e.l.f. Happy Hydration Cream–Nourish Skin with Hemp Seed Oil

In my last post, I reviewed the e.l.f. 50 mg CBD Eye Cream from the new CBD Collection. E.l.f. also released the Cannabis Sativa Collection this year, which features hemp seed oil. It is a common misconception that CBD and hemp seed oil are the same thing because they both come from the hemp plant (range of Cannabis Sativa plants that contain 0.3% or less of THC). CBD is a compound that can be extracted from any part of the plant except the seeds, while hemp seed oil is extracted only from the seeds.

Like CBD, hemp seed oil has become a very popular ingredient in skincare products. When I ordered the CBD eye cream, I knew I wanted to try something from the Cannabis Sativa Collection as well. I settled on the Happy Hydration Cream (isn’t that the cutest name?) because I wanted to try a slightly more hydrating day cream now that the weather has turned cooler here in the Midwest. Hemp seed oil is a very nourishing and hydrating ingredient, making it perfect for fall and winter. This moisturizer would also work well as a night cream for normal to oily skin types, but I have a different product that I prefer to use at night.

You might notice in my product photos that the jar looks very small. That’s because I bought the mini “on the go” size that is 0.52 oz. instead of the standard size 1.7 oz. Since I like to try a lot of different products, especially now that I’m writing product reviews, I thought it made more sense to get the smaller size. I appreciate that e.l.f. offers mini versions of some of their products for people like me, or anyone looking for smaller products for travel.

Ease of application

This moisturizer is packaged in a semi-transparent jar. This type of packaging makes it very easy to get the amount of product you need. I prefer a pump or squeeze tube for moisturizers to avoid dipping my fingers into the product, but I’m not sure if that would work for this product since the texture is slightly thick. I took two points from this category because the packaging doesn’t protect the product from light and air, and I’d prefer a more sanitary delivery system.

The product itself is very easy to apply to the skin. It has a very smooth creamy texture that blends into the skin like a dream. It never feels greasy and soaks in quickly.

Hydration

Happy Hydration Cream is a very hydrating product. I think it provides the perfect amount of hydration, especially for daytime. I really enjoy the hydration this product provides because my skin always feels like it’s getting the ideal amount of moisture without feeling heavy or greasy. I think the hydration and texture of this product are what make it work so well for any skin type. I would describe the texture as a gel-cream hybrid. It feels great going on the skin!

Team player

I apply this moisturizer every morning after toner, serum(s), and eye cream. It always blends into the skin without any fuss and very little effort. There is no pilling when this cream is applied over those skincare steps, or when makeup is applied on top. Happy Hydration Cream provides a nice smooth hydrated base for makeup. It is an all-around great team player.

Ingredients

There are a whopping 32 ingredients in this moisturizer. Don’t let that scare you, though!

Water (Aqua), Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Stearyl Heptanoate, Isohexadecane, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Isopropyl Isostearate, Cetearyl Olivate, Trehalose, Stearic Acid, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Silica, Sodium Hyaluronate, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Panthenol (Vb5), Sorbitan Olivate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polyethylene, Disodium EDTA, Polyacrylate-13, Polyisobutene, Polysorbate 20, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Carbomer, BHT

I’m a little bit disappointed that there are only ten ingredients in this product that provide direct benefit to the skin. That’s actually quite a few, but it doesn’t seem that way at first glance because of how many ingredients there are. I’ll describe each of the ten “good” ingredients below:

  • Hemp seed oil
    • Contains omega fatty acids, phospholipids, plant sterols, amino acids, and vitamin E
    • Moisturizing
    • Strengthens skin barrier
    • Regulates oil production
  • Glycerin
    • Natural moisturizer
  • Niacinamide
    • Improves appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, and fine lines
    • Regulates oil production
  • Cetearyl Olivate
    • Paired with sorbitan olivate, generates liquid crystal structures that are similar to the outer layer of the skin
    • Moisturizing
    • Repairs skin barrier
  • Trehalose
    • Plant sugar that hydrates skin
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
    • Humectant (sodium form of hyaluronic acid)
  • Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1
    • “Famous” peptide (part of Matrixyl 3000)
    • Stimulates collagen production
  • Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7
    • Reduces inflammation
    • Slows degradation of collagen
  • Panthenol (provitamin B5)
    • Moisturizer
    • Humectant
  • Sorbitan Olivate
    • Paired with cetearyl olivate, generates liquid crystal structures that are similar to the outer layer of the skin

I am very happy to see that hemp seed oil is the #2 ingredient on the list! There is a very high concentration of this ingredient, and it’s a great one to provide much nourishment to the skin. Niacinamide is also in the top ten and that’s one of my very favorite ingredients to use in my skincare regimen. It’s wonderful for balancing combination and oily skin.

Five of these beneficial ingredients are in the top ten, which is great to see! It’s always best for skin-loving ingredients to be at the top of the list since those are the ones that have the highest concentrations. Unfortunately, the other five beneficial ingredients are further down the list, in the middle. That doesn’t mean they’re not going to benefit the skin, but you’re more likely to see benefits from ingredients with higher concentrations.

As for the other 22 ingredients in this moisturizer, I consider them to be neutral. None of them are harmful, but they also don’t provide any direct benefit to the skin. These ingredients are things like emollients, texture enhancers, emulsifiers, and preservatives.

I don’t do “bonus points” when rating products, but if I did, I would give this one a bonus point for not having any natural or artificial fragrance! Fragrance is unnecessary and irritating for many people, so it’s nice to see skincare products formulated without it.

Price

I think the price of this moisturizer is very fair at $12.00. That price is in line with a few similar products from other e.l.f. skincare collections. You can find less expensive face creams at the drugstore, but not many, and they likely aren’t as good as this one. Good ingredients are important to me and since hemp seed oil is the second highest ingredient in this formula, I think this moisturizer is definitely worth the price.

As for the mini size, I think it is also very fairly priced at only $4.00. Some brands rip you off with their mini sizes, if you pay attention to the price per ounce, but that isn’t the case here. With the mini size of this product, you get just under a third of the amount that you get with the standard size, and it’s exactly one third of the price.

Other products in the e.l.f. Cannabis Sativa Collection

E.l.f. smartly released three other products in the Cannabis Sativa Collection, in addition to the full-size and mini-size Happy Hydration Cream:

  • All the Feels Facial Oil $12.00
  • Calm Balm $5.00
  • Puff Puff Primer $8.00

I’m interested in the Puff Puff Primer, so you may see a product review about that sometime in the future!

If you’re interested in all four products from the Cannabis Sativa Collection, but don’t want to commit to buying the full-size versions, you can try each of them in the Mini Skin Hit Kit for only $15.00. There is also a full-size Skin Hit Kit, but it’s $37.00 and doesn’t save you any money since it’s the same price as if you were to buy all four products separately. Either of the kits would make a great gift!

Happy Hydration cream is not the perfect face cream. There is room for improvement in packaging and formulation (it would be nice to see some of the skin-loving ingredients moved up the list), but overall it is a really good quality product! I have been enjoying it very much.

E.l.f. claims that this product is good for all skin types, and I agree with that claim. It’s unusual to find skincare that works for everyone, but I think this is one of those few gems. It has the hydration that we all need, and the gel-cream texture won’t make combination and oily skin types look greasy like some moisturizers.

Have you tried anything from the e.l.f. Cannabis Sativa Collection, or any of their other skincare collections? Since this is one of only two e.l.f. skincare products I’ve tried, I’m very curious about their other products and collections. Please share any comments below!
