking at drugstore brands, there are some mascaras priced as low as $3.00! However, on the other end of the spectrum, prestige brand mascaras are sometimes $30.00 or more.

So the question is this: is Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara worth the $16.00 price tag? In my humble opinion, yes it is. While there are a lot of very affordable mascaras at the drugstore, I don’t think they can compete with this one. It’s pretty close to perfect in so many ways and is formulated with great ingredients that are safe for sensitive eyes. I don’t always put as much weight on clean ingredients, but since mascara sits right above our eyes, I definitely prefer a clean formula.

Between the product photos and before/after photos shared when Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara launched, I truly couldn’t resist picking it up! Both the packaging and the formula are beautiful. The only things that would make this mascara better, in my eyes, would be a slightly smaller wand and if the formula was a bit lighter to hold curl more effectively.

Let’s take a look at those lengthy product claims from Pacifica. First, they state that this mascara conditions lashes, lengthens, and adds volume. Based on the ingredients and the feel of this mascara, I’d say it does work to condition lashes. It absolutely lengthens and volumizes as well. They say the brush applies this mascara evenly to every eyelash and separates them to give a fluttery effect. I have to agree with this claim too!

The final claims are from a 3rd party clinical trial. Of ten participants, nine agreed that Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara instantly makes lashes appear longer, thicker, healthier, and wears up to 12 hours. I agree with all of these claims! My lashes always look long, thick, and healthy when I apply this mascara, and it lasts at least 12 hours.

I definitely recommend this mascara! I hope to try it with the Pacifica Vegan Collagen Lash Serum & Primer eventually. I’m curious to see how that affects the application and overall look.

Have you tried any Pacifica mascaras? Do you think you’ll try Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara? Please let me know in the comments below!

Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30–Easily Reapply Sunscreen OVER Makeup

Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30Sunscreen is a vital part of any skincare routine. In fact, applying sunscreen is the best thing you can do to prevent premature aging and skin cancer. Did you know that it’s important to reapply sunscreen, even if you’re wearing makeup? The big question is, how do you apply sunscreen over makeup? The best method I’ve found is to use sunscreen powder. I’m using Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30.

This is the first sunscreen powder I’ve ever tried, but I’m enjoying it so far! I previously tried a couple of setting sprays with SPF, but they were a bit irritating and smelled strongly of sunscreen. I was not a fan, so I knew that wasn’t the best option for refreshing my sunscreen. When it comes to sunscreen, it’s especially important to find products that are enjoyable to use since we’re more likely to use products we like!

I don’t use Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 every day since I haven’t been spending very much time outside. However, it’s been great to have on hand for days that I do need to go out in the afternoon. I’ve used this product enough times now that I’m familiar with its pros and cons. Please continue reading for my full review where I’ll discuss packaging, ease of application, sun protection, ingredients, how it layers over makeup, and price.

This translucent non-nano mineral powder can be worn on its own or over makeup for a natural, flawless look. Easy to carry to reapply throughout the day for all day sun protection from harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Packaging/ease of application

Applying Derma E sunscreen powderThe packaging for Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 is very similar to that of other sunscreen powders I’ve seen, but I still think it’s so innovative! The powder is contained on one end of the product, and the other end is a brush. There’s a plastic piece that comes up over the brush to protect its bristles when the cap is being taken on and off.

While I think the design is brilliant, I deducted a few points from this category, because of the packaging. First, while the design is convenient, it’s also wasteful. There’s quite a bit of waste with this product once it’s used up because of the built-in brush and piece of plastic that’s only there to protect the brush. I think Derma E should redesign this product to make it refillable. I found a Jane Iredale sunscreen powder that is made to work with refills, so I know it could be done!

There are a couple other flaws with the packaging as well. It feels quite cheap and I’m not sure how well it would hold up in a suitcase if you wanted to travel with it. I think it would be fine in a purse, but I don’t think the plastic could withstand very much weight if it was crushed in a suitcase. Lastly, the brush…it is not a good quality brush at all. I’m honestly not surprised, as Derma E is a skincare brand and doesn’t ordinarily make brushes. However, it’s not very soft and it sheds quite a bit even though I’ve never tried to wash it and have always been gentle when using it.

The poor packaging of this product definitely isn’t a deal breaker. It gets the job done and that’s what matters most. However, I think Derma E should consider making it refillable, a bit sturdier, and improve the quality of the brush.

Until I got this product and tried it for myself, I was pretty confused about how it works. I thought there’d be some kind of button to dispense the powder, but there’s not! It actually flows through the brush automatically. I was skeptical the first time I used it because I didn’t see powder on the brush, but I did see a small cloud of powder as I swirled it over my face. It’s actually a very smart delivery system and quite easy to use!

Sun protection

The most important part of every sunscreen, of course, is the level of sun protection provided. First, sunscreen should be labeled as “broad spectrum,” which means that the product will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens that do not offer broad spectrum protection will not protect you from UVA rays. UVA rays were not always fully understood like they are today, but we need to be protected from them since UVA rays, like UVB, damage the skin’s DNA and can lead to skin cancer. UVA rays also penetrate the skin deeply to cause premature signs of aging. Fortunately, this sunscreen does provide broad spectrum protection!

The second thing to note is SPF factor. Sunscreens with an SPF factor of 15 provide 93% protection from UV rays (7% of UV rays are able to reach your skin), while SPF 30 provides 97% protection and SPF 50 provides 98% protection. No sunscreen can provide 100% protection, though SPF 100 is very close with 99% protection. The Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder has an SPF factor of 30, so it provides 97% protection, which is not bad. Since I am fair-skinned and burn easily, I wish it was SPF 50 or higher (to be fair, most if not all mineral sunscreens are SPF 50 or lower).

There are a couple of other things to consider with this sunscreen powder’s sun protection. My biggest concern is that certain parts of the face will be missed, since it’s not easy to see where it’s been applied. It’s important to apply sunscreen to every part of the face to avoid sun damage.

I also want to note that this sunscreen powder is not water- or sweat-resistant. If you’ll be sweating a lot on your face, definitely reapply more often than recommended. If you’ll be spending time in water…frankly, I’d recommend skipping makeup (gasp!) and using a regular water-resistant face sunscreen and/or a sunscreen stick like the Beauty by Earth Mineral Sunscreen Stick, which is also water-resistant.

