Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA–for Gentle Exfoliation of Rough Dry Skin

Skin all over the body tends to get rough, dry, and itchy during colder months when the air is extra dry. I know mine has! Body scrubs like Pacifica Sugared Crystal Supercharged Body Scrub use sugar or a variety of other physical exfoliators to smooth and soften skin, but they may be too harsh for some people. A gentler and more thorough approach to exfoliation is to use chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid which increase the rate of skin cell turnover by loosening the bonds between skin cells.

A few months ago, I reviewed the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant which is a very Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHAeffective facial exfoliator. Paula’s Choice doesn’t only make chemical exfoliant products for the face though; they also have a couple for the body! Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA has the same active ingredient as the 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant, salicylic acid. I feel fortunate that Paula’s Choice sent the Weightless Body Treatment to me as a free gift with some skincare products that I ordered, because if they hadn’t I probably wouldn’t even know this product existed!

Importance of sun protection with chemical exfoliants

Please remember that it’s very important to wear sufficient sun protection when using exfoliants on the face or body. When you have a layer of dead skin cells on top of your fresh new skin, that layer provides some sun protection. Once that layer is exfoliated away, the new outer layer of skin is more sensitive to the sun, and more likely to burn.

Product claims directly from

This leave-on body exfoliant with 2% BHA, also known as salicylic acid, gently exfoliates built-up layers of dead skin to reveal the radiant, smooth skin hiding underneath. Works from the first application to visibly make rough, dry skin a thing of the past. Ongoing use banishes dullness and promotes resilient skin that’s touchably soft and ultimately smooth. This is a customer favorite, suitable even for skin prone to keratosis pilaris.

  • 2% salicylic acid softens and refines rough skin
  • Antioxidants safeguard skin and keep it healthy
  • Silky lightweight lotion feels beautiful on skin
  • Ideal for hard, clogged pores on the arms and legs

Packaging/ease of application

Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA is packaged in a tall opaque squeeze tube with a small opening. This type of packaging is fairly effective for protecting the actives (salicylic acid and antioxidant ingredients) from degradation due to exposure to light and air. The squeeze tube also makes it easy to dispense the proper amount of product.

The product itself is very easy to use. Its formula is lightweight, as implied by the name, and smooths easily over the skin. I’ve also found that I don’t need as much of this type of product compared to most lotions or other body moisturizers.

When I use this body treatment, I use it alone. However, since it is a lightweight formula, I believe that any type of moisturizer could be applied over it without any problems. The instructions from Paula’s Choice state that this body treatment should be applied first if using with a moisturizer. I think that’s very important for proper absorption of the active ingredients in this product.

My favorite type of chemical exfoliant is salicylic acid, which is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). I’m happy that salicylic acid is also the magic ingredient in this body treatment from Paula’s Choice! I was hopeful that this product would be as effective for exfoliation on the body as the 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant is for the face, since they contain the same concentration of salicylic acid. I was not disappointed!

I apply this body treatment on nights that I feel like my skin needs something extra, like moisturizer isn’t going to cut it. I primarily use it on my arms, legs, and hips since those are the areas that get the most dry on my body. When I wake up the next morning after applying this body treatment, my skin feels very smooth and lightly hydrated.

My favorite use for this product is on my arms because I think I have a mild case of keratosis pilaris (KP) which causes me to get little red bumps on my arms. Since this body treatment exfoliates away dead skin cells, it smooths those bumps and makes the skin on my arms look much more healthy. Body scrubs can also help with this problem, but I think chemical exfoliation is more effective.

Greasy body products don’t bother me as much as a greasy hand cream, but in general I prefer my products to be non-greasy. If a product is non-greasy, that usually means that it’s quick to apply and absorbs quickly.

Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA may look very similar to a body lotion (most of which are at least a little bit greasy), but it feels very different. As I mentioned previously, this product is very lightweight. It’s thin and not at all greasy! This body treatment smooths over my skin quickly and absorbs within a couple of minutes so I don’t feel like I’m getting it all over my pajamas or clothes when I get dressed.

It’s clear that Paula’s Choice put a lot of thought into the texture of this product. The ingredient list reflects this! I’ll go into a little more detail about that in the next section.

I was expecting to see quite a bit of similarity between the ingredient list for the Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA and 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant, but they are actually quite different! Of course this is a body product instead of a face product, but they perform the same basic function. The textures of each of the formulas are vastly different, however, and I think that’s probably why the ingredient lists aren’t more similar.

Water, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Alcohol, PPG-14 Butyl Ether, Salicylic Acid, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem (Willowherb) Extract, Camellia Oleifera (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Bisabolol, Allantoin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethiconol, PEG-40 Stearate, Sorbitan Stearate, PVM/MA Decadiene Crosspolymer, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Hexylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol

This looks like a pretty scary list of ingredients, but they’re actually all either good skin-loving ingredients, or “neutral” ingredients that support the formula. There isn’t a single “bad” ingredient in this product! I’ll provide information on the standout ingredients below (please note that my primary resources for ingredient information are INCI Decoder and Paula’s Choice Ingredient Dictionary):

  • PPG-14 butyl ether
    • Skin-replenishing
    • Improves the appearance of dry or damaged skin
  • Salicylic acid
    • Beta hydroxy acid (exfoliant)
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Tocopheryl acetate
    • Most common form of vitamin E
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin
  • Chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Potent skin-soothing property
    • May aggravate skin that is sensitive to plants in the daisy family
  • Epilobium angustifolium (willowherb) extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Skin-soothing
  • Camellia oleifera (green tea) leaf extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Vanilla planifolia fruit extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Skin-soothing
  • Bisabolol
    • Skin-soothing
  • Allantoin
    • Skin-soothing

Some of these ingredients may seem a bit redundant, but I’m glad to see so many soothing ingredients paired with salicylic acid. Chemical exfoliants can be irritating to sensitive skin or skin that hasn’t had time to adjust to the exfoliating ingredients. Skin on the body usually isn’t as sensitive as skin on the face so I don’t think most people would experience any irritation, but it’s good that Paula’s Choice took the precaution of adding those soothing ingredients to keep skin calm. Since chamomile is known for being such a soothing ingredient, I was surprised to see that it has the potential to aggravate skin. Fortunately, that only applies to people that are sensitive to plants in the daisy family.

The other twenty are a wide variety of “neutral” ingredients such as emulsifiers, thickeners, other texture enhancers, and preservatives. The vast majority contribute to the texture of the formula to make it feel smooth and absorb quickly. The main ingredients responsible for the texture of this formula are the four silicones (dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, and dimethiconol), PVM/MA decadiene crosspolymer (creates a gel consistency), polyacrylamide, C13-14 isoparaffin, and Laureth-7 (this ingredient works with the previous two to create a non-tacky gel formula).

I think it’s so interesting learning about the ingredients that work together to make a product work. Overall I’m very pleased with the ingredients used in this body treatment! I’d be even happier if the percentage of “good” (versus “neutral”) was higher, but honestly in this case I don’t think it’s a problem. All of the standout ingredients that I outlined in the bullet points above are in the first half of the list, and six of them are in the top ten! That’s great news since the ingredients closest to the top have the highest concentrations.

My perspective on the $28.00 price of this body treatment varies depending on how it’s being used. For someone like me that uses it as needed instead of daily, I think it’s worth it because it’s lasted me a long time. On the other hand, people that want to use it daily will probably run through a tube rather quickly. I wouldn’t pay $28.00 for this if I planned to use it daily because I’d probably run through it in about a month. That’s just my opinion, though. Everyone has a unique perspective and budget.

This product is definitely effective and a great solution for those in need of gentle exfoliation. I’m only taking two points away in this category since I do think the price is fair for those looking for an “as needed” body treatment for especially dry or bumpy skin.

I am very happy to have Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA in my body care collection, especially this time of year when my skin needs a little extra help. I think I only use it about once a week, but my skin always thanks me when I do!

I think this product would be great for anyone that struggles with very dry or rough bumpy skin. The only exceptions would be people with very sensitive skin. Anyone with sensitivity to plants in the daisy family definitely should avoid this product. Everyone else, I suggest you get your paws on this product ASAP! Your skin will thank you. 🙂

Have you ever tried body care products from Paula’s Choice? Paula’s Choice has such a huge range of products, their body care is often overlooked and definitely underrated!

SmartyPits Super-Strength Aluminum Free Deodorant–Control Armpit Odor with Baking Soda AND Arrowroot Powder

Genetics, activity level, diet, environment, and age can all impact which products will and will not work for us. The search for the “perfect” natural deodorant can be discouraging. Natural deodorants are definitely one of the most difficult products to shop for. It’s common for people to try multiple different brands and/or scents before finding one that works well to control armpit odor and wetness.

Some people may struggle more than others with the quest to find the right natural deodorant, if they have sensitive skin or if they sweat excessively. I’m in the second group. I used to sweat a lot even when I used to use antiperspirant deodorants, so as you can imagine, it hasn’t been easy for me to find a natural deodorant that helps me to feel comfortable and dry. I previously reviewed Pacifica Coconut Cream Clean Deodorant, and it was better than nothing for controlling armpit odor and wetness, but I needed something stronger. When I was almost finished working through that deodorant a couple of months ago, I started a long search for a product that would work better for my needs. After a few weeks of weeding through reviews for a SmartyPits Super-Strength Aluminum Free Deodorantwide variety of cruelty-free natural deodorants, I settled on a trial size set of SmartyPits Super-Strength Aluminum Free Deodorant. I’d never heard of SmartyPits, but their “super-strength” formula caught my eye because the first two ingredients are arrowroot powder and baking soda. I need those absorbent ingredients to help me feel dry throughout the day.

It’s a better value to buy the full-size SmartyPits deodorants, but I went with the trial size set because I couldn’t choose a scent and knew that some scents may not work with my body’s chemistry as well as others. I really appreciate that SmartyPits offers the trial size set for those of us that are unsure of which scent may work best. The smaller trial size deodorants would also be perfect for travel. The trial size set includes four 0.5 oz. deodorants in Coconut Mango, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Tweed + Spice, and Cool Cucumber. I was very surprised to find that my favorite scent of the four is Cool Cucumber!

Before I get into the review of this product, I’d like to tell you one reason I chose SmartyPits. The company donates $0.30 from every full-size deodorant to City of Hope for their breast cancer research and education. They’ve also donated 10,000+ sticks of deodorant to breast cancer warriors and survivors. I love supporting companies that give back!

If you’ve never used a natural deodorant before and don’t have generally sensitive skin, our standard formula is a great place to start. Baking soda is one of the strongest odor-fighters out there which is why we call our standard formula Super Strength! This is our best-selling product that helps you stay odor-free all day from a single application.

By studying the biological causes of body odor, we’ve developed a formulation that attacks the root cause on three levels:

  • A blend of vegetable based powders and oils help to absorb & wick away wetness, separating it from your skin with a moisturizing barrier
  • Mineral ingredients like baking soda neutralize the environment where the odor-causing bacteria thrives
  • Prebiotics (plant-based food for good bacteria) contribute to the biodiversity & strength of your skin microbiome

Packaging/ease of application

Most of the SmartyPits deodorants are packaged in traditional plastic packaging that looks just like most deodorants ( offers a sustainable plastic-free option for some scents). I like this type of packaging just fine. I don’t feel strongly about it except for the fact that it prevents me from having to touch the product with my hands. Some natural deodorants are packaged in jars and the product must be scooped out and applied by hand. Something about that idea weirds me out!

The formula of this deodorant unfortunately makes it a bit difficult to apply. When you open a fresh tube, it looks creamy and smooth like most deodorants. It is creamy, but for some reason it balls up every time I apply it. I have to be careful to apply it over the sink because sometimes a little bit will fall off. It helps if I use light pressure and only apply a small amount. To clean up the balled up bits from my underarms, I press the stick over those areas and it picks up that excess product to be used later. I find this to be more of an inconvenience and it doesn’t detract from me wanting to continue using this product.

Odor prevention

This deodorant does the best job of all the natural deodorants I’ve tried so far, at preventing odor. I’m unfortunately one to get stinky pretty quickly, especially in stressful situations. Working from home, I don’t have as many stressful days, but it still happens from time to time and I need good odor protection.

The reason I took a couple of points away in this category is that even though this product generally does a good job of keeping odors at bay, I do often notice that I start to smell bad around late afternoon. If I reapply, the scents I’ve tried do a good job of masking the odor.

I don’t fault this deodorant too much for its slightly insufficient odor prevention because I honestly think this has something to do with my body’s unique chemistry. I know a lot of people don’t have sweat that smells as much as mine does.

I apply this deodorant every morning and evening, and doing that seems to help keep me smelling fresh most of the time. The formula is not irritating to my skin, so I can reapply more often as needed.

Sweat absorption

In addition to odor prevention, this deodorant is also the best I’ve tried for sweat absorption/wicking. I notice a big difference between this product and others I’ve tried. This formula is very absorbent, thanks to the arrowroot powder and baking soda! A lot of deodorants don’t contain baking soda because that ingredient can be irritating to sensitive skin, but it is very effective at absorbing moisture (and also preventing odor) so I always look for it in new formulas.

I just started using this SmartyPits deodorant in November so I can’t say how effective it will be in warmer months, but so far it’s been keeping me dry almost all day most days. I only notice that I’m sweating if I’m up doing housework or exercising. All natural deodorants have a limit since they don’t actually prevent sweating like antiperspirants do, but this one is very effective at absorbing sweat and wicking it away from the skin.

I was impressed that Pacifica’s deodorant only had 14 ingredients, but SmartyPits Super-Strength deodorants only have nine!

Arrowroot Powder, Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Beeswax, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Fractionated Coconut Oil), Hydrogenated Avocado Oil (Avocado Butter), Coconut Oil, Fragrance, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Inulin

This ingredients list consists of a good mix of neutral ingredients that support the formula, as well as some really good ingredients that have unique benefits:

  • Hydrogenated avocado oil
    • Deeply penetrating oil that moisturizes the skin
    • Rich in vitamins and fatty acids
  • Coconut oil
    • Moisturizes and seals in moisture
    • Provides a solid foundation for the formula
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Inulin
    • Natural prebiotic (reduces growth of bad bacteria while promoting good bacteria)

A lot of natural deodorants have moisturizing ingredients, but I was intrigued by the inulin. I don’t believe any of the natural deodorants I’ve tried in the past have contained any sort of prebiotic, but I think it’s brilliant that SmartyPits chose to include that ingredient! The inulin probably contributes a lot to the odor prevention property of this formula.

I labelled the arrowroot powder and baking soda as “neutral” ingredients in this formula, but they are actually really important. As I mentioned previously, these are absorbent ingredients. The other neutral ingredients are emollients which make the deodorant have a creamy texture.

The one and only “bad” ingredient in this deodorant is the fragrance. SmartyPits doesn’t disclose what the fragrance is, but some of the fragrances used may be irritating for those with sensitive skin. Fortunately, there is an unscented option! Because of that, I didn’t deduct any points from this rating category.

Natural deodorants unfortunately tend to be more expensive than conventional antiperspirant deodorants. SmartyPits deodorants are priced consistently with most other brands that I’ve researched. There are certainly many that are more expensive, but it’s rare to see one that is less expensive than this one priced at $11.99. I think SmartyPits priced this deodorant especially well considering how effective it is (at least for me it is), the quality of the ingredients, and the company’s values.

While I don’t think SmartyPits Super-Strength Aluminum Free Deodorant is my “perfect” deodorant, it’s definitely a great product, and one that will be difficult to beat! I am undecided on if I will order any of the full size sticks of this deodorant, but I am leaning toward “yes.” 🙂

SmartyPits is a wonderful company to support and it seems like they have an option for everyone! Their Super-Strength formula is perfect for people like me that sweat a lot, but SmartyPits also offers a sensitive skin formula that is made without baking soda (as well as fragrance free options in both Super-Strength and Sensitive). There are also teen deodorants that have unique fragrances (and are a bit smaller and less expensive), trial sizes (sold individually or as sets on, “Ultra Smooth & Sensitive” deodorant creams in jars, and foot deodorants.

Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash–Refresh Skin & Banish Bacteria

If you’ve read my previous skincare and body care product reviews, you probably know I’m not the biggest fan of most essential oils because they can sensitize the skin. Essential oils are usually added to beauty products as natural fragrances, but that is not true for all of them. Tea tree oil is a unique essential oil because while it can be sensitizing if a high concentration is applied to the skin, in smaller amounts it can be quite beneficial. It is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, and is also good for treating acne. Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash

Tea tree oil can be found in a variety of products. It is especially popular as a natural option for treating acne and other skin concerns. I am fortunate that I no longer get blemishes on my skin very often, but I still enjoy using some tea tree oil products for their antibacterial property. I’m currently using Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash. My skin always feels extra refreshed thanks to the peppermint scent, and I enjoy knowing that the tea tree oil will banish bacteria so I can feel extra squeaky clean.

Packaging/ease of application

Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash is packaged in a very attractive bottle with a pump. It looks so nice in my shower and the pump works great. I vastly prefer a pump for my body wash over a squeeze tube. It’s nice to be able to pump out more product as needed rather than needing to open the bottle every time I need more.

My one complaint in this category, and the reason I deducted two points, is that I need to use much more of this body wash than I do with other body washes. I like body wash that produces a nice lather, and while this one does that, I have to use about twice as much as I would with other body washes. I assume this is due to the natural ingredients used in this product.

While I wish I didn’t need to use as much of this product to get my body clean, I have to give credit where credit is due. This body wash does an excellent job of getting my skin very clean. Most body washes accomplish that goal for me, but this one goes above and beyond because of its antibacterial property! My skin always feels fresh and completely clean after I’ve used this body wash.

It was difficult for me to rate the ingredients in this body wash. You’ll understand why once I’ve described each of the 11 ingredients:

Aqua, Saponified Oils of Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil* and Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Vegetable Glycerin*, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil*, Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum, Melaleuca Alternafolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, Litsea Cubeba (Litsea) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract

*certified organic

  • Aqua (Water)
    • Solvent for other ingredients
  • Saponified Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil
    • Surfactant
    • Emulsifier
    • Sunflower seed oil mixed with potassium hydroxide and water, and heated, turning the oil into soap
    • Sunflower seed oil improves a damaged or irritated skin barrier and contains fatty acids which help to keep skin hydrated
  • Saponified Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil
    • Surfactant
    • Emulsifier
    • Coconut oil mixed with potassium hydroxide and water, and heated, turning the oil into soap
    • Coconut oil moisturizes and seals in moisture
  • Vegetable Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil
    • Refreshing/cooling essential oil
    • Potential skin irritant for some, while also possessing the ability to soothe itchy skin in others (doesn’t make much sense, does it?)
    • Mild antibacterial property
  • Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum
    • Natural thickener
  • Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil
    • Antibacterial
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • May clear blemishes
    • Irritating only if used in concentrations over 10%
  • Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil
    • Fragrance that may cause sensitization
    • May be effective for treating acne
    • Antibacterial
    • Anti-inflammatory
  • Litsea Cubeba (Litsea) Oil
    • Fragrance that may cause sensitization
    • Antibacterial
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
    • Wax ester that stays on the skin surface to moisturize and make skin soft
  • Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract
    • Antibacterial
    • Astringent
    • Contains rosmarinic acid, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

There are many skin benefits found in most of these ingredients. The thing that concerns me, however, is how high peppermint oil is on the ingredient list. While it may be soothing for some people, it can have the opposite effect for others. I’m very surprised to see an essential oil this high up the list, since it could have quite a high concentration. Fortunately, this is a body wash rather than a leave-on product, which means this product isn’t very likely to be irritating to most people, despite the potentially irritating essential oils.

I was surprised and impressed to see that five of the ingredients have antibacterial properties. I think that is probably the main reason Beauty by Earth recommends this product for acne-prone skin.