Ingredients

Since this is the first sunscreen powder I’ve ever reviewed, I really wasn’t sure what to expect to see on the ingredients list. It’s actually a pretty simple formulation, but a good one! There are often some questionable ingredients in skincare products, but this one doesn’t have anything like that. All of the ingredients are there to provide sun protection or other skincare benefits, or support the overall formula.

A keyword in the name of this product, Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30, is mineral. There are two sunscreen ingredients in this product, and they’re both mineral/physical sunscreens: titanium dioxide (17.29%) and zinc oxide (20%). These ingredients provide sun protection by reflecting UV rays away from the skin.

Here’s a full list of the inactive ingredients in Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30:

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Capryloyl Glycine, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Mica, Potassium Sorbate, Silica, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopherol, Undecylenoyl Glycine

*May contain Iron Oxides (CI 77492, CI 77489)

Are you surprised by how few ingredients are in this product? I was! Looking at these inactive ingredients (not counting the iron oxides), there are four “good” skincare ingredients and six “neutral” supporting ingredients. I’ll provide brief descriptions of the skincare ingredients first:

  • Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Capryloyl Glycine
    • Synthetic amino acid derivative
    • Protects skin from water loss
  • Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Potent skin-soothing property
    • May aggravate skin that is sensitive to plants in the daisy family
  • Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier

These ingredients aren’t likely to make any big changes to the skin, but they are helpful for protecting the skin and keeping it healthy. Really, since this is a sunscreen product, all of these other skincare ingredients are just added bonuses. 🙂

The other inactive ingredients are simple and safe. They perform important functions to support the formula. These ingredients include an emollient that makes skin feel smooth, preservatives, colorant, thickener, and an antimicrobial. The iron oxides that may or may not be included in the formula are additional colorants that are yellow and orange in color.

I was so relieved to see that there aren’t any common irritants in Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30. The other Derma E skincare products I’ve used have been fragranced, and fragrance ingredients have the potential to be sensitizing. This product should be safe for those with sensitive skin (with the exception of people sensitive to plants in the daisy family; see above description for Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract).

Team player

Since Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 is applied over everything else, including makeup, it’s a little easier for it to be a good team player compared to most leave-on skincare products. What do I mean by “team player?” I’m simply reviewing how well this powder interacts with other products on the skin.

I should note that I only use this product on days that I’m wearing makeup, because the other days I can easily reapply my standard sunscreen or use a sunscreen stick for reapplication. I use this sunscreen powder specifically because it doesn’t disturb my makeup. In fact, it sometimes helps my makeup to look better!

I have combination skin with an oily t-zone and this powder mattifies my skin. In addition to mattifying my skin, it also makes it feel very smooth and has a slight pore-blurring effect. This product really is a 2-in-1 makeup and skincare product. It actually improves the look of my makeup instead of making it look cakey, which I feared. I’ve never needed to use this powder more than once in a day, so it’s possible that it would become cakey after multiple applications. However, I think that would be true for any type of powder.

One last note on this subject: on my skin tone, I don’t feel that this powder affects the color of my foundation. I’ve read some reviews that it’s too dark for some fair-skinned people, while those with darker skin tones find it to be too light. I have fair skin and I don’t have any problems with the shade of this powder. However, it does look like it would be too light for deep skin tones. Derma E claims that this powder is translucent and that seems to be true for me, but not as much for others. It’s possible they are applying it more liberally than I do, as I simply try to coat every part of my face with a thin layer of powder.

Price

When I first saw this product, it was the first of its kind that I’d ever seen. I thought to myself, “wow, that’s brilliant, but it seems so expensive!” Compared to some other products from Derma E, the Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 is kind of expensive at $21.95.

However, as I found similar products, I learned that $21.95 is actually very affordable by comparison! This Derma E product was the least expensive of all the sunscreen powders I found. I think part of the reason this type of product is pricey could be that there aren’t that many options (compared to other types of sunscreen).

Some sunscreen powders I found are $60+ and I think that’s crazy! This Derma E product isn’t perfect, but I can’t imagine any sunscreen powder is worth three times the price of this one. I’m so happy I found this affordable option for refreshing my sunscreen.

For the longest time, I applied sunscreen in the morning, applied makeup over it, and crossed my fingers hoping I’d be protected from the sun all day long. Thank goodness I finally have a product I enjoy that allows me to reapply sunscreen no matter how much makeup I’m wearing. I’ll definitely be taking Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 with me on my upcoming vacation to make sure I can look good and also feel good about my sun protection! Tinted lip balm and sunglasses are a must, too!

Derma E’s product claims for this sunscreen powder are quite simple. They state that it is translucent, may be worn alone or over makeup, looks natural, and that it’s easy to carry and reapply. The only claim I might disagree with is that this powder is translucent. While I don’t see any color from this powder when I apply it over my makeup, there is definitely a light tint to it. It’s a tint that will work for a lot of skin tones, but I think it’s entirely possible that some people will find it to be too light or dark. I agree with all of their other claims!

One thing I’d like to note, is that while the directions for this product don’t specifically state that it’s meant for reapplication of sunscreen, I think that is its best use. You’re much more likely to get thorough, even sun protection with a traditional sunscreen applied first (whether you’re wearing makeup or not). Then Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 is perfect for reapplying sunscreen for extended protection from UV rays.

Have you ever used a sunscreen powder to reapply sunscreen over makeup? Or is there another method that you prefer? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject, so please comment below!

Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush–Liquid Blush that Applies Effortlessly

Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy BlushKiko Milano launched a fruit-themed collection for summer this year, and as expected, it’s adorable! The collection includes a wide variety of products for the face, cheeks, eyes, lips, and even a brush set and makeup bag. I believe this collection will only be available for a limited time. I try not to purchase too many products that are limited edition, but I couldn’t resist the liquid blush. It’s the Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush, and I am loving it!

Most of the blushes I own are powder instead of cream or liquid. I really struggle to make a lot of non-powder products work. However, I decided to give this one a shot because I’ve been enjoying several Kiko Milano products, the shades looked beautiful, and I like the packaging very much!