I recognize the risks of using essential oils in skincare and body care products, but in this body wash, they create a very pleasant fragrance. I mostly smell the peppermint oil, but I can also detect the scent of tea tree oil slightly. I enjoy the smell of peppermint, especially this time of year. It’s such a clean and refreshing fragrance, and reminds me of candy canes!

Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash is $21.99 and there are a lot of things that must be taken into consideration when determining if that is a fair price or not. There are a lot of pros with this product: it is all natural, packaged nicely, cleans well, and smells great. On the other hand, more of this product is needed for thorough cleansing compared to a traditional body wash (which means it won’t last as long), it contains potentially irritating essential oils, and $21.99 is a much higher price than what I would usually pay for a body wash. While this is a good product, I think it is just a little bit overpriced.

I have really been enjoying using my Beauty by Earth Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash, especially now that the holiday season is in full swing!

Just like with most of the products I review, this body wash isn’t for everyone. If you know you’re sensitive to essential oils, particularly peppermint oil, it might be best to pass on this body wash.

For others, this might be just the thing you’re looking for. A lot of body washes contain synthetic ingredients that can be drying to the skin. This product is a good natural alternative to those traditional body washes.

Do you enjoy using body wash, or do you prefer bar soap? I use both, but have been reaching for this body wash more often lately. 🙂

2020 Cruelty-Free Holiday Gift Guide Part 2–Gift Sets & Luxury Items

Monday, I shared “Part 1” of the cruelty-free gift guide, which featured small gifts and stocking stuffers. Those types of gifts are versatile for family, friends, co-workers, or white elephant gift exchanges. Today, I’d like to share some cruelty-free gift sets and luxury items that I would recommend for gift-giving this holiday season.

I think gift sets are an excellent choice because they often include a variety of products, giving the “giftee” an opportunity to try different things. They’re also a good option if you know what type of product the person you’re buying for likes, but you don’t know which specific color, scent, etc. they prefer.

Luxury items are obviously more expensive, but I think they make wonderful gifts as well because a lot of people don’t want to splurge on those types of products for themselves. Gifting those items allows loved ones to try things they may never have otherwise had the opportunity to enjoy.

As always, all of the products mentioned in this gift guide are 100% cruelty-free. By IntegriBeauty standards, that means all of these companies are cruelty-free and either independently owned, or owned by another cruelty-free company.

Like “Part 1” of my gift guide, you will see some repeats from previous posts. These will be products that I’ve tested and enjoy so much, I want to recommend them again. Other items will be products that I have not personally tried, but that are from cruelty-free brands I trust. I will also make sure all products that I haven’t personally used, have very high ratings. I want to make sure I only recommend the best!

Let’s start with gift sets!

Beauty by Earth Bath Bomb Gift Set

I’m not a “bath person” so I don’t personally use bath bombs, but nearly everyone else I know loves them! They are on the pricey side, so a lot of people won’t buy bath bombs for themselves. For people that enjoy taking baths, bath bombs can take a nice hot bath to the next level, making it even more relaxing.

Beauty by Earth uses natural ingredients like detoxifying clays and salts, essential oils for aromatherapy, and organic oils and butters in their bath bombs, making them an excellent choice for the bath-lover in your life!

SmartyPits Trial Size Super-Strength Deodorant Set

This one probably seems pretty strange to see in a gift guide, but think about it…there are so many people transitioning from antiperspirant to deodorant, and it’s very difficult to find just the right formula and scent. There’s a good chance that someone in your life is on the hunt for the perfect natural deodorant. I sweat a lot and I’m very self-conscious about how I smell, so it’s been a struggle for me trying to find the right natural deodorant. If that reminds you of anyone you know, this might be the perfect gift for them.

I’ve only been using this deodorant for about a week, but I am really enjoying it so far. I like that this set includes four different fragrances (Coconut Mango, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Tweed + Spice, and Cool Cucumber) because SmartyPits offers many different fragrance options and it’s hard to choose just one. With this set, you don’t have to! These would also be a good gift idea for someone that travels a lot. These little trial size deodorants are the perfect size for travel!

Where to buy: ($22.00)

SmartyPits also makes a set with the same fragrances, but formulated for sensitive skin (baking soda free).

Versed The Big Chill Winter Unwind Gift Set

Skincare has become an important part of self-care for many of us, this year more than ever since we’re spending so much more time at home. Versed is a fairly new drugstore skincare brand. Versed actually claims to be the cleanest drugstore skincare brand, so I was curious about their products for a long time. I recently placed an order with Versed and one of the things I got was The Big Chill Winter Unwind Gift Set, which includes their popular Just Breathe Clarifying Serum (mini), The Fix Emergency Eye Mask (mini), and a Frozen Cooling Globe which is to be used for facial massage.

I’ve been using The Fix Emergency Eye Mask for a few weeks as my nighttime eye cream, and I really enjoy the heavy texture. I feel like it provides more hydration than most of the other eye creams I’ve used. I’ve used the Cooling Globe a couple of times, and it’s not my cup of tea, but I might not have been using it correctly. I know a lot of people enjoy these because the cool temperature combined with facial massage reduces puffiness and increases blood flow. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to use the Just Breathe Clarifying Serum because I’m using up another serum first. I’m very excited about it though, because it has an impressive ingredient list which includes niacinamide, willow bark extract, and zinc.

The Big Chill Winter Unwind Gift Set is great gift for anyone wanting to keep their skin in tip-top shape!

E.l.f. Skin Hit Kit and Mini Skin Hit Kit

I recently dipped my toe into e.l.f. skincare, and I must say that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality! One of the products I tried is the Happy Hydration Cream, which is a moisturizer formulated with hemp seed oil (this ingredient moisturizes and strengthens skin while also helping to regulate oil production). That cream is part of e.l.f.’s Cannabis Sativa Collection, which includes four products: Happy Hydration Cream,  All the Feels Facial Oil, Calm Balm, and Puff Puff Primer. All four of these products can be found in the Skin Hit Kit!

I was curious about those other three products, so I recently ordered the Mini Skin Hit Kit which includes minis of all four of the Cannabis Sativa Collection products. I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly test any of the products, besides the Happy Hydration Cream, but I think they would work well for all skin types. The full size Skin Hit Kit or Mini Skin Hit Kit would make a great gift for anyone looking to try some new skincare products.

Where to buy e.l.f. Skin Hit Kit: ($37.00)

Where to buy e.l.f. Mini Skin Hit Kit: ($15.00)

E.l.f. Putty Primer Trio

For anyone that read my product review on the e.l.f. Luminous Putty Primer, you might be surprised to see the Putty Primer Trio included in my gift guide. I own both the original Poreless Putty Primer and the Luminous Putty Primer, and neither of them do anything for my skin. However, just because these primers don’t work for me doesn’t mean they don’t work well for others. These primers have gotten amazing reviews from others, so I recognize that they are good products. This set is a good way to let someone try all three of e.l.f.’s Putty Primer formulas: Poreless Putty Primer, Matte Putty Primer, and Luminous Putty Primer.

Profusion Cosmetics Eye Essentials Brush Set

Every makeup-lover that enjoys eyeshadow needs a good set of eye brushes. Quality brushes can make a big difference in the ease of application and the finished eye look. It can be challenging to find eye brushes that work well for small or hooded eyes, because a lot of brushes are just too large. The Profusion Cosmetics Eye Essentials Brush Kit is a great option for smaller eyes because none of the brushes are too large. The Small Pointed Eyeshadow brush in particular is perfect for detail work on small eyes.

I’ve only talked about this brush set in relation to small or hooded eyes, but honestly I think these brushes would work very well for any size or shape of eyes. These brushes are high quality, soft, comfortable to hold, and vegan. They feel like high-end brushes without the high-end price tag!

The brushes in this set can be used to create a full eye look:

  • ES2 Firm Blending Eyeshadow Brush
  • ES3 Pointed Crease Eyeshadow Brush
  • ES5 Flat Shader Eyeshadow Brush
  • ES6 Small Pointed Eyeshadow Brush
  • ES7 Flat Precise Eyeshadow Brush

Where to buy: ($16.00)

BK Beauty The Essentials Face Brush Set

I was hesitant to include this brush set in the gift guide because of the price, but I did want to include luxury items and these are the best of the best in face brushes. I don’t actually own these brushes, but I have heard nothing but rave reviews from influencers and friends alike that have purchased BK Beauty brushes, particularly the face brushes.

This vegan brush set includes the following:

  • Contoured Foundation Brush OR Round Foundation Brush
  • Large Powder Brush
  • Bronzer Brush
  • Tapered Powder Brush

Where to buy: ($130.00)

Pinrose Travel Size Rollerball Perfume Set

Perfume is a popular item to gift, but did you know that most fragrance brands are NOT cruelty-free? There are plenty of cruelty-free skincare and makeup options, but very few for fragrances. One of the few fragrance brands that is cruelty-free (clean and vegan, too!) is Pinrose. I haven’t had room in my budget this year to try any Pinrose fragrances, but so many of Pinrose’s perfumes sound like they would smell amazing! This set is a great way to try them all, which is especially nice because it would be very difficult to choose just one.

Where to buy: ($47.00)

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

After perfume, I think luxurious body creams are some of the best gifts for someone you want to spoil! The one that always comes to mind first for me is Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. Most of you reading this post have probably already heard of this product because it’s been quite popular for a long time now and I wrote a product review on it earlier this month.

Bum Bum Cream is not only popular because it’s a good body cream, but also because of the scent…maybe even primarily because of the scent. Sol de Janeiro states “Addictively scented with our Cheirosa ’62 fragrance with delicious notes of pistachio, salted caramel and vanilla.” I’ll never get tired of this scent. I wish it would follow me everywhere I go!

If you’re buying for someone that loves luxurious body products that have a rich unique fragrance, look no further than Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream.