I’m really not sure why this product was launched as part of the Fruit Explosion collection instead of Kiko Milano’s regular line. Except for the product name, there’s nothing “fruity” about this product. That’s OK with me though, I still really enjoy it! Now that I’ve had a chance to test this blush several times, I’m happy to share a thorough review.

Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush product claims directly from KikoCosmetics.com

Liquid blusher, bright finish. The innovative refreshing and ultra-light texture enlivens your skin with a delicate touch of colour with a super luminous finish. It blends easily, for a result shaded from light to intense. Offered in a handy on-the-go size with built-in applicator, it is also perfect on holiday! Provided in 3 fantastic trendy shades.

Please note that I am not a makeup artist. The opinions expressed in this review are my own, as a regular person that loves makeup.

Inclusivity

In my review of the Kiko Milano Mood Boost Matte Bronzer, I mentioned that the shade ranges for many Kiko Milano products aren’t the greatest. I’ve noticed that it’s even worse in the limited edition collections. I can understand to a degree, but I think they should at least try to make shades that will work for every skin tone.

Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush comes in three shades (Kiko Milano doesn’t provide shade descriptions, so I’ll describe each one as best I can):

  • 01 Sweet Biscuit is a neutral brown/pink
  • 02 Lively Mauve is…mauve
  • 03 Brisk Pink is a peachy pink

Even though I have fair skin, I went for the shade that appears to be the boldest, which is Brisk Pink. I had a feeling that this blush would sheer out as it’s blended, and I was right. In this photo, I swatched it on my arm two ways: directly from the applicator, and blended out. The blended swatch actually looks more intense here than it appears on my cheeks, as I don’t use that much product on my cheeks.

I think these shades are definitely sufficient for those with fair to light skin, maybe even medium skin. However, I don’t believe any of them would show up on deeper skin tones. I think Kiko should’ve included one or two deeper shades, or at least made the formula more pigmented to work for more skin tones. I hope that Kiko will prioritize inclusivity more in the future!

Packaging/ease of application

If Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush wasn’t labeled, you might think it’s lip gloss based on its packaging! The only obvious difference is that the tube is shorter and wider than most lip glosses. There is a small doe foot applicator inside the cap that picks up more than enough product.

This type of applicator is so easy to use! I definitely prefer this type of packaging over a squeeze tube, which is common for liquid blushes. The doe foot applicator makes application a breeze because you can use it to dot the blush directly onto the cheeks. Even though more blush than is necessary comes out on the applicator, it’s still very easy to get just the right amount onto the cheeks.

The directions Kiko provides for this product aren’t really all that helpful. They state “With the integrated flock applicator, spread the blush directly on the cheekbone and blend towards the cheeks.” I think the placement of the blush is up to each individual, but Kiko should’ve provided some advice on the best way to blend it out.

In my opinion, the best method for blending this liquid blush is to use a small duo fiber blush brush. I’ve been using the e.l.f. Putty & Cream Blush Brush, which is designed for the e.l.f. Putty Blushes, but it works well with other cream and liquid blush formulas too. With this brush, I can blend this blush into the skin in just a few seconds. I love how quick and easy it is!

Team player

I’ve always struggled a little bit with making cream/liquid face products work over foundations, even when others seem to have no problems at all. Fortunately, Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush is almost foolproof! I think it’s probably because the formula is liquid and very lightweight. Since it’s so easy to blend, there’s less movement of the product to cause the foundation underneath to move around.

While this blush performs much better over foundations than a lot of other cream and liquid face products I’ve tried, it’s still not perfect. It will disturb the makeup underneath if I spend too much time blending. The key with this blush is to work quickly and then leave it alone.

These photos show how Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush looks applied over two types of foundation. In the first photo, I applied it over Colourpop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation, a liquid foundation. In the second photo, I applied it carefully over my favorite powder foundation, Clove + Hallow Pressed Mineral Foundation. I think it looks so fresh and pretty paired with both types of foundation! It also looks great on more natural days over a simple tinted sunscreen like Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Sunscreen Lotion

Staying power

I didn’t have very high expectations for the staying power of Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush. I figured that since it’s such a lightweight somewhat sheer liquid blush, it would wear away at least a little bit throughout the day. Also, Kiko doesn’t make a single claim about its wear-time.

Well surprise surprise, Kiko impressed me again with another product’s longevity! This blush never fades at all, no matter how long I wear it. Further proof of its staying power unexpectedly showed itself on the day that I did the arm swatches (see photo in the “Inclusivity” section).

After I took that photo, I immediately washed my arm hoping to remove the blush. I scrubbed it for I don’t know how long, and then washed it a couple more times before going to bed, and there was still a bit of a tint on my skin! You definitely don’t have to worry about this blush fading or smudging all day long.

Price

Kiko Milano is considered to be a “drugstore” brand, but some of its products’ prices fall somewhere between drugstore and high-end pricing. At $12.00, Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush is one of those, in my opinion. There aren’t many liquid blushes at the drugstore, but it looks like most of them range in price from $7-$10.

I also noticed that the amount of product in this Kiko blush is considerably less than some other drugstore alternatives. That is frustrating, but since I reach for powder blushes more often than cream or powder formulas, it doesn’t bother me too much. To be completely honest, there’s a good chance that I still won’t use up this blush before it goes bad.

Since Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush is more expensive than other drugstore liquid blushes, and it comes with less product, I took away a couple of points for price. I might’ve deducted more if I didn’t enjoy this product so much (especially the applicator, which the other drugstore brands don’t have!).

I am so glad that I took a chance and decided to try the Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush! It gives my cheeks beautiful natural looking color, with a touch of luminosity. My favorite thing of all though, is probably how easy this blush is to apply! That’s been something I look for lately. I really like products that I can apply quickly.

So how does my review stack up against Kiko’s product claims? The first claim is about the product’s texture, that it’s ultra-light to provide a delicate touch of color with a super luminous finish. I agree that it’s very lightweight and “delicate touch of color” is accurate since this isn’t a highly pigmented product. As far as its luminosity, I would say that this blush does have some luminosity, but it’s not “super luminous.”