Where to buy: ($45.00)

Alpyn Beauty Skincare

Another luxury gift idea is skincare. I primarily use drugstore skincare products, but I have been lusting over Alpyn Beauty’s luxury natural skincare products for months. This vegan brand is unique and not very well-known, so I’ll tell you a little bit about them. Alpyn Beauty sustainably sources organic wild botanical ingredients from the mountains in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The ingredients used in Alpyn Beauty products are backed by science to preserve, protect, and strengthen skin.

The Alpyn Beauty skincare line includes the Wild Huckleberry 8-Acid Polishing Peel, PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm, PlantGenius Melt Moisturizer, PlantGenius Survival Serum, Calming Midnight Mask with Melatonin & Wild Dandelion, and Creamy Bubbling Cleanser with Fruit Enzymes & AHAs. The product that I find to be most interesting is the PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm. It’s difficult to find an eye cream that actually improves the appearance of the under-eye area, but judging by the many glowing reviews, this one is very effective! It contains ingredients that brighten, tighten, lift, fill in fine lines, reduce puffiness, protect against free radicals, and keep skin hydrated. This sounds like a miracle product that does it all!

Where to buy Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Line-Filling Eye Balm: ($62.00)

Thrive Causemetics Cosmo Power Multi-Dimensional Strobing Blush

The makeup-lover in your life will always appreciate luxury makeup products. Though I’ve only tried two of their products so far, my favorite high-end makeup brand is Thrive Causemetics. Their products are extremely well-made and the company does a lot of good things to make the world a better place!

One of the Thrive Causemetics products I own is the Cosmo Power Multi-Dimensional Strobing Blush in the shade Rosie. This blush is a universally-flattering pink with a golden sheen, so in my opinion it is like applying both blush and highlight at the same time! This blush is lovely and would make a wonderful gift.

Where to buy: ($34.00)

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara

The other Thrive Causemetics product I own is their Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara in the shade Brynn (black). This mascara is by far their most popular product, and for good reason. It’s very effective at separating and lengthening eyelashes, and will never flake or smudge because it is a tubing mascara. There aren’t many tubing mascaras on the market and this is the only one I’ve tried, but it’s an excellent choice! In addition to the effectiveness of the mascara, it also comes in very nice luxury packaging. The tube is very heavy and I think that really adds to the experience.

Almost everyone that wears makeup, wears mascara, so you really can’t go wrong with this product as a gift!

Tati Beauty Textured Neutrals Vol. 1 Eyeshadow Palette

You didn’t think I’d forgotten eyeshadow, did you? Of course not–I love eyeshadow! If you have someone in your life that enjoys building beautiful eye looks and working with a variety of textures, they will absolutely adore the Tati Beauty Textured Neutrals Vol. 1 eyeshadow palette. This palette features six beautiful shades: black, chocolate brown, burnt orange, camel, cream, and cranberry. Each shade comes in four unique textures: matte, sequin (matte with suspended shimmer), metallic, and glitter. These shadows are highly pigmented and the glitters are out-of-this-world gorgeous!

Where to buy: ($48.00)

Travel Makeup Organizer

Last but not least, I had to include a travel makeup organizer. It doesn’t exactly fall under “gift sets & luxury items” but I think this type of bag makes a great gift for someone that likes to travel with more than a few makeup products. I’ve used this bag on a couple of trips over the last few years.

This isn’t the prettiest makeup bag, but it is very sturdy and holds everything needed for a full face of makeup (or skincare; it could be used for either or both, depending on the person). The compartments are customizable by moving the dividers as needed, so if you need a little more room in one of the compartments, you can move or remove one of the dividers. In the top of the bag, there are pouches designed for brushes, with a flap that folds down to protect them from damage. Plus, there is a zipper pocket that’s big enough to hold a couple of small to medium sized palettes!

I actually received this travel makeup organizer as a gift myself, and have really enjoyed it!

Where to buy: ($18.99)

I truly hope this gift guide helps you with your gift shopping this holiday season. This year has been a stressful one, but maybe holiday shopping doesn’t have to be. More of us are shopping online instead of going into stores, so I think that should help!

If you have questions about any of the products in this gift guide (part 1 or 2), please don’t hesitate to ask. There are a few things on here that I haven’t yet used myself, but I can still help you find any answers you need. 🙂 The same goes for any other cruelty-free products that you’re unsure of. There is a wide world of products out there and it’s not always easy deciding which ones are worth the money.

Have you started your holiday gift shopping yet, or will you start on Black Friday (or later)? I’ve bought gifts for some of the people on my list, but I’m still looking for ideas for others. That’s always the hardest part, in my opinion!

Happy shopping!

2020 Cruelty-Free Holiday Gift Guide Part 1–Small Gifts & Stocking Stuffers

Black Friday is only a few short days away and Christmas is right around the corner. I never feel ready for it, but it’s time to start thinking about gift ideas. My favorite types of things to buy as gifts are self-care items, because I think proper self-care is often overlooked, especially during busy times in our lives.

I recognize that self-care doesn’t look the same for every person, but beauty-related self-care is what always comes to mind for me since that is what I’m passionate about. For weeks, I’ve been contemplating the idea of putting together a cruelty-free gift guide, and I’m going for it! I hope this guide will be helpful to you, whether you’re interested in any of the specific products, or if I simply provide you with some inspiration.

I’m going to begin with small gifts and stocking stuffers. I think these are some of the most fun products to give and receive. They’re usually easy on the wallet too, which many of us can appreciate during this tough year.

You will see some repeats in this gift guide from previous posts. These will be products that I’ve tested and enjoy so much, I want to recommend them again. Other items will be products that I have not personally tried, but that are from cruelty-free brands I trust. I will also make sure all products that I haven’t personally used, have very high ratings. I want to make sure I only recommend the best!

Beauty by Earth Organic Lip Scrub

Nothing says self-care like lip scrub, especially during cold winter months! Beauty by Earth Organic Lip Scrubs provide luxurious exfoliation and hydration. These come in three flavors: berry, mint, and vanilla. For the holidays, I don’t think you can beat mint! Plus, it’s very refreshing.

Where to buy: ($11.99) or ($14.99)

You can also purchase these lips scrubs in a gift set. The set includes three lip scrubs, one in each of the three flavors. This set would be a nice gift for someone that you know LOVES lip scrub, or you could split them up and use as individual stocking stuffers for three people. 😉

Where to buy: ($25.99) or ($29.99)

Beauty by Earth Organic Lip Balm

If you know someone that would enjoy the Beauty by Earth Organic Lip Scrub, they may also like the Beauty by Earth Organic Peppermint Lip Balm. These two products make a great pair to keep your lips looking healthy through the dry, windy winter months. This lip balm is full of nourishing ingredients that lips will love! It comes in five options:

  • 4-pack unflavored
  • 4-pack honey/vanilla bean (2 of each flavor)
  • 4-pack superfruits (one each of acai berry, asian pear, grapefruit pomegranate, green tea)
  • 4-pack peppermint
  • 12-pack variety (4 peppermint, 1 acai berry, 1 asian pear, 1 grapefruit pomegranate, 1 green tea, 2 vanilla bean, 2 honey)

The Organic Peppermint Lip Balm would be the perfect companion gift for the Organic Mint Lip Scrub!

Where to buy Organic Peppermint Lip Balm (4-pack): ($10.99) or ($10.99)

If you’re shopping for a lot of people that enjoy lip balm, it might be more cost-effective to go for the big 12-pack gift set.

Where to buy Organic Lip Balm Gift Set (12-pack): ($24.99) or ($26.99)

I haven’t tried the Beauty by Earth Organic Lip Balms, but I do have their SPF 15 Lip Balm in the piña colada flavor. The SPF 15 Lip Balms come in 2-packs in two flavors: piña colada and key lime. These are a great option for anyone looking to include sun protection in their lip care. These lip balms are high quality and would certainly make great stocking stuffers just like the Organic Lip Balms, but they are a little bit more expensive per tube.

Where to buy: ($10.99) or ($10.99)

Milani Keep it Full Nourishing Lip Plumper

I couldn’t include a lip scrub and lip balm without also including a third lip product to add a little holiday sparkle, now could I? Milani Keep it Full Nourishing Lip Plumper is a high-shine hydrating lip gloss. Perfect for the holidays! There are 15 shades available and ten of those have shimmer. I think shimmer is so pretty in lip gloss, especially for festive holiday makeup looks. This lip gloss would make an excellent stocking stuffer!

Where to buy: ($8.99) or ($5.98-$13.97) (Please note that there are only 12 shades currently available on Amazon.)

E.l.f. Bite Size Eyeshadows & Face Duos

For the makeup lover in your life, e.l.f. Bite Size Eyeshadow palettes might be the perfect stocking stuffer. They’re small but mighty, filled with beautiful eyeshadow shades that perform impressively well. There are eight unique palettes, ranging from standard neutral to bold and bright, so there’s an option for every style!

Where to buy: ($3.00)

Soon after the Bite Size eyeshadow palettes were released, e.l.f. put out the Bite Size Face Duos, which include a blush and highlight. These would be another great stocking stuffer because they’re the same small size as the Bite Size Eyeshadows. Not only are they adorable, but these little face duos are highly pigmented. I haven’t reviewed these yet, but I do own two shades: Spiced Apple and Cantaloupe. These are awesome little palettes and they can’t be beaten on price!

Where to buy: ($3.00)

Milani Eyeshadow Primer

Milani Eyeshadow Primer is the perfect companion gift for e.l.f. Bite Size Eyeshadows, or any eyeshadow! I always use Milani Eyeshadow Primer if I’m going to wear eyeshadow. Eyeshadow wears beautifully over this primer all day long without fading or creasing. For the purpose of this post, I’ll also point out that it’s very small! Only a small amount of this product is needed, so it comes in a small tube with only 0.30 ounces of product.

Where to buy: ($6.99)

E.l.f. Artist Mixing Palette

The e.l.f. Artist Mixing Palette is a handy little tool to keep on hand for mixing cream or liquid products. Most people use the back of their hand, but this is a cleaner, more convenient option. It’s easy to use because there is an adjustable strap attached to the back, which is used to secure the palette in place over the hand or wrist. I’ve been using this product for a couple of years and I love it! I pump out the amount of product I’ll need onto the palette and then pick it up with a brush or sponge from there.