Next, they mention the easy blending of this product, and that it’s buildable. I definitely agree with those claims! I don’t build up the color too much, but I will sometimes add a bit more blush when I feel like I didn’t get quite enough at first. It always looks great once it’s blended out! They mention the convenient applicator, which you already know I enjoy! Additionally, they add that it’s perfect “on holiday,” which for my American friends, means “on vacation.” I think this blush would be safe to travel with, as long as the cap is screwed on tightly! 🙂

This really is a great little blush, and I’d recommend it to almost anyone. There are only a couple of exceptions. Those with medium to deep skin tones might find that these blushes are too light or lacking sufficient pigmentation. People with oily skin may also want to pass on these as the formula is hydrating and doesn’t seem to fully “dry down.” I have combination skin, but my cheeks aren’t oily so I don’t have any trouble.

Do you think you would enjoy the Kiko Milano Fruit Explosion Juicy Blush? If you tend to like cream and/or liquid blushes, you’d probably like this one too! Please share your thoughts with me in the comments below.

e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer–Lightweight Moisturizer for Plumped Hydrated Skin

e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel MoisturizerMost of us want to take good care of our skin, but let’s face it, skincare products can be really expensive! That’s why I’m so happy to see e.l.f. continue to expand its skincare collections. E.l.f. has always been a very affordable makeup brand, and that’s carried through to their skincare products as well! One of e.l.f.’s most popular skincare collections is the Holy Hydration Collection. I believe this collection started with only one or two products, but as it’s grown in popularity, it’s also grown in size. Several new products have been added to this collection since its inception over a year ago. One of the most recent launches in this collection is the e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer.

Since I have combination skin, the Holy Hydration collection didn’t appeal to me for a very long time. I thought it would be too hydrating for my skin. Some of the newer products have tempted me, though! The e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer caught my attention the first time I heard about it because I tend to really enjoy gel or gel-cream moisturizers in my morning skincare routine. I was looking for a new morning moisturizer, and this one from e.l.f. seemed to be exactly what I was looking for.

I’ve been using e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer for close to a month now and I’ve got a lot of opinions to share. Please keep reading for a full product review. I’ll be sharing details on the product packaging, ease of application, hydration, how well it works with other products, ingredients, and price!

e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer product claims directly from ElfCosmetics.com

Plump up and moisturize your skin with lightweight, all-day hydration. This gel-based formula is infused with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and Peptides to hydrate skin to the fullest while supporting a bouncy, healthy-looking complexion. Packaging/ease of application

I don’t care about packaging as much with makeup products, but when it comes to skincare, packaging is important! Skincare ingredients that aren’t exposed to light or air are much more likely to remain effective. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, light and air cause many ingredients to degrade more quickly. For that reason, pumps are my preferred type of packaging for skincare products!

Since lightweight moisturizers often come in squeeze tubes or jars, I was pleasantly surprised to see that e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer comes in a pump. It’s a plastic pump, but it looks nice and is quite effective! It’s very easy to dispense just the right amount of moisturizer. It also comes with a cap that snaps on securely, making this product safe for travel.

One thing I always enjoy about gel or gel-cream moisturizers is the lightweight texture. I would classify this one as a gel-cream moisturizer and it applies similarly to others I’ve tried in the past, like the Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream. The lightweight texture really lends itself to easy application. E.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer smooths quickly and easily over the skin. Also, only a small amount is needed (at least for my combination skin), despite the lightweight texture.

Hydration

For my morning skincare routine, I look for moisturizers that are lightweight, but still provide a good amount of hydration. E.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer provides just the right amount of hydration without making skin feel greasy, or leaving residue behind. It helps my skin to feel lightly hydrated all day long.

In my opinion, this moisturizer is not quite hydrating enough for use at night. That is just my personal preference as someone with combination skin. For someone with oily skin, this may be perfect for use during the day and night.

After reading several short reviews of this product from people with dry skin, I unfortunately don’t think this moisturizer is quite hydrating enough for dry skin. I think other skin types would be very satisfied with the level of hydration e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer provides. I know I am!

Team player

You might’ve noticed that I took a couple of points away in this category. But what do I even mean by “team player?” This is where I rate how well a product layers with other products. E.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer layers extremely well over my other morning skincare products which usually include a toner, serum, and eye cream.

The problem comes in when I apply sunscreen over this moisturizer. Sometimes when I apply sunscreen after I’ve applied e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer I experience flaking. It’s very strange though, because it doesn’t happen every time. My best guess is that on the days my sunscreen gets flaky, I’ve probably used too much of the moisturizer.

I’m not too bothered by this problem since I don’t experience it every day. Also, it’s not severe pilling like I’ve experienced with some other skincare products. It’s pretty easy for me to take a fluffy brush and sweep away those sunscreen “flakes” before applying makeup.

Ingredients

You might be skeptical of e.l.f. skincare since e.l.f. used to only do makeup, or maybe because e.l.f. is such an affordable brand. Let me put you at ease. E.l.f. did its homework! I don’t think their formulas are revolutionary, but many of their products, including this one, include a lot of ingredients that skin loves. The ingredient list for e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer is quite long, with 40 ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Diisostearyl Malate, Jojoba Esters, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6 II, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Ceramide 1, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Phenoxyethanol, Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters, Lecithin, Xylitol, Tromethamine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Saccharide Isomerate, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Carbomer, Phytosphingosine, Polysorbate 20, Cholesterol, Geraniol, Linalool, Fragrance (Parfum)

When I research ingredients, I classify them as “good,” “neutral,” or “bad.” Good ingredients provide specific benefits to the skin, neutral ingredients neither benefit or harm the skin, and bad ingredients have the potential to be sensitizing. E.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer contains 17 “good,” 19 “neutral,” and 4 “bad” ingredients. Let’s start with brief descriptions of those “good” ingredients our skin loves!:

  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
    • Sodium form of hyaluronic acid (they work the same way)
    • Humectant
  • Ceramide 3 (aka Ceramide NP)
    • Protects skin barrier
    • Improves the look and feel of dry skin
  • Ceramide 6 II (aka Ceramide AP)
    • Protects skin barrier
    • Improves the look and feel of dry skin
  • Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1
    • Reduces deep eye wrinkles and increases collagen;
    • “Famous” peptide known as Matrixyl 3000 when coupled with Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (see below)
  • Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7
    • Reduces inflammation which slows degradation of collagen
  • Ceramide 1 (aka Ceramide EOP)
    • Protects skin barrier
    • Improves the look and feel of dry skin
  • Xylitylglucoside
    • Sugar-derived moisturizer
  • Anhydroxylitol
    • Sugar-derived moisturizer
  • Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters
    • Retains moisture in the skin
  • Lecithin
    • Water-binding agent
    • Skin-restoring
  • Xylitol
    • Moisturizing sugar
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil
    • Improves damaged or irritated skin barrier
    • Good for all skin types
  • Saccharide Isomerate
    • Plant-derived moisturizer
    • Binds to the skin longer than other moisturizing ingredients to keep the skin hydrated longer
  • Phytosphingosine
    • Water-binding agent
  • Cholesterol
    • Works with ceramides and fatty acids to maintain a healthy skin barrier and keep skin hydrated

Pretty impressive, right? All of these are excellent skincare ingredients. I’m most excited to see the two peptides since they are helpful for anti-aging, and also saccharide isomerate since it keeps skin hydrated longer than other hydrators. Paired with the humectants and other moisturizing ingredients, it’s no wonder this lightweight moisturizer is able to be so hydrating.

Next up are the “neutral” ingredients. There are a lot of these, but that’s OK since these ingredients won’t harm the skin. The “neutral” ingredients in this product are emollients, texture enhancers, preservatives, etc.

Lastly, the “bad” ingredients. This is always my least favorite part! The first one may come as a surprise. When I first saw this ingredient name, I thought it would fall into the “good” category! Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate is a molecularly smaller version of sodium hyaluronate; it penetrates skin well and may be able to moisturize deeper layers of skin than hyaluronic acid. However, it has the potential to cause inflammation due to its very small size.

The remaining “bad” ingredients stand out like sore thumbs. Geraniol is a common fragrance ingredient that smells like roses. It may cause sensitivity when applied to skin, but the risk is lower compared to some other fragrance ingredients because it doesn’t penetrate skin easily. Linalool, another fragrance ingredient, is a common skin-sensitizer. Lastly, fragrance (parfum), is an unknown fragrance blend that also has potential to be sensitizing.

Even though all three of the fragrance ingredients are at the bottom of the ingredients list, and therefore their concentrations are low, they make themselves known. The scent of this moisturizer is quite strong! I would advise anyone that is sensitive to fragrance to avoid this product.

Price

It comes as no surprise at all that e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer is very affordable! It’s priced at $12.00 for 1.76 oz., so it’s only $6.82/ounce! That’s extremely reasonable, even for a drugstore brand.

There are some moisturizers that can be purchased for less than $12.00, but I believe their formulas are quite simple (many of them also aren’t cruelty-free). This one doesn’t contain groundbreaking ingredients, but it definitely has some that you don’t see in every affordable moisturizer.

There isn’t much else to say about the price of this product, but I will make one more point. As I mentioned in the “team player” section, I was sometimes using too much of the moisturizer. A little goes a pretty long way with this moisturizer, so it’s a great value. At my current rate, I expect e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer to last me about four months total.

I’m happy to report that e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer has met, or maybe even surpassed, my expectations! I really appreciate how well it hydrates my skin and keeps it hydrated throughout the day. And the fact that e.l.f. used a pump to protect those great skincare ingredients is very exciting!

The primary claims for e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer are that it will plump up and moisturize skin with lightweight hydration that lasts all day. I agree with those claims! E.l.f. also claims that it’s ideal for daily wear on all skin types. That one, I disagree with since I’ve read multiple reviews from people with dry skin stating this product is not hydrating enough. It’s unfortunate that it doesn’t work better for those with dry skin, but it’s rare for individual skincare products to work for all skin types. I would recommend this moisturizer to anyone, except those with dry skin or fragrance sensitivity.

I purchased e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer myself, but e.l.f. did kindly send me some other products from the Holy Hydration collection recently. Once I’ve had a chance to test those, I’ll definitely be reviewing them as well!

Have you tried e.l.f. Holy Hydration Hydro-Gel Moisturizer or any other products from the Holy Hydration collection? I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially since I’ll soon be trying out more products from the collection. Please comment below!

e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick–for a Dewy Skin Look

e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow StickSummer is in full swing and the coveted “dewy look” or “glass skin effect” is more popular than ever. I have usually avoided products that are meant to look very dewy since I have combination skin and my t-zone can get quite oily. However, e.l.f. launched a “dewy skin” product this year that caught my eye like nothing else. The e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick is a stick highlighter that provides a beautiful natural looking dewiness. I like it for my skin because I can concentrate it on areas of my skin that don’t get oily!

This is the first highlighter I’ve ever reviewed (with the exception of the highlighter shade in the Aether Beauty Rose Quartz Crystal Charged Cheek Palette) here on IntegriBeauty. That’s because I’m not usually much of a highlighter girl. That may surprise you, as I’m a makeup fanatic, but it’s true! The natural look of this highlighter made an impression on me and I couldn’t wait to try it.

I’ve been using the e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick for a few weeks now, and I have a lot of thoughts on it! Please continue reading for my full product review. I’ll discuss the product’s inclusivity, packaging, application, how it works with other products, staying power, and price.

Highlight your best features with a dewy, sun-kissed glow. Infused with hydrating watermelon extract, this highlighter stick helps you achieve that “glass skin” effect with a soft hint of golden color and shimmer that looks great on all skin tones. The twist-up stick allows for easy application and prime blendability—just dab and blend onto high points of the face like the cheekbones, nose bridge, and brow bone for a radiant finish. Great for all skin types.

Inclusivity

Before trying the e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick, I was surprised that it launched in only one shade (which is called “Melon-Aire”). E.l.f. isn’t the most inclusive brand, but I think they’re making an effort. With this product, I was a bit confused because to look at it in the packaging, especially in photos, it appears icy white.

Once I received my Jelly Pop Glow Stick and swatched it, I understood why there is only a single shade. This is truly unlike any other highlighter I’ve ever tried. What you see on the skin is a natural glow, that dewy effect that so many of us are after. There is a subtle gold-pink shimmer, but it’s barely visible on the skin.

It’s very unusual for products with any pigment to work for all skin tones, and that’s part of the reason I was skeptical with this one. However, e.l.f. claims that the Jelly Pop Glow Stick shade is universal to look great on all skin tones. I’m happy to say that I think they’re right!

I’d ordinarily take a couple points from this category for the lack of variety in shade options, but I feel like this product is different. Since it’s primarily meant to provide a natural glow instead of pigmentation, I don’t think other shades are necessary. If this product is popular enough, e.l.f. may opt to add more shades later. However, I think they would end up looking quite similar to the “Melon-Aire” shade.

Jelly Pop Glow Stick swatchUnfortunately, I was unable to get a very good photo of this product swatched on my fair skin. It definitely looks better in person or in videos and to be completely honest, I’m not sure how to insert video clips into my blog posts. In this photo, I applied a good amount of the glow stick to my arm. If you look closely, I think you can see it! If you don’t, please don’t be discouraged. This product works best with movement and light.

Packaging/ease of application

E.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick is packaged in a twist-up stick. I’ve been seeing this format more and more for cream products, and I think it’s brilliant! This type of packaging allows for direct application onto the skin, but other application methods can still be used just as easily as if it was in a flat pan.

The plastic packaging for this product isn’t anything fancy, but it’s highly functional. It’s easy to twist up the product, and the cap snaps into place securely. This product would be a good choice for travel, unless it will be exposed to high temperatures. I say that because this product is very soft and emollient, and therefore more likely to melt in extreme heat.

E.l.f.’s instructions for applying the Jelly Pop Glow Stick are as follows: Dab lightly onto high points of the face including the cheekbones, nose bridge, and brow bone. Blend gently with fingers or brush.

I started out using it that way, but I thought the stick laid down too much product when I swiped it over my skin. I then tried picking up the product with a brush and applying it that way, but that moved my makeup around a lot and didn’t look good.

The best way I’ve found to apply this glow stick (I hesitate to call it a highlighter since it’s so unique and different from other highlighters I’ve used), is with my fingers. I pick some up on my fingertip and tap it over the areas that I want to look dewy. This method prevents excessive use of the product, and I think the heat from my fingers helps it to melt into my skin more quickly.

This is definitely one of the quickest and easiest makeup products in my collection. A few taps over each area is enough to achieve the subtle glow that I want!

One quick side note before moving on… E.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick is heavily fragranced. In addition to the watermelon fruit extract (which actually isn’t harmful to the skin despite smelling like watermelon), there are five fragrance ingredients! Those that are sensitive to fragrance would probably be better off avoiding this product. I wish there wasn’t so much fragrance (or any) included, but I have to admit that it smells fantastic!

Team player

If you saw the product details above, you probably noticed that this is the one category where e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick scored badly with me. I’ve always had a tough time getting cream products to layer well over powder, liquid, and cream foundations. This one is no exception, and I wasn’t surprised due to its very emollient texture. It seems to move my foundation around no matter which type of foundation I use. I don’t think it’s very noticeable from a distance, but it still bothers me.

I looked for reviews of this product on YouTube and didn’t find too many, but there were some. Those people reviewing it didn’t seem to have any issues with applying it over foundation, even directly from the stick. That makes me wonder if there’s something about my skin, or my foundations, that could be the problem. Or maybe it’s simply user error!

While I do struggle with layering e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick over foundations, I’m still able to use it and enjoy it very much. That’s because I don’t wear foundation every day! My Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Sunscreen doubles as a light-coverage BB cream, and once it sets, this glow stick applies over it extremely well!

Staying power

Cream products generally aren’t designed with longevity in mind. It wasn’t surprising to me that e.l.f. doesn’t make any claims about the wear-time of the Jelly Pop Glow Stick. With that being said, I’ve actually been quite impressed with the staying power of this product! It’s not as obvious in indoor lighting, but I can still see a subtle sheen on my face at the end of the day. I thought my skin might absorb too much of it throughout the day for it to be visible after several hours, but that isn’t the case at all.

I did take one point away in this category for a very simple reason. This product doesn’t have any sort of “dry down” like some creams do. It remains emollient on the skin all day. That means that it could be rubbed off if you touch your face a lot, or take a nap with your face touching furniture or a pillow. I haven’t experienced this myself, but I can tell that it’s possible just based on the texture of this glow stick.

Price

E.l.f. never ceases to amaze me with its affordable prices, and they came through for us again with the Jelly Pop Glow Stick! This product is only $8.00 for 0.28 oz., which is a generous amount! I think this product will last a good long while for anyone not using an excessive amount.

I wasn’t sure how similar products are priced since I don’t often buy highlighters, so I did some digging. It turns out, the humble e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick looks very similar to the $45.00 (and not cruelty-free) Chanel Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick! I couldn’t imagine spending that much money on this type of product. I’m so glad that e.l.f. made this much more affordable alternative!

The Chanel glow stick is obviously a luxury product and there are other stick highlighters out there that are affordable. There are some that are even a little bit more affordable than this one from e.l.f. However, it doesn’t look like those give the same subtle effect. I think the e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick is pretty special and definitely fairly priced! 🙂

e.l.f. Jelly Pop collection

E.l.f. initially launched the Jelly Pop collection a couple of years ago. Since then, some products have been discontinued, occasionally to be brought back on a temporary basis. I believe some new Jelly Pop products launched in 2020, and this year e.l.f. continued the collection with the Jelly Pop Glow Stick, as well as some other products (these are the ones currently marked as “new” on the e.l.f. website):

I’ve only tried the Glow Stick from this collection, but I’ve heard good things about several of the Jelly Pop products! They all seem to be fun and fruity.

While I am a bit limited in my use of this product since I don’t wear it with foundation, I am really happy to have the e.l.f. Jelly Pop Glow Stick in my collection! I don’t own anything even remotely similar to this product, so it’s been very fun to test out. I think it just gives my skin the prettiest glowy sheen, especially in sunlight. In this photo, all of the dewiness on my cheekbone and forehead is from the Glow Stick. 🙂

Let’s review e.l.f.’s product claims to see how they align with my experience using the Jelly Pop Glow Stick. E.l.f.’s primary claim is that this product will provide a dewy “glass skin” effect that will look good on all skin tones. I agree completely! Next, they claim that the twist-up stick allows for easy application and blending. I don’t think applying directly with the stick is the best method, but it can work. Also, they’re right that it’s very easy to blend!