Where to buy: ($2.00)

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

I generally prefer a brush over a sponge for applying my foundation, but I know many people are the opposite and may also use a sponge to apply powder and other face products. The best sponge I’ve tried is the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I always use this sponge damp. Once it’s fully saturated and the excess water is squeezed out, it’s the perfect size and texture. It does absorb a good amount of product, but I find that to be the case with all makeup sponges. This sponge can be purchased with a travel case, and I find that case to be so helpful. It has openings in the side so if the sponge is still damp when it goes into the case, air can still get to the sponge.

Where to buy Miracle Complexion Sponge + Case: ($6.98)

There is also a limited edition version of this sponge that comes packaged in a holiday ornament. It’s very cute and would make the perfect small gift or stocking stuffer!

Where to buy Limited Edition Miracle Complexion Sponge: ($4.89)

Pacifica Beauty 7 Free Nail Polish

What is prettier for the holidays than red nail polish? Pacifica makes a clean nail polish formula called 7 Free Nail Polish. I rarely wear nail polish myself and have never owned any from Pacifica, but I trust Pacifica and their nail polishes come in the most beautiful shades. The product description for their nail polishes states that the formula is long lasting and does not include many of the chemicals found in traditional nail polish. The shade “Cinnamon Girl” is a true red and absolutely perfect for the holidays!

Where to buy: ($9.00)

Yes To Coconut Ultra Hydrating Moisturizing Hand & Cuticle Cream

If you’re gifting nail polish to someone, you might as well make sure their hands and cuticles are well cared for too! That’s easier said than done with all the hand washing we’ve been doing this year, but Yes To Coconut Ultra Hydrating Moisturizing Hand & Cuticle Cream can help. I’ve been using this hand cream for a long time and I can tell you that it’s not nearly as greasy as most hand creams I’ve tried, but it’s still very nourishing. It’s great to keep on hand for reapplication after hand washings.

Where to buy: ($5.99)

Pacifica Sheet Masks

I never buy sheet masks for myself, but I think they’re a lot of fun to receive as gifts. My mom usually puts one in my stocking and it’s always a fun and special treat! Pacifica offers several types of sheet masks. I haven’t tried these specific products, but I have used a lot of Pacifica skincare over the years and I think it’s all very good quality. No matter who you’re buying for, one of these sheet masks will probably be appropriate for his or her skin’s needs. All of these can be purchased for $4.00 each:

Mane Club Hair Masks

Along the same vein as sheet masks, I think hair mask packets also make great stocking stuffers! They’re compact and inexpensive, but provide enough product for a few uses. Mane Club makes six unique hair masks for a variety of hair concerns. They also have fun names and cute packaging, which are great for gifts! These hair masks can be purchased directly from Mane Club or, but they are more expensive from Ulta. I have not personally used these hair masks yet, but they all received high ratings. All of these can be purchased for $3.00 each:

E.l.f. Cruelty-Free Pins

If you have someone in your life that is passionate about “going cruelty-free,” they might enjoy one of e.l.f.’s cruelty-free pins! These pins are so cute and would be perfect on a backpack or jacket. There are five options and each one features a different animal. The options are:

  • Bunny
  • Cat
  • Hedgehog
  • Sloth
  • Dog

Where to buy: ($5.00)

E.l.f. Retro Paradise Makeup Case

If you like these gift ideas, but you don’t want to use them as stocking stuffers, a good alternative is to gift them in a makeup bag! You can find makeup bags everywhere, but I think this one from e.l.f. is especially cute. It’s big enough to hold several small items without being too bulky. This would also be perfect for small school supplies if you’re shopping for a student!

Where to buy: ($12.00)

Shipping from all online stores mentioned

I hope this list has been helpful! I tried to provide a lot of good affordable options for stocking stuffers or small gifts.

There is so much more out there than what I was able to discuss in this post! If there is anything you’re interested in buying as a gift, but you aren’t certain that it’s cruelty-free, please reach out to me and I’d be happy to help. 🙂

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream–for Soft Skin that Smells Divine

I am not a proponent of fragrance in skincare or makeup, but I can’t resist fragrance in some of my hair and body care products. For example, when the fragrance smells like vacation, sunshine, and a fancy dessert all at once… Add that to a rich body cream, and I can’t resist.

Even if you missed the title of this post, there’s a good chance you know what I’m talking about. Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum (pronounced “Boom Boom”) Cream is wildly popular, and for good reason! Brazilian Bum Bum cream is a very special product that provides a luxurious experience. It feels wonderful going on, smells absolutely amazing, and the scent lingers all day long.

If you aren’t familiar with Sol de Janeiro, it’s a cruelty-free company that makes body care, hair care, fragrances, sun care, lip butters, and even a candle that smells like their Bum Bum Cream (I would love to have one in every room of my house!). Sol de Janeiro embraces the Brazilian attitude of body positivity and also embraces diversity.  Their products are formulated with many ingredients that are indigenous to Brazil, like their key ingredients cupuaçu butter, açaí oil, and coconut oil.

Product claims directly from

Our award-winning, deliciously-scented body cream is the ultimate Brazilian Beauty Secret.

Ease of application

Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is packaged in a jar, like most thick creams and body butters. It’s easy to open and access the product. I’m glad of that because I wouldn’t want to waste a single bit of this delicious smelling body cream.

Unlike most thick body creams, this one is very quick and easy to apply. I find that most rich body creams are quite greasy and take a long time to work into the skin. They leave my hands feeling greasy too, and that’s pretty frustrating. Bum Bum cream absorbs quickly into the skin, making it very easy and pleasant to apply.

Even though this body cream doesn’t feel greasy and it’s not as thick as some body butters I’ve used, it definitely provides a good amount of hydration to the skin. My skin always feels soft, smooth, and well moisturized after I’ve applied this product. That hydration doesn’t fade quickly, either. The Cupuaçu Butter locks in moisture to keep skin feeling hydrated all day.

Aqua (Water, Eau), Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Dodecane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Parfum (Fragrance), Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Euterpe Oleracea (Açaí) Fruit Oil, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuaçu) Seed Butter, Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil, Paullinia Cupana Seed Extract, Ilex Guayusa Leaf Extract, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract, Bixa Orellana Seed Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Squalane, Tocopherol, Sodium Phytate, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Sorbitan Isostearate, Phenoxyethanol, Mica, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Citral, Coumarin, Eugenol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Limonene, Linalool

I honestly never paid attention to the ingredients in this product until I started preparing for this product review. Once I started digging into the list, there were some big surprises. First of all, there are 40 ingredients in this body cream! I think that’s the largest number I’ve seen out of all the products I’ve reviewed thus far.

There are twelve ingredients in this formula that directly benefit the skin. The thing about these ingredients that surprised me, is that eleven of those twelve ingredients aren’t in the top ten, which means the concentrations are probably quite low. Hopefully there is a high enough concentration of these to still benefit the skin:

  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
    • Humectant (sodium form of hyaluronic acid)
  • Coconut oil
    • Moisturizes and seals in moisture
  • Açaí oil
    • Potent source of antioxidants, including ferulic acid and epicatechin
  • Cupuaçu butter
    • Contains many antioxidants and nutrients
    • Deeply hydrates and soothes skin
  • Brazil nut oil
    • High in several nutrients (especially selenium, which fortifies the skin barrier)
    • Penetrates deeply to improve skin health
    • May smooth and firm skin
  • Guaraná seed extract
    • Tightens and smooths skin
    • Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties
  • Ilex Guayusa Leaf Extract
    • Skin-protectant
  • Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract
    • Skin-soothing
    • Antioxidant properties
  • Bixa Orellana Seed Extract
    • Antioxidant
  • Squalane
    • Moisturizer (found naturally in certain fish, plants, and human skin)
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E)
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier

The majority of the other ingredients are neutral supporting ingredients like emollients, thickeners, emulsifiers, and preservatives.

Unfortunately, there are TEN ingredients that may be sensitizing to the skin. Carrot seed oil can have antioxidant properties, but applied topically it may cause sensitivity. The other nine potentially harmful ingredients are Parfum (fragrance) and other fragrance ingredients. This product is highly scented so I expected to see fragrance pretty high up the list, but I’m not sure why there are so many other fragrance ingredients, in addition to the Parfum, which is Sol de Janeiro’s proprietary fragrance blend.

Due to the amount of fragrance added to this product, I would highly recommend that anyone with sensitive skin avoid Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. Fortunately, Sol de Janeiro also offers a fragrance-free body cream called Brazilian Nude Cream. I haven’t reviewed that product’s ingredients in detail like I have for the Bum Bum Cream, but the Nude Cream would definitely be a better choice for anyone with sensitive skin.

While I’m not thrilled with the large number of fragrance ingredients in this product, I absolutely love its scent. Sol de Janeiro somehow created the most perfect blend (in my opinion) with the Cheirosa ’62 fragrance. I feel like this product is dessert for my skin. It has a decadently delicious scent that you might not want to use every day, but when you do, it’s a real treat!

I’m not very good at describing fragrances, but Sol de Janeiro does list the fragrance notes on their website to give you an idea of what the Cheirosa ’62 fragrance smells like:

  • Top: pistachio, almond
  • Mid: heliotrope, jasmine petals
  • Dry: vanilla, salted caramel, sandalwood

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is $45.00. That is the most I’ve ever spent on a body care product and honestly felt pretty guilty about it at first. I’m not one to spend a lot of money on individual products, generally. However, I have to remember that this is a luxury item that does provide a luxury experience that I enjoy.

While I understand that luxury products come with a higher price tag than more affordable alternatives, I think this one is a bit overpriced for one reason and I’m sure you can guess what it is. Ingredients. I can look past the unusually long list of ingredients and even the nine fragrance ingredients (that’s pretty easy since I’m obsessed with this product’s scent), but I don’t think it’s right for Sol de Janeiro to put such a high price tag on a product when the skin-loving ingredients they tout are so far down the list.