Lastly, e.l.f. states that the Glow Stick is great for all skin types. I wish I could agree, but I think it might be too emollient for use on oily skin. I can get away with it because my skin is normal in the areas where I use the Glow Stick, but I think it may be too greasy for oily skin. If you’ve used this and have oily skin, please let me know what you think!

Have you tried anything from the e.l.f. Jelly Pop collection? What about other subtle stick highlighters? Let me know in the comments!

Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm–Wildcrafted Ingredients Address Skin Concerns Naturally

Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye BalmI am not normally a “luxury beauty” consumer, both because I’m on a budget and also because I know affordable products usually work just as well as luxury. There are occasionally exceptions when certain products really catch my eye. Last year, I discovered Alpyn Beauty and everything about the brand and its products stood out to me. The product that intrigued me most, due to its bold claims, was Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm.

Eye creams aren’t absolutely necessary, but I enjoy that extra step in my morning and night time skincare routines. I have combination skin with an oily t-zone, however, the skin under my eyes can sometimes look dry. I also have some darkness under my eyes, fine lines, and sometimes puffiness. Since I have those skin concerns that are specific to the under-eye area, I feel that it’s beneficial to use products designed to be gentle and improve the appearance of the under-eyes.

This vegan brand is unique and not very well-known, so I’ll tell you a little bit about it. Alpyn Beauty sustainably sources organic wild botanical ingredients from the mountains in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The ingredients used in Alpyn Beauty products are backed by science to preserve, protect, and strengthen skin. Alpyn Beauty is also a member of 1% for the Planet, which means the company donates 1% of all sales to environmental causes!

Please continue reading for my full review of Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm. I’ll be discussing packaging, ease of application, hydration, how well this product works in tandem with other skincare, ingredients, and price.

Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm product claims directly from AlpynBeauty.com

This ultra-moisturizing, under eye treatment applies like a cream but behaves like a balm—instantly filling in the look of fine lines. Vitamin C, licorice root and bearberry leaf brighten the look of dark circles, while bakuchiol smooths and firms. Caffeine kicks in by reducing the appearance of puffiness for a well-rested look.

Packaging/ease of application

Like many eye creams, Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm is packaged in a jar. More specifically, it comes in a clear glass jar with a plastic lid. The glass is nice because it feels heavy and luxurious, and it’s recyclable, but a jar is not the ideal packaging for this product.

That’s because there are several active ingredients that are sensitive to light and air. Since this jar is translucent, light is able to reach the product all the time unless it’s stored in a dark area. Additionally, every time the jar is opened, the product is exposed to air! Unfortunately, this means that the ingredients in this product will degrade more quickly than they would if the product was packaged differently.

So why use a jar, then? I assume this eye balm was packaged in a jar because of its thick texture. I think it is definitely too thick for a squeeze tube, which is another common type of packaging for eye creams. A small opaque pump may be the ideal packaging for this product, though that would likely result in more waste, which goes against Alpyn Beauty’s ethos.

You may be wondering why this product is called an “eye balm” instead of an “eye cream.” It’s because of this product’s thick texture. It does feel more like a balm than a standard eye cream when first picked up on the fingers. That concerned me at first, but I quickly learned to enjoy the texture.

While this eye balm feels very heavy at first, it quickly melts into the skin. I think the heat from the skin literally causes it to melt. As it is gently blended into the skin, it also absorbs quickly. I find that this eye balm is very easy to apply as long as I don’t pick up too much. It’s best to start with a very small amount and add more as needed, since the formula is so thick and emollient.

Hydration

I think Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm may just be the most hydrating eye cream I’ve ever used. Granted, many of the “eye creams” I’ve used have been more of a lightweight gel texture. It really is very hydrating though, I have to give it credit!

It doesn’t feel quite as occlusive as Versed The Fix Emergency Eye Mask, but overall I believe it provides more hydration to the skin. One of the things I like best about this Alpyn Beauty product is that it feels so hydrating, yet it doesn’t feel greasy once it’s absorbed into the skin. I think this eye balm would work well for all skin types! The skin around my eyes is usually normal, but I believe this eye balm is hydrating enough for dry skin and absorbs enough to work for normal to oily skin!

Team player

A concern with any thick emollient eye cream (or in this case “eye balm”) is that it will cause makeup to move around, or sometimes even pill with other products. I apply Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm right before moisturizer in both my morning and nighttime skincare routines.

In the morning, I find that this eye balm applies well over my other skincare products. After applying the eye balm, my moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup applies just fine over it! I really was unsure if I’d be able to use it during the day because I thought its thick formula might not work under makeup. I didn’t need to be worried at all, and I enjoy getting that boost of hydration under my eyes before applying makeup.

The experience with this eye balm at night is much the same. It applies smoothly over my other skincare products. I usually will use a heavier moisturizer at night, and those apply well over this eye balm, too! I’m very happy to report that I don’t have any problems using any other products alongside Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm.

Ingredients

Alpyn Beauty is a clean beauty brand that emphasizes ingredients, so I knew their ingredients would be very interesting. Some of them surprised me, and many were very unique ones I’d never seen before! Some clean beauty brands put a limit on the number of ingredients in their formulations, but Alpyn Beauty isn’t one of those. Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm contains 40 ingredients! Here’s the full list:

water, sodium hyaluronate, cetearyl alcohol, squalane, coconut alkanes, glycerin, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, coco-caprylate/caprate, mica, titanium dioxide, bakuchiol, centella asiatica meristem cell culture, xanthan gum, euphrasia officinalis extract, cetearyl glucoside, sorbitan stearate, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol, linoleic acid, cetyl hydroxyethylcellulose, caffeine, tripeptide-29, potassium sorbate, hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate, kappaphycus alvarezii extract, caesalpinia spinosa fruit extract, tocopherol, tin oxide, caesalpinia sappan bark extract, glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, arctostaphylos uva ursi (bearberry) leaf extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin c), ceramide ng, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf extract, arnica montana (arnica) flower extract, borago officinalis (borage) flower extract, calendula officinalis (calendula) flower extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract

The breakdown of ingredients for this product is pretty good! I split them into three categories. There are 20 (that’s half!) “good” ingredients that provide skincare benefits. Next, there are 17 “neutral” ingredients that neither benefit or harm the skin. Lastly, there are three “bad” ingredients that have the potential to harm skin. I’ll start with brief descriptions of those good skincare ingredients I mentioned!:

  • Sodium hyaluronate
    • Sodium form of hyaluronic acid (they work the same way)
    • Humectant
  • Squalane
    • Moisturizer found naturally in certain fish, plants, and human skin (in this case, it’s sourced from plants)
  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract
    • Moisturizing and smoothing
    • Acids (like malic and gallic acids) provide mild exfoliation, skin brightening, and antibacterial properties
  • Bakuchiol
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Antioxidant
    • Performs similarly to retinol for anti-aging by promoting collagen production and decreasing a collagen-attacking enzyme in the skin
      • No side effects like retinol sometimes has
      • Can be used with retinol
  • Centella asiatica meristem cell culture
    • Antioxidant
  • Linoleic acid
    • Omega-6 fatty acid
    • Very important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier
    • Lightens hyperpigmentation
  • Tripeptide-29
    • Small peptide that may trick the skin into thinking new collagen is needed, and therefore increasing collagen synthesis
  • Kappaphycus alvarezii extract
    • Red algae extract

The first two ingredients (which have the highest concentration) in this eye balm are water and sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is a common skincare ingredient, but not usually in such a high concentration. As a humectant, sodium hyaluronate will hold that water in the skin to improve its hydration. That hydration often has a bonus plumping effect to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Many of the other beneficial skincare ingredients listed here are also quite impressive, but I was most intrigued by bakuchiol. Of all the skincare products I’ve tried, this is the first one that contains this trendy ingredient! There is some disagreement in the skincare community about the efficacy of bakuchiol vs. retinol, but it sounds very promising.

I could go on and on about some of these other great skincare ingredients too, but I don’t want to bore you! Next up are the “neutral” ingredients. These are much simpler ingredients that are important to the efficacy and preservation of the formula, but don’t provide direct benefit to the skin.

The “neutral” ingredients in this product act as solvents, emollients, thickeners, colorants, preservatives, and more. One ingredient of interest in this category, that’s much different from the others, is caffeine. I labeled it as a “neutral” ingredient because while it may have soothing and antioxidant properties, it can also be sensitizing. The level of risk with this ingredient seems to be reasonably low.

That leaves only three more ingredients, and they’re the “bad” ones I mentioned earlier. The most common ingredients in this category are fragrance ingredients, but fortunately this eye balm is free of both artificial and natural fragrances.

The first problem ingredient is euphrasia officinalis extract which is a multipurpose ingredient that was included for its antimicrobial, astringent, emollient, and soothing properties. Unfortunately, its tannin content may aggravate skin. Next up is hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate, a molecularly smaller version of sodium hyaluronate. While it penetrates skin well and may be able to moisturize deeply, its small size means it has potential to cause irritation. The final problem ingredient is arnica montana flower extract. Some sources believe it has an anti-inflammatory property, but it can cause skin irritation. Fortunately, the hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate and arnica montana flower extract are in the bottom half of the list, and should therefore have very low concentrations.

Looking at all of the ingredients in Alpyn Beauty eye balm, I’d say the pros definitely outweigh the cons. I’m very impressed by the variety of outstanding ingredients used in this formulation. The three problem ingredients may be problematic for some with very sensitive skin, but I do not experience any irritation myself.

Price

I normally only spend about $20.00 or less on eye creams. When I saw that Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm is $62.00, I admit that I was a bit shocked! This eye balm contains a standard amount of product for an eye cream, 0.5 ounce (14 ml) which means it is $124.00/ounce. This product is definitely not in my normal price range, but I was fortunate to receive it as a Christmas gift from my husband because he knew how much I wanted to try it.

Fortunately, a little goes a long way with this eye balm. I’ve been using it for a month now and it barely looks like I’ve used any. That’s saying something since I use this eye balm both morning and night! At this rate, I estimate that this product will last me at least a few months (would be six months or more if I only used it once a day).

While I think this eye balm is a really beautiful product inside and out, I don’t think I could justify purchasing it on a regular basis. Someone that is comfortable spending $62.00 on individual skincare products would likely feel differently. I’m quite frugal with most of my beauty purchases, so that’s the perspective I’m using to evaluate the price of Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm.

Alpyn Beauty eye balmI’m very skeptical of skincare products in general, but especially ones that are pricey and make bold claims. Like this one! I’ve got to say though, Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm is one of very few products that instantly impressed me upon the very first application. The texture is absolutely perfect, it feels incredible on the skin, and I did think my fine lines looked less noticeable right after application. I don’t really notice a difference in the appearance of my fine lines once I have makeup applied, but on no-makeup days, my under-eyes do look better with this eye balm applied.

With every product review I write, I like to look back at product claims once I’ve had a chance to thoroughly evaluate every aspect of the product in question. Alpyn Beauty makes several claims about this eye balm. The description states that it is ultra-moisturizing, instantly fills in fine lines, brightens dark circles, smooths, firms, and reduces puffiness.

I definitely agree that the formula is highly moisturizing and appears to fill in fine lines. It may also brighten dark circles a bit, but I think that has more to do with the mica that adds a slight shimmer, rather than anything lasting. I think it might also help to reduce puffiness. As far as smoothing and firming, I haven’t seen those effects yet. It’s likely that those are more long-term effects that would come from using this product for an extended period of time.

I genuinely think that almost everyone would enjoy Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm. The texture and overall experience of this product are so pleasant, and the hydration it provides would be lovely for most, if not all, skin types. Those with very oily under-eyes are probably the one exception.

Have you tried this eye balm or any other skincare products from Alpyn Beauty? The brand’s range of products is small, but impressive. Please comment below with any thoughts you have on this product. 🙂