Other Sol de Janeiro products with Cheirosa ’62 scent

If you’ve tried Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and love the scent, or you think you’d like it based on the description above, you might be interested in some of Sol de Janeiro’s other products that have the same Cheirosa ’62 fragrance:

  • SOL Cheirosa ‘62 (perfume) $78.00
  • Brazilian Crush Body Fragrance Mist $32.00
  • Limited Edition Cheirosa ’62 Candle $42.00 (or $18.00 for a votive candle)
  • Bum Bum Body Scrub $42.00
  • Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel $25.00

I think this body cream should be reformulated to move the standout ingredients closer to the top of the list. Many of them are unique ingredients that you don’t see often, and they would be more beneficial in higher concentrations. Other than that, I think Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is golden! I only use it about once a week since it is an expensive product, but I always look forward to using it and love smelling it on my PJs the next morning when I wake up. 🙂

I would hesitate to buy this body cream for myself again due to the price, but I would love to receive it (or any other Sol de Janeiro products with the Cheirosa ’62 scent) as a gift! I think luxury items like this make very nice thoughtful gifts since many people don’t splurge on luxury products for themselves.

Have you ever tried the famous Brazilian Bum Bum Cream? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Please let me know in the comments below!

Yes To Coconut Ultra Hydrating Moisturizing Hand & Cuticle Cream–Restore Moisture Lost from Extra Hand Washing

Hand washing is essential for good health, now more than ever. In addition to all the regular times we’ve always known to wash our hands (before preparing food, after blowing your nose, etc.), the CDC now recommends washing hands after touching surfaces in public and before/after touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

It is undeniable that hand washing and hand sanitizer are more important than ever before. However, this increased hand washing is not without consequences. Every time you wash your hands, the natural oils on your hands are stripped away which compromises the natural skin barrier. This, combined with harsh cleansing agents, can lead to dry, irritated, damaged skin. It’s important to use a moisturizer often, especially after hand washing, to restore moisture lost from extra hand washing.

I’ve recently developed eczema on my left hand, and it is caused by excessive hand washing. It is very frustrating, but I’ve found a way to manage it. Every time I wash my hands, or any time they’re feeling particularly dry, I apply a pea-sized amount of Yes To Coconut Ultra Hydrating Moisturizing Hand & Cuticle Cream. This is a product I’ve been using for several months now, but I’m using it much more often these days and have come to count on it for relief since I developed eczema.

Please note that in my review of this product, I will only be reviewing it as a hand cream. My cuticles have always been very healthy so I don’t notice any difference in my cuticles when I use this cream.

My hands instantly feel more hydrated when I apply this hand cream. That is true of most hand creams, but with this one I can feel a difference long after application. Because of my frequent hand washing, I don’t feel that extra hydration all day long, but I don’t mind reapplying. I am very pleased with the level of hydration I achieve with this hand cream.

My biggest pet-peeve with hand creams is that greasy feeling that many of them have…like you’ve rubbed Crisco all over your hands! Not a good feeling, and not practical if you plan on touching anything. I was drawn to this Yes to Coconut hand cream because I specifically searched for non-greasy hand creams and this was one of the results. “Non-greasy” is in the product description, so I had to give it a go!

When I first tried this hand cream, I thought “Oh no, this is just another greasy hand cream.” That’s because when you first apply it, it does feel quite greasy! I continued using it because I liked how hydrating it is, and I could put it on before sitting down to watch TV or anything else that didn’t require me to use my hands. But finally, I realized that it just needed some time to sink in. I was being impatient, as usual. This hand cream does sink into the skin well after a few minutes. If you give it that time, you’ll find that they were being honest with the “non-greasy” claim. 🙂

Please note that the ingredient list shown here does not match what is shown on Amazon or, but it is correct. I reached out to Yes To customer service and they confirmed that I have the most recent formulation.

Water, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Stearyl alcohol, Stearic acid, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Cetearyl alcohol, Glycerin, Cetearyl olivate, Sorbitan olivate, Polyglyceryl-10 laurate, Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, Persea gratissima (avocado) oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), Calendula ocinalis flower extract, Psidium guajava fruit extract, Orchis mascula flower extract, Musa sapientum (banana) fruit extract, Morinda citrifolia (noni) fruit extract, Hibiscus sabdari-a flower extract, Aleurites moluccana (kukui) seed extract, Polyglyceryl-3 stearate, Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, Allantoin, Citric acid, Sodium benzoate, Potassium sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum (natural), Coumarin

There are a whopping 35 ingredients in this hand cream. I’m not sure if that is common for hand creams since this is the first one I’ve reviewed, but most of the other products that I’ve reviewed ingredients for, have only 20 to 25. Thirty-five seems like a lot!

This hand cream contains some amazing skin-loving ingredients. I’m impressed! I’ll list the most noteworthy ingredients and their functions below:

  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
    • Moisturizer
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Helps wound healing
  • Cetearyl olivate & Sorbitan olivate
    • Together, they form a natural emulsifier with the trade name “Olivem 1000” which generates liquid crystal structures that mimic lipid structures in the outermost layer of the skin
      • Repairs skin barrier
  • Sesame seed oil
    • Contains nourishing and moisturizing fatty acids
    • Repairs and regenerates dry skin
  • Sweet almond oil
    • Loaded with nourishing fatty acids
    • Contains vitamin E
    • Smooths, softens, and moisturizes
  • Avocado oil
    • Packed full of nourishing fatty acids
    • Extraordinary skin penetration ability
  • Calendula ocinalis flower extract
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Antioxidant
    • Healing properties

The one unfortunate thing about the beneficial ingredients in this formula, is that there are only four of them in the top ten (ingredients with the highest concentrations). The other six ingredients in the top ten are “neutral” ingredients that help the formula to work, but don’t really provide any benefit to the skin. These are ingredients like solvents and emollients.

There are a couple of bad ingredients on the list. The “Fragrance,” while natural, is of unknown origins and could cause irritation or sensitization of the skin. Coumarin is also added for fragrance. This is one of the “EU 26 fragrances” that has to be labeled separately (can’t be included with “fragrance” or “parfum”) because it has allergen potential.

Fortunately, Fragrance and Coumarin are the last two ingredients on the list, which means they have the lowest concentrations. I don’t think the low concentration of these fragrance ingredients will cause a problem for most people, but just like with all fragranced products, it’s best for anyone with very sensitive skin to avoid.

As I just mentioned in the ingredients section above, the “Fragrance” and Coumarin ingredients which give this product its scent, could be problematic for some. However, if you don’t have sensitive skin, and you like coconut, you will probably enjoy the fragrance of this product. It is very mild, but this hand cream does have a slightly sweet coconut scent.

This hand cream is definitely a bargain at only $5.99! It’s a great product overall, plus the tube is generously sized for a hand cream at three ounces ($2.00/ounce). A tube of this hand cream lasts me a very long time, even when I use it frequently.

All Yes To products are very reasonably priced and I really appreciate that! Usually, products that contain mostly natural ingredients are very expensive. Yes To does a great job of keeping their prices low so their products will be accessible to all. 🙂

I wholeheartedly agree with Yes To’s product claims for the Yes To Coconut Ultra Hydrating Moisturizing Hand & Cuticle Cream. I have definitely enjoyed using it, and I’m glad I have a backup tube for when I run out of my first one soon!

I think this hand cream is such a good affordable option for anyone looking for something to provide a good amount of moisture, without making their hands feel greasy!

Pacifica Coconut & Charcoal Underarm Detox Scrub–for an Easier Transition to Natural Deodorant

When you stop using antiperspirant, the first two to four weeks are known as a “transitional” or “detox” period for your underarms. During that time, all the aluminum that’s built up is released. For most people, this time brings some unpleasant changes like excessive sweating and a different or stronger odor. This is something that everyone goes through after stopping antiperspirant, whether you immediately switch to natural deodorant or decide to go au naturale for a while.

As companies have innovated and created every type of natural deodorant imaginable, they have also considered the detox period their customers experience. There are now exfoliating acids, underarm masks, and scrubs that make for an easier transition to natural deodorant. These work by either diminishing bacteria or drawing out the aluminum and other impurities more quickly than they would be released naturally.

The product I chose to help me through the detox period was Pacifica Coconut & Charcoal Underarm Detox Scrub. I know I discuss a lot of Pacifica products here and I apologize if you’re tired of seeing so much Pacifica, but it is a brand that I genuinely trust and enjoy!

Honestly, I don’t remember my detox phase very well at this point. I have always struggled with finding deodorants that work well for me and none of them I’ve ever tried have consistently helped with controlling my odor. For that reason, I didn’t notice much of a difference between my detox period and the time after. You might be wondering why I would review a product like this since I didn’t have a noteworthy detox period. I want to discuss it because even though I haven’t used this product exactly the way it is intended, it’s still useful to me and I see its merits for anyone transitioning from antiperspirant to no deodorant or natural deodorant.

Product claims directly from

It can be hard to transition to natural deodorant. We get it. This scrub makes it easier by helping to remove pore clogging products so your pits can get back to their natural state.

Ease of application

Like a lot of scrubs, this one is packaged in a jar. A squeeze tube would be easier to use, but the product is quite thick so that is probably why Pacifica chose to use a jar. I understand that, and it’s a very pretty jar! I do, however, wish they’d put ridges on the lid to make it a little easier to grip. Most people will be using this product in the shower with wet hands, so I think easily “grippable” packaging is important. I never screw the lid back on too tightly to make this easier and it works well enough so this is only a minor complaint.

The scrub itself is very easy to use! I scoop out less than a dime-sized amount and scrub gently in circular motions. Once finished, the scrub rinses off easily without leaving any residue behind.

This underarm scrub does an amazing job of exfoliating! When I was between natural deodorants and had gone back to antiperspirant for a while, I used this scrub to remove my antiperspirant when soap wasn’t getting the job done. This was common on days that I didn’t sweat as much as usual–that stuff did not want to let go, until I remembered I have this scrub specially formulated for the underarm area! It always got my armpits squeaky clean.

That exfoliation comes in handy now with natural deodorant as well. I often reapply deodorant in the afternoon and sometimes it’s still hanging on when I shower. This scrub gets it off easy-peasy. 🙂

I only use this scrub for exfoliating my underarms since I have a separate body scrub that I enjoy, but this underarm detox scrub would be effective at all-over body exfoliation as well. It’s a very gentle scrub that won’t harm the skin, but will exfoliate away dead skin or product residue (like deodorant or even sunscreen).

Odor elimination

The most common reason I use this scrub recently has been for odor elimination. Sorry for the TMI, but I can get pretty stinky some days. On those days, I know that soap alone won’t be enough to eliminate that odor. It’s really frustrating to get out of the shower after scrubbing with soap and find that my armpits still stink! My solution is to use both soap and this scrub. It is the most effective product I’ve found for getting rid of stubborn B.O.

This underarm detox scrub is a beautiful product, both to look at and in use. But what makes it work? There are some really interesting ingredients in this product that make it so effective.

aqua, cetyl alcohol, prunus armeniaca (apricot) seed powder, glycerin, glyceryl stearate citrate, charcoal powder, maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, coco-caprylate, hydrolyzed verbascum thapsus flower, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, decyl glucoside, potassium cetyl phosphate, xanthan gum, diheptyl succinate, capryloyl glycerin/sebacic acid copolymer, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, parfum (natural)

I’ll first go over the two most important ingredients that make this scrub so effective for use during the “detox” or “transitional” period after stopping antiperspirant:

  • Apricot seed powder
    • Scrubbing agent
  • Charcoal powder
    • Traps and draws impurities out of the skin
    • Eliminates odor

This photo isn’t the best, but you can actually see the apricot seed powder interspersed, and the charcoal powder gives it the gray color. I like it when I can see a product’s active ingredients!

“But wait, there’s more!” There are other beneficial ingredients in this scrub to consider:

  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Arrowroot powder
    • Softens skin
  • Hydrolyzed verbascum thapsus flower
    • Antioxidant
  • Coconut oil
    • Moisturizes and seals in moisture
  • Green tea leaf extract
    • Antioxidant
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Antimicrobial

The majority of the other ingredients are there to support the formula. They are thickeners, emulsifiers, emollients, and preservatives. The one bad ingredient is “parfum.” Even though it’s stated that it is natural, there is no way of knowing what makes up this fragrance. I always mention this, but in this product’s case it is a pretty minor offense since this is the last ingredient on the list and therefore a very low concentration.

I have not seen any other products quite like this one and as a result, it is difficult to compare the price to similar products. If this was any old body scrub, I might think it’s a bit overpriced. It isn’t body scrub though; this scrub is designed to be used specifically on the underarm area which means you don’t need to use very much. This product has lasted me a very long time and I’ve barely put a dent in it. I’ve had it much longer than the suggested shelf life of 12 months and it’s still going strong! To me, that means this product is a great value.

Companion product

I want to mention one other Pacifica product that can assist with the transition to natural deodorant, and even during continued use. After a workout or anything else that might make you sweatier than usual, you might want to reapply your deodorant. That likely won’t feel very nice though, if you haven’t first wiped off the excess sweat.

That’s where Pacifica’s deodorant wipes come in handy. You can use them to wipe away excess sweat and then reapply deodorant. Your armpits will feel fresh and clean again! This product comes in three fragrances: coconut & gardenia, rose, and coconut milk. My favorite of the three are the Coconut Milk & Essential Oils Underarm Deodorant Wipes.

Pacifica Coconut & Charcoal Underarm Detox Scrub is a unique product. I think Pacifica really nailed it! If you’re reading about this detox scrub out of curiosity but haven’t yet chosen a natural deodorant, you may also want to read my review about Pacifica Coconut Cream Clean Deodorant. Pacifica makes some really great body care products!

I would recommend this underarm detox scrub to just about anyone. I think it’s such a good product, whether you’re transitioning from antiperspirant to natural deodorant, or if you’re like me and enjoy using it for the exfoliation and odor elimination. It’s a great multi-purpose product.

If you’ve made the switch to natural deodorant from antiperspirant, did you use any type of product to make that transition easier? Please comment below with your experience!

Pacifica Coconut Cream Clean Deodorant–Prevent Armpit Odor the Natural Way

There is a lot of trial and error involved in finding the right natural deodorant. The first step is determining what you need from your deodorant. I sweat more than the average woman, so I look for something that will absorb sweat. I’m also self-conscious about how I smell, so I want something that will smell good without being too strongly scented.

For my first attempt with natural deodorant, I went for Lume because I kept seeing it advertised and their deodorant had a lot of great reviews. Unfortunately, it did not work for me like it did for all those other people. I gave it a fair shot for several weeks, but I felt like my armpits were always wet and I always smelled bad. That persisted well after the “detox” period that normally lasts about two weeks for anyone switching from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant. Finally I decided it wasn’t for me and instead of trying more natural deodorants, I went back to my old antiperspirant.

Fast forward to about a year later and I decided to give natural deodorant another chance. I kept hearing everyone talk about Native deodorant, saw that it was supposed to be good for absorbing sweat, and decided to give it a go. I actually liked this one pretty well. It did a good job of managing my sweat most days. Unfortunately, I later learned that Native is owned by Procter & Gamble. Native is cruelty-free, but P&G is not. Since I don’t support cruelty-free companies owned by companies that are not cruelty-free, I was then on the hunt for another option.

One of my favorite 100% cruelty-free brands is Pacifica. I’ve enjoyed nearly every product I’ve ever owned from them and I love everything they stand for. Because of that, I decided my next natural deodorant should come from Pacifica.

Pacifica offers natural deodorant in three scents: sandalwood incense, watermelon rainbow, and coconut cream. Only the sandalwood incense and coconut cream scents are formulated with baking soda, and since I had good luck with Native’s formula which is made with baking soda, I knew I wanted to try one of those scents. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the sandalwood incense scent, so I went with the scent I can always count on which is coconut!

This aluminum-free, clean formula integrates fermented enzymes, baking soda and arrowroot powder to fight odors and help keep you drier. For all skin types. Smells like fresh coconut with a hint of vanilla.

Ease of application

Packaging and ease of application are downfalls for a lot of natural deodorants. Some deodorant creams come in tubs so you have to scoop out the product and rub it on with your hands. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound appealing to me! Others are hard to apply because of the texture of the product itself. Some are very wet or sticky and that’s not comfortable.

This Pacifica deodorant is packaged in a round plastic tube that twists up like a traditional antiperspirant, so no problems there! The texture is also very pleasant. It has a solid waxy texture that isn’t messy or uncomfortable at all. With every other deodorant or antiperspirant I’ve owned, I made a bit of a mess around the edges of the top of the tube after application because some of the product would build up there due to the softness of the formulas. I think this one is just right; the deodorant isn’t so hard that it’s difficult to apply, but it’s also not so soft that it gets messy on me or the tube.

Between both the packaging and the formula of this product, it is very easy to apply!

Odor prevention

The primary goal of most natural deodorants is to kill the bacteria responsible for unpleasant odors, or at the very least, mask the stink. This deodorant definitely helps control my B.O. for a while, but reapplication is necessary most days. I apply this deodorant after I shower at night, in the morning before I get dressed, and I often reapply it sometime in the afternoon.

I’m not sure if it’s just something about my body’s chemistry, or if it is the type of sweat that I’m producing. Sorry if this is TMI, but I’ve always been sweatier than the average person and it’s worse when I’m stressed. This year has been extremely stressful, so as you can imagine, I’ve been sweating a lot…and stinking a lot. No one else seems to notice, but I sure do! “Stress sweat” is the worst smelling type of sweat our bodies produce, so it is possible that this is the reason I don’t find this deodorant to be as effective at odor prevention as I’d like.

Please don’t let this portion of the review scare you off. If you’re not an “extra stinky” person like me, this deodorant would probably do a good job at preventing odor for you.

Sweat absorption

Since I am one to sweat heavily, one thing that originally held me back from trying natural deodorant was the fact that I didn’t want to have wet armpits all the time. I knew that would be embarrassing, especially because I was working in an office environment at the time. Fortunately, a lot of natural deodorants are made with baking soda and/or other powders that absorb sweat.

This deodorant does a great job of keeping my armpits dry, as long as I don’t get hot or exercise! It’s not a huge deal for me since I work from home, but it is an inconvenience. Sometimes if it’s really bothering me I’ll wipe off my underarms, and then reapply the deodorant.

It’s not uncommon for people to feel sweaty even with absorbent natural deodorants. The absorbent property can only do so much since it’s only absorbing, not totally stopping the sweat (like an antiperspirant would).

Now for the fun part where I break down the good, the “neutral,” and the bad ingredients found in this Pacifica deodorant!

helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) root powder, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, parfum*, saccharomyces ferment, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, jojoba esters, oryza sativa (rice) bran extract, helianthus annuus (sunflower) extract, tocopherol (vitamin E).     *our scent blend with natural and/or essential oils

There are only 14 ingredients in this product and half of them are “good” by my standards. That might not sound very good, but it is. This will make more sense once I move on to the “neutral” ingredients. Here’s what you need to know about the good ingredients in this deodorant:

  • Sunflower seed oil
    • Improves damaged or irritated skin barrier
    • Loaded with fatty acids
  • Coconut oil
    • Moisturizes and seals in moisture
    • Provides a solid foundation for the formula
  • Shea butter
    • Emollient moisturizer
    • Skin-soothing
  • Saccharomyces ferment
    • Works as a natural deodorant on its own
    • Contains enzymes that break down odor-causing bacteria
  • Rosemary leaf extract
    • Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
    • Contains potent antioxidants
  • Sunflower extract
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Contains antioxidants
  • Vitamin E
    • Antioxidant
    • Strengthens skin barrier

I’m so glad to see these ingredients in this product because their properties are wonderful to have in any deodorant. For example, sunflower seed oil “improves damaged or irritated skin barrier;” the instructions state that you shouldn’t apply this product on broken skin or after shaving, but many people will apply after shaving and that means there’s likely to be some broken skin involved.

Now on to the “neutral” ingredients that are still very important to the effectiveness of this product! There are six neutral ingredients and most are thickening agents which make the product have a solid texture. A couple of these six ingredients are what makes the product absorb sweat. They are arrowroot powder and baking soda. Some people are sensitive to baking soda, but I haven’t experienced any problems with it.

As usual (for Pacifica products), there is “parfum” included in this product. This is the one “bad” ingredient in this product, and I’m disappointed to see that it’s number eight on the list. Normally added fragrance is closer to the bottom. I assume that in this case, it’s higher up because this is a deodorant and they want it to be fragranced enough to cover any bad odors that escape the enzymes and antibacterial rosemary. The label does note that the “parfum” (I really don’t like that term, can you tell?) is their scent blend with natural and/or essential oils. Unfortunately, they don’t reveal which specific oils are used and they could be irritating to people with sensitive skin.

Overall a great ingredient list for a natural deodorant!

This deodorant is $12.00. That might seem like a lot for deodorant, but those that have shopped around for natural deodorants before will know that this is a reasonable price. I do feel that Pacifica could’ve gone a little lower on price given the fact that their products are in the “drugstore” price range…but $12.00 is a heck of a lot better than $20.00 or more (yes some companies really are charging that much for deodorant!).

I’m always completely honest in my posts here on IntegriBeauty, so I have to admit that Pacifica Coconut Cream Clean Deodorant is not my ideal deodorant. However, I do think it’s a good product. It’s easy to apply, does a reasonably good job of absorbing sweat, has a nice ingredient list, and it’s sold at a fair price. I should also add that it smells great! Despite the name of the product, it doesn’t smell like coconut to me. It has a sweet fruity fragrance that I really enjoy. 🙂

If you’re considering switching natural deodorants or trying one for the first time, this might be a good choice for you. And what better time to try than now, as we move into cooler temperatures. The only people I wouldn’t recommend this to, would be people like me that “stress sweat” a lot, or anyone with sensitive skin due to the baking soda and added fragrance. Remember that there is also the watermelon rainbow version of this deodorant, which might be a good option for people that are sensitive to baking soda but not fragrance.

Natural Deodorant Products–Pros, Cons, and Everything in Between

The first modern(ish) deodorant was called “Mum” and it was trademarked in 1888. Mum was a paste applied to the underarms and was not an antiperspirant. In 1903, “Everdry,” the first antiperspirant deodorant, was invented. Everdry was a messy product too, while also being harsh on skin and clothes. In the 1950s and 1960s, roll-on and aerosol deodorants were invented. Through the years, companies have innovated to make every type of deodorant imaginable, from deodorants with unusual scents to crystal deodorant stones.

I started using deodorant when I was 11 or 12. Like most girls my age, I got Teen Spirit. I loved that stuff! It made me feel so grown up. Looking back, I cringe thinking about what kind of ingredients might’ve been in it.

Sweat is something I’ve always struggled with and it can be very embarrassing. I sweat excessively most days, whether it’s from exercise, heat, or stress (stress-sweat is real!). In college, I used clinical strength deodorant because I was under so much stress I needed a strong antiperspirant to make me feel more confident.

I started hearing about people using natural deodorants instead of antiperspirants and wondered how they could make it work. I thought natural deodorant was something that could never work for me. Well, a couple of years ago I decided to try one for the first time. It was a total dud for me even though that product works well for a lot of people. I thought that was it for me, that I’d always have to use antiperspirants…but then I kept hearing about other formulas and finally decided to try it again once I started working from home in March. I thought “what do I have to lose since we’re all quarantined anyway?”

I’ve learned a lot since then and I’d like to share some of that information with you. First of all, however, I want to explain why I want to discuss deodorant on my cruelty-free beauty blog. There are very few antiperspirants out there that are cruelty-free. I had been using Tom’s of Maine antiperspirant deodorant. That company is cruelty-free, but I recently learned that it is owned by Colgate-Palmolive which is not cruelty-free and therefore I will no longer purchase or promote Tom’s of Maine products. The good news is that there are plenty of cruelty-free options out there for natural deodorants!

What’s the difference between a traditional antiperspirant and a natural deodorant?

Traditional antiperspirants prevent odor by physically stopping the sweat. They are aluminum-based and work by blocking sweat ducts to reduce the amount of sweat that can be secreted. Antiperspirants with a higher concentration of aluminum are usually more effective at preventing sweat than ones with a lower concentration.

Natural deodorants prevent odor by killing odor-causing bacteria or might just mask the odor. Some can also absorb sweat to reduce wetness, depending on which ingredients are used. Natural deodorants do not block or clog sweat ducts like traditional antiperspirants.

Which ingredients are most effective in natural deodorants?

Each individual’s body chemistry is different, so no single formula of natural deodorant will work for every person. However, most natural deodorants will include ingredients that work to neutralize stinky bacteria and absorb excess moisture. I’ll list some common ingredients below that make natural deodorant more effective.

  • Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is one of the most popular ingredients used in natural deodorants. It absorbs sweat and kills odor-causing bacteria. Unfortunately, it causes irritation for people with sensitive skin so many deodorant brands that use baking soda will offer an alternative formula that doesn’t include any baking soda.
    • Often used in combination with arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • Arrowroot powder and cornstarch are alternatives to baking soda. They absorb sweat and arrowroot powder has the added benefit of drawing out toxins and impurities. Both ingredients are safe for sensitive skin.
  • Mandelic acid, coconut oil, tea tree oil, and rosemary oil disinfect and prevent growth of bacteria which cause underarm odor.
    • Coconut oil has the added benefit of forming a solid foundation for the formula
  • Other essential oils like lavender, bergamot, and eucalyptus provide fragrance to mask odor if there is any.

Pros of natural deodorants

As you probably already know, there are several pros and cons associated with natural deodorant. We’ll start with the good stuff!

  • Most of the ingredients used in natural deodorants are simple, well-known, and good for your skin. There is a lot of uncertainty about the safety of aluminum used in antiperspirants.
    • Aloe leaf juice is a good ingredient to look for in natural deodorant; it soothes and is also an antibacterial
  • Your underarms can “breathe” when you wear natural deodorant because it doesn’t clog sweat ducts. This is a good thing because when those ducts are blocked, the sweat will build up under your skin along with bad bacteria.
  • No yellow stains on clothes! If you sweat while wearing an antiperspirant, the aluminum mixes with it to stain clothes yellow. No aluminum means no ugly stains.
  • Natural deodorant can be made at home if you prefer freshly made body care products.
  • Many cruelty-free options 🙂

Cons of natural deodorants

Just like with many things in life, we have to take the bad with the good when it comes to natural deodorant. There are a lot of great things about natural deodorant but it’s good to be aware of the cons too before you decide to make the switch.

  • You will sweat when using natural deodorant. There’s no way around it. On the bright side, there are ingredients used in many natural deodorants that absorb excess moisture so you might not feel sweaty depending on how much sweat you produce.
  • Many people that previously used antiperspirants go through a “detox” period the first couple of weeks of using a natural deodorant. During this time, the body purges the buildup from sweat ducts and you may experience excessive sweating and stinkier sweat than what you’re used to. Don’t worry though, this is temporary.
  • Some ingredients commonly used in natural deodorants can be irritating to the skin, especially after shaving. Baking soda is the most common culprit, but essential oils can also be irritating to sensitive skin.
    • There are options available for those with sensitive skin, it’s just a matter of finding what works best.
  • May need to be reapplied throughout the day if you sweat a lot.

Should you make the switch to natural deodorant?

Switching from traditional antiperspirant to natural deodorant is a very personal choice. Natural deodorant might not work for every person. If you’ve considered it before, I would encourage you to try it because you might be surprised to find that you really like it!

Natural deodorant has come a long way in recent years. There are seemingly endless options available to us today so chances are good that there is one out there that will work well for you. You can now find natural deodorants for people that sweat heavily, and there are also very good-smelling deodorants for those that value a good fragrance (masculine, feminine, or gender-neutral). People with sensitive skin can easily find natural deodorants that are formulated without baking soda or essential oils. There are even “sweat-activated” deodorants that you can’t smell until you start to sweat.

Natural deodorant might seem unattainable to some because it can be quite expensive, but there are so many companies making natural deodorants these days there are options for nearly any budget.

Personally, I decided to switch to natural deodorant for a couple of reasons. When I used antiperspirant there were a lot of days that I could still feel it on my skin at the end of the day and had a hard time scrubbing it off. I didn’t like my armpits being clogged with chemicals. I also didn’t like the idea of my body absorbing aluminum every day. Even though studies have not proven any links between antiperspirants and health problems, I recognize that there is still a risk that they could be harmful. I would rather not take that unnecessary risk.

If you’ve decided to switch to natural deodorant and are feeling overwhelmed by all the options out there, you’re not alone. I still feel that way sometimes! I’ve tried a few natural deodorants now and have learned from my experiences, but have yet to find my perfect natural deodorant. A lot of people try several before finding the perfect fit.

My best advice is to think about what you need from your deodorant (i.e. sweat absorption, soothing formula, etc.) and use that information to determine which ingredients likely will or will not work for you. Then when you’re shopping for natural deodorant make sure you pay close attention to the ingredient list to make sure you get one that is likely to fit your needs. If you’re unsure about the safety of a particular ingredient or product, you can look it up in the EWG Skin Deep database which will show the level of risk for cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and allergies/immunotoxicity.

My other piece of advice is to be smart about when you make the switch to natural deodorant. If you live in a region that has cool winters and warm summers, it’s easiest to switch to natural deodorant when you’re moving into a cooler time of year. That makes the transition easier since most people don’t sweat as much during cooler months. For those in the northern hemisphere, fall is upon us, which means that now is a great time to transition to using natural deodorant.

Do you plan to trade your antiperspirant for a natural deodorant, or have you already made the switch? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject!
